  1. Vandy's show feels less like music and more like just a series of articulations.
  2. I don't understand how Vista Ridge are high school kids. Such beautiful, beautiful sounds. Hard to get me to cry, but if I were a crying man, I would have cried at this.
  3. I especially love that sentiment. "Nobody is safe." Even Vandegrift was knocked down a few pegs in the prelims.
  4. i wouldn't take that list seriously, dude has cedar park twice
  5. Even if it's superior, which it is, it would still be a nice change of pace to have Grand Nats in San Antonio once every few years. Would be a great display of the depth Texas has. Exactly 4 non-Texas bands would sniff the top 14.
  6. TWHS always seems to be on the outside looking in ... in that sub-elite tier, as great as they are. In your opinion (this is a question for everyone), what do they need to do to move into regular contention for first place? And since I'm a Bridgeland parent, what the heck, I'll ask the same question for Bridgeland - what does it need to do to move into TWHS' current position, consistently contending for 4-6?
  7. I love Flomo's show. It isn't particularly exciting or challenging, but it's a great example of a medium-ish difficulty show pulled off to absolute perfection. And there's a bit of fun with the color explosions toward the end. I can't tell if this show is optimized for UIL or BOA. Visual is off the charts.
  8. Ever heard of "icing the kicker" in football? That's essentially what happened to CyFair and CyWoods. Not an advantage. Not necessarily a disadvantage, either. Just an interruption. They both did just fine and we're all moving on.
  9. Great attitude, and thank you. Looking forward to going head-to-head with you guys one last time next week! I would love to see all 3 CFISD schools in finals.
  10. What a wild ride. A school being dq’d, a different school missing state as a result, horrendous weather, multiple stopped performances, a results announcement with virtually nobody left in the stands, changing the champion, angry parents and angry students. Long live area I!
  11. I"m not quibbling over whether Bridgeland should have beat Woods. I'm asking how you would rewrite the rule. It sounds like you would toss the rule entirely. So you'd be OK with a 1, 1, 1, 1, 25 not advancing to state?
  12. I’m very curious to hear how everyone opposed to this exception would rewrite the rule. If you have three 1’s and a 2 and a 3, it seems wrong to throw those out. Two 4’s, as with Bridgeland? Maybe. One 9, as with Clements, definitely. Maybe make the requirement four 1’s and one bad judge to trigger the rule? The focus would need to be on how many wayward judges you need to trigger the rule, and how far off they need to be from the mainstream judges.
  13. isn't it the same judge who put jordan 17 in music? i thought that was nuts as well.
  14. Bad judge rule. Bridgeland wins Area I.
  15. Yeah I followed what you were saying, I was confused about Tubalord's post
  16. I don't understand this. The raw score sheets specifically include content as part of the score. Maybe it's not a huge part of the score, but it's right there on the page, as part of each and every caption. There is a score and there is an ordinal ranking next to it that gets factored into the final ranking for that caption, which gets factored into the overall ranking as a whole. So how can you say they don't matter as much as the rankings for each band, since they are what determines the rankings for each band?
  17. And they said sharing of the page wouldn't work!
  18. I think the bad judge rule might apply. For example for Bridgeland vs. Cy Woods, if the same scores given in prelims had been given in finals, then the fact that Bridgeland got two 1's in music and a 1 in visual means the lower scores would have been tossed and would have beat Cy Woods. But I don't know how that applies to lower scores, and I don't know if the rule still applies today. All I know about it is rumors from years past.
  19. Where are you seeing the breakdown by brass/woodwinds? The published one only has music vs. visual. Do you have a link?
  20. that's what I'm talking about!!!!!!!!!!!! If I'm not rooting for Bridgeland I'm rooting for my alma mater! GO LOBOS
  21. This is the right answer. I can tell you that there was no talk among Bridgeland boosters about what to do if the event needed to be moved to Monday. We would probably not have had enough volunteers to run the event. Maybe there was something cooking behind the scenes I don't know about. But I think moving to the backup day is a last resort.
  22. Bridgeland was hosting this contest and I volunteered, so I can shed a little light. First things first, Bridgeland was just providing volunteers. Not at all in charge of high level decisions about the contest. That is the state UIL and the venue is operated by CFISD employees who were voluntold to participate. i think that uil and CFISD did the best they could under the circumstances. They can’t control the rain and they cannot afford domed stadiums for all the area contests. That is a financial and logistical impossibility. they provided indoor shelter to the bands that were stranded in the rain, inside Berry center. They covered instruments and equipment the best they could. Tarps were used for equipment left in the parking lot and for front ensembles on the field for Cy woods. Who by the way eventually won the contest with all equipment seemingly working as it should. All volunteers, uil, and CFISD employees worked together to make the best of a bad situation. yes, the students didn’t get to put their best foot forward. But there were a lot of positives. For one, the kids learned to deal with some adversity. As a parent I don’t necessarily want my kids cruising through their teen years with no challenges where they have to rise to meet the moment. That is what champions do. That is what everyday heroes do. That is what adults have to do. Strange scoring/judging debates aside, that is what cy woods did, and congrats to them for doing so. As a volunteer who directed the students off the field after performing, I didn’t encounter ONE sourpuss kid. They were all clearly tired but focused, and consistently polite and respectful. “Yes sir no sir thank you sir good luck to Bridgeland sir.” I saw social media videos on Bridgeland’s page with all the Bridgeland kids high fiving the Katy kids as they headed out to perform. i think ALL of the bands had a hard night and they all rose to the occasion, if not in victory or in advancing to state, then to being a total class act in difficult circumstances. Band contests aside, this music community is raising some great adults, leaders, and human beings of tomorrow.
