  1. Lots of the Cy-Fair School district schools don't have a jazz band either. It really sucks
  2. My section and I tend to speak with very bad Italian accents while we wave our hands around in a crazy manner. None of us are italian.
  3. second semester is also encroaching College auditions are coming fast,
  4. Looking for some help figuring out some stuff. I'm planning on majoring in Music Education and have to audition on tuba on febuary 10th. I'm working on 2 of the pieces the department suggests. Is this enough or should I prepare more? Will they ask for the entire piece or excerpts? Or what? I'm really nervous about going into this audition and not having what they want ready. I've got the auditions for University of Houston the month after these! STRESSS! so much practice until then! ughhh
  5. I made 20th out of 27 tubas in my region. Meh, My first etude was terrible. I had never really played it. I did OK on the other two. This was the first year I had ever done region. Most boring 3 and a half hours of my life
  6. I had my very first fall with my sousaphone just a few weeks ago. I guess it was just my time. I was the last in the section to fall. One of the last practices of my senior year and I fall. I moving at 5 to 5 steps at around 180bpm, backwards. I had to get in line with a tenor sax player, and I was almost to my set when I stepped on his foot. I felt all my balance go and time slow down. I started falling back and my mind was racing a million miles a minute. All I could think of was saving the horn. On my way to the ground, I somehow managed to get the sousaphone off my shoulder and in front of me. When I hit the ground, I landed on my butt and my upper body fell back, smacking my skull against the concrete but my horn was safe and sound sitting on my chest and lap.
  7. The tubas have their own room at my school. Its about 12x12 and gets pretty messy and stinky during marching season. The great thing is, there's an AC vent in there that is constantly blowing cold air. We normally come in after practice and huddle beneath the vent to cool down. We have some death mold growing in the ceiling tiles too. A couple of years ago, our then section leader threw a bannana into the roof. Some nice mold is growing. We have a TV in there too, and we used to have a SNES hooked up before the directors caught us. We also had 9 pizza box tops along the walls as trophies. We used to order pizza at the beginning of advisory and it would get there by lunch. That got shut down pretty quick.... Overall bandhall just has slots, but we're putting locks on them cause we had 12 instruments stolen last year.
  8. Oh that reminds me... We played YMCA as a stand tune this year and when we were learning it in class the director said "You can't mess this song up. It is like the national anthem for gays"
  9. "I went to Rice."
  10. I've got an english paper i need to finish, several economics worksheets, and i need to start preparing my audition pieces for UNT....Stupid private lesson teacher won't call me back
  11. A couple of guys at my school went out driving one night and there was a gun in the car, and one guy shot another one when they were playing around. He never had any charges raised against him either... One of our french horn player's dad died a couple weeks ago. He had been fighting cancer for a long time. The horn player still didn't miss a rehearsel. He's really brave
  12. I'm not in guard but felt inclined to respond. Churchill has an AMAZING guard. Double backhands...jeezus.
  13. I'm the section leader at Cypress Creek in Houston. We've got 8 players total. 6 competition spots. 1 girl, and she's going to be section leader when I'm gone. She's awesome and totally kicks my section into shape. We're probably the laziest in the band, but its only cause we know when to try hard and when we can slack off. It sucks standing forever with that darn sousaphone on! So if we can get out of it, why not? I saw the tuba octet at State on tuesday.(loooong trip) It was really awesome. I told my tubas about it and they want to play it. Anyone from Richland want to hook me up with the sheet music?
  14. At Cy-Creek, in the top band we are doing A Movement for Rosa, Southern Harmony, and some march I'm not sure of. For Christmas, we're preparing Russian Christmas Music by Alfred Reed(the same guy that wrote Armenian Dances)
  15. I ordered a Kelly mouthpiece for my senior year. I didn't want my only mouthpiece to get all dinged up before concert season, so I got a nice blue Kellyberg mouthpiece. My director hates it and won't let me use it, even though there isn't a tone difference, at least to my ears.
