Poteet disqualified?????
Basefiveftw replied to Thekingcmk's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
I love how (s)he deleted his/her post after finding out it was being received negatively. This is the internet, folks, once something is posted, it's out there, whether it be from the people farther down that quoted it or cached somewhere else. Think twice before you post something emotional. That being said, from the outside looking in, this decision was a totally mixed bag of emotions. The first thought that came to my mind when Poteet was disqualified was "man, I can't imagine being a senior or junior in that band right now. I'd be crying my eyes out." But then I thought of how it would feel to be in Forney's shoes, and how amazing it would be to be given a second chance. I just hope that at the end of the day, neither of these band programs feel any animosity toward each other. That would be the true tragedy. -

Dripping Springs High School's 2011 show "451." Uploaded today by the channel "dshsbandgeek," which is maintained by one of the current band parents. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0qekQ-1l2s -

Spartacus. (Only because the title didn't specify it had to be a Texas high school.) -
I know that I'm biased, but having been a part of the DS band in its "rise to prowess," I know one thing... both the students and directors have absolutely no interest in plateauing (spellcheck says it's a real word!). It will be interesting to see if they can rise to the challenge of competing with these truly top-notch bands. All of the younger students have basically had the program handed to them on a silver platter... They don't know what it's like to always be that "pretty good band" that's never the best, like us older ones do. It's entirely possible that they've hit their peak, although I certainly hope not. As an aside, I'm really interested to see how Vandergrift does. We were really hoping they would make it to state with us last year, simply because it would have been so awesome. It will be nice to see how we stack up against Conally and VR again, as we've had a whole state cycle without them! D: CP moving down is also huge... They have consistently gotten first at Westlake (area D's main non-UIL competition) and have always been a band we've aspired to hang with. I say "we" even though I've graduated.... Maybe it's time to move on. >.>

2010 New Uniforms
Basefiveftw replied to Xenon's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
They also makes it harder to hide sloppy marching, which is why I commend any band that wears white pants (if white doesn't go with your school colors, you can't really get around that). Although, they are hard to keep clean. D: -
Who were some of the smallest bands? In prelims? In finals?

Didn't Vista Ridge just move UP to 5A a year ago...?

Haha, I guess we just grow 'em tall here in DS. It never really occurred to me... We have one super tall tuba, around 6'5" or so, and most of our low brass is pretty tall. One of the basses, myself and another tenor are all above 6'1", but the snares are all short girls. -

Two of Dripping Springs' drum majors are fairly timid characters, one of which was running a 102 fever at the time, so I would be extremely surprised if either of them said anything. As for the third, I personally walked back to the busses with him from the dome and know for a fact that no words were exchanged between him and any other bands. edit: err, not sure if this has been brought up on these forums or not, but our drum majors were accused of being rude on a different site. Guess I'm defending them to the wrong crowd. -

Well, he did drop it and start cheering, but he did not "throw it." Anyway... this horse is fairly beaten. -

If I could hug you, I would. I know that all of us at Dripping feel the same about you guys... Had our places been switched, we would definitely have similar sentiments. I'll never forget at area two years ago when Hendrickson's drum major came over and congratulated us for making state. It was one of the nicest gestures I've ever seen from another band, and I will always remember it. -

As a current senior in the Dripping Springs band, I can attest for the feelings we shared last night. We knew we had performed really well, the best we had all season, but figured we would be lucky to be top 5, which would still be up from two years ago. (I'm not trying to sound arrogant AT ALL, and I truly apologize if it comes off that way). When they announced the first two bands, we all assumed that we hadn't made it. That is why we utterly erupted when they announced us. (On a side note, our directors refused to tell us how we stacked up in prelims, so we had no idea how we were doing). On behalf of my fellow band members, I would like to congratulate all of the bands that made it to that level of competition, and I truly and sincerely apologize if we seemed a bit overreactive. I hope that there are no hard feelings between us and anyone else. No one wants to be "that band..." -

From what I saw in a video of friendswood, their show sounds pretty amazing. In my opinion, however, the visual side of things was somewhat lacking. Lots of people out of step, crooked lines, etc... I think that if they can clean some of that up by tuesday, they will have a definite shot at a medal. -
AREA D Marching Contest
Basefiveftw replied to Mad.Hatter's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
We at Dripping Springs have been working our butts off too, ya'know. Like everyone else, we've been having our flu issues and weather issues (in my four years this has been the worst with both). We do think our scores are a bit strange, though. In marching we were ranked first and second, and in music we were first, third and sixth, oddly. One of the judges didn't even think we were worthy of top 4. I haven't listened to the tape or read the comments, but we were obviously doing something that he didn't like. I would blame it on going third, but that's a weak argument, and wouldn't explain why the other judges had us ranked so highly. Anyway, I wanted to congratulate all the bands on a great job. Especially Vandergrift, you guys are awesome. I wish they had stuck you in the top 4. Anyway, good luck Area D! -

Surprisingly, Hays and LBJ were actually ahead of Dripping and Hendrickson in prelims. I'm not sure if that was a fluke or not, but knowing how strong both DS and Hendrickson are, I'd say that the other two are in a pretty good position for finals. Maybe another area D sweep like two years ago is in store.
