I know this board tends to be more interested in marching season, but I figured I'd share something different. My old band, Southwest High School from Fort Worth, is performing at Midwest this year, and they performed a pre-Midwest concert at UNT this past weekend. I wanted to share a recording of one of the pieces they're performing with clarinetist Jon Manasse, "Rondo" from Concerto No. 1, Op. 73:

Just wanted to log in to my account for the first time in two years to say congrats to Southwest for making state finals for the first time in school history. Really proud to see my old high school achieving greater things.

Interestingly, if you were to remove the non-finalists and re-rank the bands as if there were only ten, Wakeland would actually be out and Liberty would be in.

Congrats to all the bands who competed. I can only imagine how rough it must be to miss out with finals being cancelled. With that said, I'm really glad to see my old band back in state after missing it in 2011. Wish I could have been at the competition today. I can't believe how close the top 6 were.

The success of Centennial gives me hope for what Southwest can achieve in two years. You guys made state in '07, missed in '09, and are on track to do amazing thing this year. We made it in '09 and missed it this year so hopefully Southwest will be right back in the thick of things in two more years.

I'll be pulling for the Area B bands and Dripping Springs. I'd like to see Friendswood do well, too. I can't wait to see how Centennial places. They've done amazing this year.

Really wish I could be there. This contest would be held on the one weekend I'm not able to make it home. Oh well. I'm looking forward to getting those prelims results.

I really hope they allow Poteet to compete. I'd hate to see any band kept out of the state competition because of something as small as what sounds like a paperwork issue. Kudos to the director for handling it the way he did.

Just submitted mine as well. Did it more to enjoy viewing other people's predictions, though, and I only did the top six. I really don't know much about the bands this year. The only shows I've seen are Centennial's, which looks amazing, and Southwest's. I just kind of went on past success and a little of what I've heard on TheYellowBoard.

This is entirely possible. Three of the four bands that made it two years ago from Area B made finals and Southwest missed it by two. I'll almost be surprised if there aren't three Area B bands in finals with one earning a medal.

Aledo actually got seventh. Birdville was the alternate and The Colony came in sixth. Anyway, Southwest's show is The Rise of the Phoenix. I don't remember what the entire musical program consists of but I know they're playing some of Mackey's Kingfishers Catch Fire and Stravinsky's Firebird. Thanks. I've always pulled for Centennial since 2007 when we didn't make it and you guys did. Also, Aledo actually didn't make it out of Area B last time around. It was Newman Smith, Wakeland, Legacy, and Southwest. I'm interested to see if they pull it off this year. I haven't seen their show or heard much about them. Area B will be crazy as usual, though. At least they're taking six this time.

Southwest High School has placed third, fifth, and second at the past three 4A honor band competitions. In 2007, we received a II at UIL region marching and in 2009, we placed 12th at the state marching contest. Just because a band excels in honor band competition doesn't mean they'll excel in marching. That said, Friendswood is obviously dominant in both but the fact that they've won prior honor bands doesn't mean they'll automatically win the music categories at state marching. Don't forget that Dripping Springs is also a very good band when it comes to honor band competitions. The fact of the matter is that Dripping Springs played and marched exceptionally well in 2009 and Friendswood, while the did both very well, didn't march good enough to win the competition. All it would have taken was one first place vote in marching and they would have had it. It was close and I'm sure it was very disappointing for the Friendswood band but they certainly weren't screwed out of anything. Dripping Springs was a very deserving band.

I know when I was at Southwest, we always looked forward to going up against Aledo. I never knew if that rivalry was at all mutual or if it was more of a one sided thing.

I'm pretty sure Southwest was supposed to go to DMI but they have their homecoming dance that night. DMI is listed on their calendar but I imagine that was before they knew about the conflict with homecoming and they just haven't changed it.

I was there tonight. Three of my friends and I got there at 7:30 to watch some of the rehearsal as well. It was amazing. I'm so glad I got to make it out there.
