Area B Marching Band Contest
ftwdrummer replied to queso2992's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
We had an awful run at the football game tonight...but better tonight than tomorrow afternoon, true? Also, our new quads finally got in...this morning. Hallelujah. I'm trying to keep my enthusiasm for what's effectively my last real contest (unless a miracle happens) in check...it's not working as well as I'd hoped. Good luck to everybody tomorrow! -
[Major Event] UIL Region Contest 2008
ftwdrummer replied to Danpod's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Did anybody think to maybe send someone out there to live-blog it (Xenon)? Or at the very least, will we have reviews when all is said and done? Or is it soon enough after HEB for an additional set of reviews to be unnecessary? -
Monday: Full band, 5-7:30 Tuesday: Woodwinds & Pit, 4:15-6:15 Wednesday: Brass & Battery, 4:15-6:15 Thursday: Full band, 5-7:30 Friday: Gameday run-through Saturday: 1 hour, 30 minute-2 hour rehearsal/run-through (using the extra "performance" hour and the 8th hour left over) It's pretty annoying, having the band split on Tuesday and Wednesday. I mean, it's good for learning drill, but when it comes to cleaning...it's a fair bit easier to clean forms when you aren't trying to clean brass holes in a woodwind rehearsal, and vice versa. (Then again, what do I care? I'm in pit. Separated rehearsals means a day we don't have to lug stuff out.)

2008 HEB marching contest

Results from here, anybody? EDIT: Never mind...decided to not be lazy and went over and checked TxBLive...sorry to interrupt...we now return you to your regularly scheduled forum thread already in progress... -
Maybe...I'll think about it. Is anyone going to be at Area B who doesn't mind trying to write a full-blown review? (I would, but...kinda one of the performers...yeah).
-
Shark? I dunno...depends on what interests you. Will Xenon give us a full review for Area B, given that he skimped on ours at BOA Arlington to write Marcus's?

[Major Event] UIL Region Contest 2008

OK, given that McKinney North isn't 5A...no, there is no possibility of Area B sending 5. Area B has 29 5A bands, tops. -

Interesting quandary on result accuracy here, folks: According to the results sheet from Region 25 UIL, McKinney North is 5A. According to the alignments as of last year, they're not. So who's right? -

Advancing in 5A from Region 7 to Area B (in order of Region performance): Burleson North Crowley Weatherford Paschal -
Food...probably. Parents aren't allowed by UIL rules to move props on the field during a show, right?

Since apparently I'm now taking it on myself to bump this thread every week... Richland, from what I heard while loading, sounded good. Apparently, they had some issues with trucks getting to the game, so we went first despite being home. I'd personally like to hear from any Richland kids (hint, hint, b_sax) what they thought of us.

Saw Haltom's show tonight, after they beat us (Grr...if we could have gotten one measly fumble, we would have won). It's...interesting. The woodwinds and battery are fantastic, with some great soloists...but the brass was pretty iffy. The last third of the show was all over the place (I'm assuming that's because it's the newest part of the show). I have a lot of respect for the program...but I wasn't impressed by tonight's performance.

BOA Arlington
ftwdrummer replied to JustAddWat3r's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Does ANYONE know what's happening with recaps? Our directors don't even know what the results are. And the site promises full recaps by the Monday after the event. So what gives? -
Just read your review, Mr. Sanchez. I have one word in response to the opening of your review for my fair school: FOLD. j/k. Sorry I didn't get a chance to come up and say hi; I didn't finish loading the pit until Westmoore was on the field. Does anyone know why Trinity was in exhibition tonight? Or when they'll post recaps?

Apparently, Paschal got really lucky, then...we have all our closer drill (got it at the start of the week, I believe). We're redrawing the last set, but other than that, we're fine. Hopefully, we'll have finished learning the first half of the closer by tomorrow (depending on how much time we take to work on memorization in rehearsal this afternoon), and should have all the closer on the field by BOA next week.

Yay last block! Yay not having to be at the band hall at 4 AM! Yay going up against top-notch competition (as opposed to first band of the day last year)! Yay having the closer on the field (albeit probably really really dirty) by October 4th! Yay exclamation point overindulgence! We don't have a snowball's chance in the innermost circle of Dante's Inferno of making Finals, do we? -
We're now having a French horn play the alto sax solo in our second movement. Which makes sense, since most of our altos...aren't that good, and the French horn player was our one All-Stater last year. Second movement goes on the field tomorrow night, then hopefully we get the closer drill learned fast (like, in a week), put it on the field the next week, and have a week to clean before BOA!

It's after the quarter=152 section, but just before it bumps up to 176 at the end. Anyhoo... We put the full opener on the field tonight. All 43 sets. And got critique from some of the guys who quit band over the summer: our music is great; our visual...not as much. And in the second half, Paschal football...turned back into Paschal High School football. We lost 51-19 to Arlington Heights (major rival). ((((((

Probably ought to update this list now that I've gotten more into DCI... Harmonic Journey has grown on me...despite the dreck of a visual program... Rhapsody still has a special spot in my heart as the show that made me love drum corps... Star '91 and Star '93 are both amazing... Spartacus '08 is nothing short of godly. And I love Bluecoats this year. So, that bring my overall tally to: Star of Indiana: 1991, 1993 Phantom Regiment: 2003, 2005, 2008 Blue Devils: 1986, 2001, 2003 Bluecoats: 2007, 2008 Carolina Crown: 2004, 2007, 2008 Santa Clara Vanguard: 1989, 1999 The Cadets (all names): 1983, 1984, 1989, 1992, 2000

Drill Writing Program
ftwdrummer replied to Tnilli's topic in Drill Writers, Arrangers, and Composers Corner
I actually partially agree with him, Lindsey. The difference is: My price for women: $∞ Though you're currently sitting at $∞+1 (thanks for that recording!) -
Nowhere near as much as I'd like to have out. =[ We've learned all but a couple of sets in the first movement, but only played up to the 5/4 and stopped.
