UIL Texas State Championships

Considering they jumped from 8th to 5th place in Area Finals, I can definitely see them bringing the heat. I'm in love with their show this year. -

I definitely wish you guys the best of luck. I have no doubt Forney will be going after the title as hard as possible knowing that this is like a "2nd Chance" sort of situation for them. Definitely excited to see you guys there. =] -

Wow! Well Congrats to the Forney Band! Although it is sad to see those kids at Poteet punished for an innocent mistake. I have very mixed feelings about the decision. -

Where did you see this?? -
Being an Area B advocate, I think I'll just say that what I always tell people I work with is that the bands from Area B aren't necessarily the strongest overall in the state, it's just the most consistent area within itself. There's never really a BIG stand out band from Area B on the state level (in 4A at least), BUT the competition within the Area to get to the State level is just brutal. For example: Creekview and The Colony both beat Wakeland at the Carrollton TOC 3 weeks ago, yet Wakeland placed 2nd in Area, where Creekview and the The Colony didn't even make it into finals. Also, if you look at the spread of Area B scores, Wakeland (2nd), Birdville (3rd) and Newman Smith (4th) were within 6 points of each other. In fact, Birdville AND Newman Smith beat Wakeland in music, but lost in the marching scores. And the difference between the last band to make state (Aledo) and the first alternate (McKinney) was literally ONE point (Again, McKinney placed higher than Aledo in music, but Aledo's marching squeaked out the narrow 6th place finish). But I do have to say, the fact that Centennial placed 1st by NINE points I think should cause some Area D bands to worry. =]

It probably has something to do with just the video, but there were weaker moments that I definitely didnt hear out of DS. I do really like how Dawson, Waxahachie, Dripping Springs and Centennial have great woodwind features. I think those parts are what will basically decide the music rankings. Brass is all about the same level. -

And another quick comment: The top 3... Well I'll even argue top 5 at this contest is going to be close. I'm not sure I would include Waxahachie in your shoot out for top 3 though. I'd be more inclined to put Lake Travis, Centennial or Dawson there (I FINALLY saw Area Finals performance videos for almost all the top ranked bands). In my opinion, music is way too close to call a winner. Cedar Parks is most entertaining, whereas Dripping Springs is the most well blended and balanced, and I would put Centennial as a close 2nd in blend and balance to DS over CP. I think Waxahachie may fall to 4th or 5th in music behind Dawson, CP, Centennial and DS. There are parts of Waxahachie's show that are just BRILLIANT in music, but there are also some weaker sections. I'm sure those will be cleaned in time for state though! It's all going to be about the visuals in the end I think. Again, I'd give the most clean show to Dripping Springs overall. CP is the most visually exciting, and I would argue probably the hardest drill of all the bands, but it needs some cleaning (which again, I'm sure will be better by state). Waxahachie, Centennial and Dawson are about on par with each other with a few issues in cover downs, rotating blocks and spacing. Based on that I'd say your rankings will probably be: 1. Dripping Springs 2. Cedar Park/Lake Travis 3. Centennial/Dawson/Lake Travis 4. Centennial/Dawson 5. Waxahachie/Dawson Regardless, it's going to be CLOSE. -

You're right. Blah. that's what I get for trying to post things at 5 AM. lol. I'm really pulling for a Dripping Springs repeat. I'll get to see them this weekend at the CMF so I'm extremely excited. =] -

First comment to your "on the bubbles": Newman Smith was only 3 points away from beating Wakeland at Area, and Sherman BROUGHT IT at Area Finals. I'm not sure if they'll be able to clean the drill enough in time for Tuesday to advance to finals, but I can guarantee you they will be putting up a HUGE fight. Next comment: I've been following the Friendswood/Dawson competition all season, and I honestly would place Dawson in a medal spot over Friendswood this season.... -

I'd be a little more aware of Dawson and Dripping Springs if I were you. =] Just throwing that out there. -

Yeah, if you noticed, I only picked 9 cus I'm soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Unsure of the other bands that I would put into the top 10. If it's based on music as I think it will be, I could see it easily being Lake Travis. -

Here's a more complete list of Finals results (scores are still first 3 music, last 2 marching). 1. Centennial: 1, 1, 1, 3, 1=7 2. Wakeland: 3, 3, 9, 1, 2=18 3. Birdville: 7, 2, 3, 4, 5= 21 4. Newman Smith: 8, 4, 2, 2, 7= 23 5. Sherman: 4, 5, 5, 9, 3= 26 6. Aledo: 10, 6, 4, 7, 4= 31 7. Mckinney: 2, 9, 6, 6, 9= 32 8. Frisco: 9, 10, 7, 5, 6= 37 9. Liberty: 6, 7, 10, 8, 8= 39 10. Southwest: 5, 8, 8, 10, 10= 41 Most shocking results here to me are the ONE point difference between being first alternate Mckinney and state bound Aledo... And also the fact that Wakeland, Birdville and Newman Smith are within 6 points of each other makes me firmly believe that we could see some flip flopping of those results at state. -

I have a question: They didn't announce any sort of alternates for Area B, when they usually do.... Since the area is sending 6 bands already, does that mean there will be no replacement? They just cut to 5 if they lose a band for whatever reason? -

All the frisco isd schools are doing fantastic! And the two newest ones (lone star and heritage) are starting with a good base. I'm most upset not to see southwest advance. They're definitely one of my favorite programs in the area. -

You're correct. Proof I can't talk, text and walk at the same time. =] And I do think early performance times Hurt creekview and the colony. I've kept up with them this season and my jaw dropped when I heard they didn't make it
