I like Ticheli's technical, bombastic pieces (a la Blue Shades, Vesuvius, Symphony No. 2) more than his lyrical ones, which are usually pretty simplistic. Whitacre's strong background in choral works makes him probably the best of current wind ensemble composers for lyrical, beautiful pieces. My vote: October.

Well, my theme song would start out with the fanfare from Richard Strauss' first horn concerto then go into "The Impossible Dream" from "The Man of La Mancha." Oh yeah.

'Round here, I've seen West Side Story too many times, along with Appalachian Spring and The Planets. Symphonic Metamorphosis has been done a lot, but there's enough different spins on it where it hasn't completely lost its freshness. Although it's not there yet, I'm predicting Scheherazade will become the next overplayed show.

I'd go with cotton or polyester. Yeah, it'll be a little more muffled than leather, but leather gloves just look funny with most band uniforms.

I feel great. I slept until 10 this morning. Oh wait... I wasn't at camp... I graduated... Anyway, I'd usually have a little bit of a sore upper body during the first week of camp, then it would go away. I stretched well, I just hadn't used those muscles in that way in a while. To drum majors getting hoarse - don't "yell." Instead think about projecting your voice. You'll be a lot louder and have more vocal stamina if you shout from your gut instead of your voice box. It's an air thing, kind of like belting when singing. You might already be doing all that, but if not - I'd give a shot. Hoarse drum majors are bad news.
