2012 5A State Marching Contest
meyousic replied to ~ME~'s topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I'm not affiliated with Duncanville, but was privileged to see their heart-tugging performance in SMC Prelims and was wowed by them. They marched and played such a different and emotional show this year. Their on-field warm-up was what got my attention--BEAUTIFUL!!! Then their opening set grabbed my attention--their drill was all over the field, which is extremely difficult to manage--but they did more than manage and their marching was outstanding! Holy Woodwind technique!! Those fingers were movin'--and together!! And that front ensemble and battery... WOW! Then there is the Colorgaurd--tons of them--with great routines! I was shocked like most others that they didn't grab a finals spot, but luckily I was there to witness such an amazing show. Glad someone posted it on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sWARkurBMQ I have to admit that was my favorite show of the night. (ahhhh.... MAHLER!!!) Congrats to all the bands that performed on Tuesday and Best of luck to all the Texas bands. :-) AND a big thanks to txbands.com for providing all they do for this website. Great job!! -

Area G: 1. Calallen HS 2. Roma HS 3. Alice HS alt. HM King Scores were kinda everywhere in prelims, but finals were kinda accurate. Floresville was very impressive in various ways, but didn't advance. Area G bands are VERY much improved and should definitely be in the mix in SA! Calallen and Roma march extremely well and Alice sounds pretty darn good!!!!! -

How is Duncanville HS looking this year??? -
Try a Clark Fobes San Francisco Model. These are custom made mouthpieces that produce great tone and articulation for Soprano clarinets, Bass, or Contras. His Europa and Chicago Models are great as well. Try a fobes mouthpiece with a Robert Scott barrel and it makes a great combination. Vandoren M13-Lyre-Profile 88's are good for Middle School & High School marching band. (The Selmer C85 is a great mouthpiece if you find the right combination with reeds). Just some words from the wise. ;-)

Here is Alice HS and Roma HS -
Alice High School at Area G marching contest. Sound quality is not the best on this recording, but they sounded pretty amazing at Area. Still wondering how they ended up 5th??? It was extremely windy that day/night. If they improve their individual marching then they should do well. Can you imagine they have a non-varsity marching band as well???!!! At least I think they still have the other marching band. Craziness!!!

Don't count out the Area G bands by any means. They have greatly improved and it will be interesting to see how they stack up this year. At Area G, Calallen was only 3 points behind Roma after finals. They can both march extremely well. Alice HS and H.M. King (kingsville) both sound pretty darn good this year!!! Too bad Alice marches 2nd in the line up, but they can hold their own (amazing sound) and is a BIG band!!!! Edcouch is quite small and did well at Area, but having seen many state contests, I would not bet on them. We shall see....

Here is the Gregory-Portland HS Band (very windy that day). Alice HS is very good as is HM King (Kingsville) and Calallen HS. Can't find vids of the others except a very windy version of Calallen. I believe Alice HS was ranked second in 4A music at Westlake. Gregory-Portland HS Calallen HS

Some VERY MUCH improved 4A bands here in Region 14. Alice, Calallen, Gregory-Portland, Laredo Nixon, LBJ, H.M. King (Kingsville), & Tuloso-Midway were all very strong in various areas. Alice HS sounds AMAZING and their marching has greatly improved from last weekend at Westlake, Calallen marches better than any band in the area, G-P sounds AMAZING and has a MONSTER tuba section. They will all do well next weekend at Area. Best of luck to all the 4A bands advancing to Area next week. Area G will be a very interesting contest!!! I 4A 1 12:15

[Major Event] UIL State Contest

Duncanville should have definitely been up there. They had the best performance in my opinion. I had goosebumps throughout the show. --Definitely no where near 10th place-- The sonority and maturity of the sounds stood out from any other band. Coppell, Marcus, and Hebron sounded very good as well. Very well played and marched (not easy drill by any means)!!! The best D'ville show I have heard/seen. Kudos to those kids for a job well done! -

2008 Duncanville Marching Invitational

I beg to differ, but the judges were pretty much dead on. Austin Westlake was pretty darn good. They played better in prelims, but they put out some pretty amazing sounds that night and definitely outplayed the rest. Westlake's brass and woodwinds were pretty impressive. Then there was Lake Highlands and they were a huge surprise that day. They played and marched the heck out of their show. They sounded great for such a small ensemble. The reason some bands do well year after year is because they are good programs and work hard. One could say the same thing about competing at the State level. Why do the same bands continue to place so well at the State Marching Contest or BOA? B/c they work their butts off and are pretty darn good. -
Hello Everybody! My name is Jeff Garcia and I recently relocated to Corpus Christi from the D/FW area a couple of months ago and am looking to teach in between 5-10 students. Also, I am available for master classes on the weekends and possibly some evenings. I taught in Duncanville for 13 years as well as the Plano, Coppell, Desoto, and Waxahachie. My former students include some of the top All-State talent in Texas, as well as last year's top clarinet player in the 5A track. I have also had former students participate in the nationally syndicated program "From the Top". I am hoping some of the students and band directors in the area take advantage of this opportunity. Please contact me via e-mail or by phone and I can provide references if needed. Thanks...JG 214.336.9892 :-)
