  1. "Don't fly past Flower Mound with your extremely generic statements. Their honor band was 7th in the state a few months ago. They sound terrific on the field." Just because a group can sit and play well together doesn't mean that translates the same way on the marching field. Sitting and playing and marching and playing are different ends of the spectrum. Not to mention music is not the only criteria they judge in UIL. There are many other factors that come into play.

  3. Welcome to the forums Mr. Negative!! ....this is in reference to the post right above me....apparently you can't quote on a Fast Reply....good to know!!
  4. You helped me prove my point. That's what practice is for... So that when you are at a football game or a competition, the practice kicks in and you automatically do what's been practiced. There's no need for the tempo to be perfect or right on, "We're all human." It's okay if the tempo a little slower or a little faster, give or take a few beats per minute.
  5. How is it any different? A metronome is a metronome, and they shouldn't be used in any type of live performance. Bands have enough rehearsals to at least get a relative feel for the tempos of each movements without needing the assistance of an annoying machine....and I really think that it is offensive, to me and probably most of the high school students, to refer to any band as "high-end." Just an opinion....
  6. Broken Arrow, 2006 BOA Grand National Champions, used a metronome at the St. Louis Super Regional last weekend. They used one before each piece in their show to get the tempo set for the drum majors, which I think it ridiculous. I would think that it would more acceptable at a football game over a competition of any type. Even if they are just using it to set the tempos I still think that it is unacceptable. Metronomes should be used for rehearsal purposes only!!

  8. I have to say that Westfield did an outstanding job tonight. They seem to have pulled a lot together in a weeks time. Although this is not the Westfield we all know, I think that it will do very well at UIL....but I have to say that I miss the old Westfield a lot. With the synths. I'm guessing this new director is trying to pull them more towards the UIL judging system. It's hard to say.

  10. I should have waited to post my predictions until after the Houston BOA event. What is wrong with me!!!
  11. I completely agree with the site. It is definitely not very user friendly.
  12. Based on the videos, I have to say that I think Churchill did a much better job than SFA....Just my opinion. I can definitely see why The Woodlands scored so high in music and they always have an incredibly difficult drill. They're always extremely enjoying to watch.
  13. Yes, I stand corrected. The actual name of the piece is.... "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini" Composer: Sergei Rachmaninoff
  14. Not sure if this has been posted yet........ The Woodlands High School Show Title: Rhapsody Music: "Rhapsody on a Theme," by Paganini
  15. I posted this on the Music for All forums and thought that I would post it again here... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I would really like to see Westfield and The Woodlands at the top at this one. I've always liked The Woodlands, they're one of those bands that very rarely have an off year, and I would really like to see them win a National Championship. I know it won't be this year for obvious reasons, but I really think they are one of those bands that deserve to win at Grand Nationals. Hopefully next year. As for Westfield, I've always liked them as well, but they here lately, they're just not consistent. They'll have a great year and two or three so, so years. Hopefull they'll get their consistancy back. I'd also like to see Spring come back soon with a vengeance. I guess we'll see! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Although LD Bell will probably at the top.......
  16. I agree that there are sports in the modern olympics that probably shouldn't be, but rhythmic gymnastics has been a regular for quite some time. I actually don't mind rhythmic gymnastics. What gets me is that fact that table tennis is an olympic sport. When I was young we called this ping-pong. What about badminton for that matter? With these sports being allowed into the olympics, where does the madness end.
  17. Welcome to the 21st century of the marching arts. Props are meant to bring another artistic element to a show, not to take away from the activity. Believe me, the bands that are using these are MOST DEFINITELY utilizing EVERY single person in the band. The main purpose of props is not to entertain the crowd as much as it is to help get the shows concept across. If you take away props from a show because people don't think their necessary, where does this mentality end. Think of all the things that all corps bands do that can be taken out of their marching shows. I not going to waste my time giving examples because I think you can come up with plenty on your own. Body movements, horn flashes, etc.... These are used to entertain the crowd as well, right? You see where I'm coming from? I would much rather a band add to a show, than take away! Whatever element that may be.
  18. I find it incredibly disappointing/shocking that The Woodlands, Spring, Westfield and Brazoswood are not going to this Super Regional. on a side note... Does anyone have a list of bands that will competing in the Lone Star Preview. another side note... I wish that the Houston Regional was a little later in the season. I really like the bands that attend this every year, but usually their shows are either not complete or still very dirty. As you can see the Houston Area events are the ones that I usually attend. Unless you count watching the live feeds attending. JB
  19. I thought it was an awesome movie as well, but Christian Bale's voice inflection really got on my nerves. In the original Batman, nothing changed but the outfit. The whole raspy, deeper voice thing really got to me.
  20. Yeah...Their show was actually entitled "Hide and Seek." Complere with tree trunks to hide behind. Fun show and concept...
  21. They don't specify onthe website... Not sure
  22. Langham Creek 2008 "Masquerade" Music by: Bela Bartok
  23. No, a quartet does not have to be memorized for you to be able to go to state S&E. It does in fact have to be a class 1, though.
  24. The name of the piece of Lux Aurumque, and it's a beautiful piece both played and sung....and yes all of Eric Whitacre's music has Dissonance. In fact most of his pieces have tone clusters, which is a twentieth century music term meaning that there are several pitches stacked on top of one another, either a half step or whole step up or down. Depending on the combination of pitches, they can create some amazing musical sounds. A little twentieth century counterpoint for ya!
