has reagan's guard always been so enormous? getting major 2000's era Broken Arrow vibes from them, in a good way. -
I’d say until very recently owasso would have been a guaranteed finalist here. They’ve been a major presence in the national marching band scene for decades and have numerous grand national finalist appearances under their belt, and were 8th at San Antonio as recently as 2015. However, last year seemed to mark a pretty major regression from them. Hard to say at this point of that was an anomaly or indicative of a larger downward trend for them, but at the moment, I’d guess they’ll finish anywhere between 8th and 13th. If they do miss finals, it might be their first time ever in the history of the program (I’d have to double check that but it sounds plausible to me) point is, they’re very much in the mix for finals here

I Never know what to do with the Houston bands. There isn’t much of an established hierarchy tbh, it’s basically the woodlands out in front, and you could probably make the case that cy fair has established themselves as a clear second best program in the area, and then a deluge of like 16 programs that are all strong and beat each other all the time, often within the same season. Picking who makes the cut here is like drawing names from a hat -

Very interesting to see Coppell JV here- I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a program mount a separate JV marching show that competes separately from the varsity group. Also very intriguing to see a Nevada program compete here...pretty sure that’s a first for this contest -

my best guess @ placements- 1. Vandegrift- all captions 2. Leander 3. Vista Ridge 4. CTJ (this one's tough. i don't think they should be punished too harshly for the prop issue but I don't see how you could have them above the 3 I have ahead of them. I guess we'll see- their performance was undoubtedly inspiring and it was a fantastic musical run all things considered) 5. Cedar Park 6. Cedar Ridge 7. Westwood 8. Lake Travis 9. James Bowie 10. Rouse incredible showings by all our first time finalists! -

major props to them for performing as well as they did given the prop placement mishap- those visual scores will certainly take a hit but that could have easily been a disaster but it wasnt. -

Watched an early video of cedar park and they are looking pretty great! That drum break....wowza!! I could easily see them jumping back up into the top half here -
Early thoughts: 1. Hebron 2. Flower Mound 3. Keller 4. Marcus 5. Cedar Park 6. Timber Creek 7. LD Bell 8. Waxahachie 9. Prosper 10. Coppell Alternates: Wakeland, Owasso, Keller Central Hoping Hebron sets the tone here for a championship season, but could easily see FloMo ahead of them- assuming these two will continue to be neck and neck Keller has blossomed into a full fledged powerhouse and I’m betting they’ll hold on to their bronze medal, even with the return of Marcus. I’m maybe most excited to see what Marcus brings to the table, now that the new staff will have their first chance to lead the design effort. Could easily see cedar park medaling here, too, but only if they really amp up their design. I have a hunch timber creek will edge out LD Bell, and that both have a great chance of breaking 80 points. I have waxahachie, prosper and Coppell filling out finals, though wakeland or Keller central seem like strong possibilities as finalists. I honestly can’t believe I’m predicting Owasso to miss here, but I guess that’s where we’re at now.

1. Broken Arrow HS, OK 2. Blue Springs HS, MO 3. LD Bell HS, TX 4. Haltom HS, TX 5. Union HS, OK 6. Coppell HS, TX 7. Jenks HS, OK 8. Bixby HS, OK 9. O’Fallon Township HS, IL 10. Franklin HS, TN 11. Rosemount HS, MN 12. Grain Valley HS, MO 13. Lincoln HS, SD 14. Stephen F. Austin HS, TX This has to be the most stacked STL lineup ever. I think all the TX groups attending have a shot at finals but there’s not enough room for all of them. Also, does anyone know what happened to Bellevue West last season? They went from top 4 finishes here and silver medal in midland to completely missing finals in a weaker field. Thinking they could shoot back up the rankings if last season was just a fluke. Also not sure what to make of Bentonville or Air Academy -
Early thoughts: 1. Hebron HS, TX 2. Carmel HS, IN 3. Claudia Taylor Johnson HS, TX 4. Vandegrift HS, TX 5. Avon HS, IN 6. Leander HS, TX 7. The Woodlands HS, TX 8. William Mason HS, OH 9. Homestead HS, IN 10. Union HS, OK 11. Park Vista HS, FL 12. Round Rock HS, TX Absolutely NEED a Texas band to win this year, it’s been too long. I’m personally rooting for Hebron and feel like they, of all the GN attendees, have the most sophisticated, challenging design, but it will be entirely dependent on the strength of their visual design and performance. Hopefully they’ll bring something 2015-esque, which doesn’t get a whole lot of credit for being brilliant visually. I don’t see Carmel finishing lower than second but would love to see a 1-2, or maybe even a medal sweep from TX groups. CTJ is the other group that feels uniquely positioned to make a run for the eagle. They can really compete with the Indiana powerhouses visually in a way that the other TX groups can’t, and if they bring the right show they’ll be tough to beat. The prospect of Vandy being the first group to ever win GN on their first appearance is an exciting one but, for my money, they’ve yet to show they have the design necessary to pull it off, but we’ll see- they most certainly have the talent. Avon in 5th feels like a huge gamble but unless they bring their best show in ages I’m not sure they’ll be able to keep up with the TX powerhouses, assuming they all bring their best work. Could easily see Leander and The Woodlands finishing higher/ being real title contenders but I’ll wait until I see their shows to speculate further on that. I’d feel more confident in their chances if they didn’t have to deal with so many other Tx groups. Mason and Homestead feel like finals locks, union should bounce back after a somewhat rocky transition year (not sure if they had a director change or just a new design team but last year felt decisively off for them) Park Vista, aside from Vandegrift, is the most high profile GN debut this year and I feel pretty good about their finals chances. Discussion of Round Rock’s supposed collapse has gone a little off the rails here- they’re still absolutely a GN finals caliber program and I’m assuming this year will see them rebound. Other major finalist contenders are one of my absolute favorite programs Ayala (CA), Marian Catholic (IL), Center Grove (IN), Harrison (GA) and Rockford (MI)

Early thoughts: 1. Vista Ridge 2. Timber Creek 3. Clovis 4. James Martin 5. Mansfield 6. Summit 7. Wylie East 8. Granbury 9. Del Rio 10. Burleson Centennial Potential finalists: Permian, Midland Lee I think Timber Creek is absolutely capable of pulling an upset on VR if they continue to see such extreme growth from season to season, but Vista is definitely the favorite.
