I guess i'll make the first Jazz Festival thread of the new year. "The 35th Annual UT Arlington Jazz Festival will be held on Friday, February 27, 2009. We are excited to offer the festival this year on the UT Arlington Campus, in the Hereford University Center." There will be a first and second place trophy awarded to the 1st place and 2nd place band, and a 3rd place if there are more than 5 bands. There will also be an outstanding musician award per class. So far the only bands that I know that are going, other than us, is Lake Highlands and Wakeland. And an exhibition by last years winner, West Mesquite. If your in the DFW Area, you should definitely check it out. Plug I know, but its always nice to play to an audience

marching band bus rides
rpd replied to clarinethero's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
We used to always sing Bohemian Rhapsody. On the way from BOA Arlington we watched Iron Man, Transformers, and some other movie I cant remember. Typically we just watch movies when we get charters. Also, every male in the band packs enough food to last a week. -

TMEA All-Area

I kind of know how you feel. I was very close to making region, which isn't big, but I thought would have been a huge success considering I've been playing the sax for 4 months at the time. My stubborn attitude just wanted a challenge. I think I could have made area with a quarter of the time I put in if I had stayed on the Bass Clarinet. After region my band director, who judged all the low clarinets, told me I should have stayed on Bass Clarinet, and that I would have been 1st chair barring any disasters. Oh well, you win some and you lose some. I became a much better Sax player through the etudes, so I have no regrets. But hey, there's still TSSEC lol. I only have about a half a page to go to memorize. Three people represented Marshall this year, however none made state. Not bad considering we've had one person make Area the previous three years. -
OU is more consistent than UT when it comes to regular season games. Oklahoma is ALWAYS in a BCS bowl. Texas was in the Alamo bowl recently. UT tends to find a quarterback then ride them until they end up in the NFL, then oops, we gotta find a new one. Works great when there a junior or senior, but they typically lack when it comes to their freshman and sophomore year. They did it with Simms, somewhat with Young, and of course with McCoy. I know the QB isn't everything, but they do mean the most. UT may have the advantage next year with McCoy being a senior, and Bradford possibly being in the NFL. As for this year it was truly a toss up on who was better. Each side had its case. UT beat OU head to head, yet OU annihilated a team that beat UT. And no, I'm not a fan of either UT or OU.

Band Instrumentation
rpd replied to chkelley11's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Oh you have no idea. Not to mention that the three piccolos are in the top ensemble. When we worked on marching music during class there would be three piccolos to only 45 other people. THAT was insanity. Of course there will be only one for concert music. -
Went on right before us at BOA San Antonio Prelims.

Has an odd colored skin complexion. (Judging by your avatar of course)

Requiem for a Dream. The only movie that can make me cry. Last movie saw in a theater?

I was, but then turned into depression. I'm a big Tech fan. Plus I don't ever not root for a Texas team. Fiesta Bowl? Texas or Ohio State?

Next Step for Band?

I hope not. That sounded bad. But props to him anyways. -
Anglo-Saxon. In other words, Irish. Did your new years resolution last more than a day?

Yep, and it looks like I finished third. Your team got extremely hot the week we faced in the first round. Mine got hot the wrong week =p.

LD Bell March and Play?
rpd replied to Realist's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Very true, and I'm not putting down Amanda Drinkwater's success, but Marcus was a fairly successful band before her. I should have put the best director wont be able to take an average band, and make them state champions. With ~250 5A schools in Texas, I would consider bands that finish near the bottom of Area as average. Marcus was 2nd in Area B in 2004, which I believe was the year before Amanda Drinkwater took over. -
LD Bell March and Play?
rpd replied to Realist's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
While I do agree a good program comes down to good instruction, I will disagree, respectfully, with the point of any average kid being able to come in and being able to march a show of LD Bell's standards. The best band director in the world will not be able to make State Champions out of a normal band in their first year (at least in Texas). And probably not in their first 4 years either, when all of his or her students have been under the same director. I think you must change the culture of the band, making the students you have work harder. By doing this, your upperclassmen will help the underclassmen on their own time. No matter how good of a director the band may have, its impossible to spend sufficient time with everyone to make them good musicians. That's where the culture change comes in. If the freshmen see's what the upperclassmen are capable of, they will work harder to accomplish what they are doing. If the underclassmen knows they have high standards to live to, they will match it, and eventually succeed it. Each graduating class, ideally, should be better than the last. On to the point of difficulty. I come from a band that is currently doing many things that may be out of our reach. I really hope this doesn't come of as conceited, or egotistical, but in my opinion our drill and music is much harder than anyone in our region, and one of the top in our area (keep in mind I come from Area G). Once we got moving (I didn't move for the first 20 measures) there wasn't a stand still for anything more than 16 beats. For the first time since I've been in marching, I was required to do 16th note runs while moving, and our closer had a lot syncopation. As exciting as our show may have been, it was dirty. Our band just wasn't up to the standard the show required. I really do believe that if we had a show a little bit easier, our competition results would have been much better. But in a way, my band is humbled by this. Every time we performed our show, we got a reception that made us feel great. And we believe that we got these receptions because our show was difficult, it was different than what people have seen from my district. Which definitely took away from the frustration factor.
