  1. You have not lived until you heard "Crank Dat Forrest Gump."
  2. Haha. No, the Poteet kids are pretty civil. My senior year we stayed with the Frenship High School band and became fast friends. They even applauded us when we came back from finals. I imagine Poteet and Friendswood will get along just fine.
  3. Poteet and Friendswood are staying at the same hotel. That's pretty wild.
  4. 8 hours a week is hardly excessive and I do not think it negatively affects school work. 4 of the top 10 graduates in my class were band kids and I don't even want to begin counting the other kids who were in the top 10%. Heck, I think my involvement in band probably helped my college applications stand out among other kids with high GPA's. Band is a time commitment, but the exceptional students will excel anyway.
  5. Yes, but I doubt GE was enough on its own to justify the gap between 3rd and 6th/7th if it's worth only 10% of the score. The Colony must have also had strong music/visual scores. A lot can change in a week.
  6. Indeed I think you are correct. As we get closer and closer to Tuesday, I'm starting to think we'll be seeing all 4 Area D bands in finals...
  7. Birdville did not advance to state. Therefore I think it would a bit difficult for them to make finals. :-)
  8. I'm a bit surprised by Allen. They haven't been placing as well at invitational contests this year as they usually do. I don't imagine their style/execution is any different from how it always is. Any thoughts?
  9. Yay Keller! It seems they have developed a habit of coming from behind in finals.
  10. Wow! Go Dripping Springs! Can't wait to see what they do at state.
  11. It's actually Haltom. Finals Schedule: 7:00 PM Roma H.S., TX (Exhibition) 7:15 PM Brazoswood H.S. 7:30 PM Cedar Park H.S., TX 7:45 PM Marcus H.S., TX 8:00 PM L.D. Bell H.S., TX 8:15 PM Hebron H.S., TX 8:30 PM Colleyville Heritage H.S., TX 8:45 PM Westfield H.S., TX 9:00 PM Berkner H.S., TX 9:15 PM Winston Churchill H.S., TX 9:30 PM Richland H.S., TX 9:45 PM Ronald Reagan H.S., TX 10:00 PM Haltom H.S., TX 10:15 PM The Woodlands H.S., TX 10:30 PM James Bowie H.S., TX 10:45 PM Hidalgo H.S., TX (Exhibition)
  12. Ok, so the finals list on the txbands live page is missing one. I'm guessing it's either Haltom or Clear Brook. Any word?
  13. State prelims 2003. Bad news. Moral of the story: watch your drum major......ESPECIALLY on an indoor field. Sound can be misleading.
  14. Friendswood has a pretty kick butt brass line. I haven't seen them this year, but they're probably still top notch.
  15. Only 10 finalist bands unfortunately.
  16. Or if there were no area finals like back in ye olden days. *briefly feels old*
  17. Very cool show. Definitely the highest degree of difficulty I've seen from Sherman and it's executed quite well. It's interesting to hear a different take on "Urban Dances" after having Poteet's arrangement ingrained in my head.
  18. I think Keller can win this. They were FIERCE at Plano East. That performance was the best I've ever seen them.
  19. I believe so. I'm still not sure where the state 06 tie breaker went wrong. After the three-way tie breaker, Churchill was clearly on top.
  20. They look at the three bands independently from the rest of the bands and assign ranks of 1-3 for each judge. Alice 2 1 3 3 1 10 Floresville 3 3 1 1 2 10 Calallen 1 2 2 2 3 10 So we still have a three-way tie. Now we eliminate Calallen because they have only one 1st place vote: Alice 1 1 2 2 1 7 Floresville 2 2 1 1 2 8 So Alice advances.
  21. Area C was REALLY strong that year. Poteet and Sherman went on to be gold and bronze medalists respectively at state. Wylie was pretty darn good too.
  22. I guess. Speaking from experience, Poteet goes in spurts. Very strong from 93-97, weaker from 98-00, back on the upswing from 01-02, very weak in 03, and probably the best Poteet has ever been from 04-06. The current band is also very strong, but I can see a dry spell happening soon. It's true that even in off years Poteet is still a strong 4A presence, but it's not like they win state every time they go.
  23. Poteet has only ever won twice and did not make state finals in 2003.........so I don't really know what you're getting at with the "all dynasties must fall" thing.
  24. It would be really neat to see Dickinson win this again. It's been awhile. I think the last time was 1993, the same year Poteet made its first state finals appearance.
  25. Here's a video of Poteet at Plano East: http://www.poteetpirateband.org/video/PMI07.html It's early season, but it's the whole show. EDIT: http://www.poteetpirateband.org/video/Area07.html Area finals. MUCH better.
