  1. Oh, btw, why in the world isn't Lux Aurumque up against American Elegy instead of October? Lux is probably Whitacre's prettiest band work.
  2. I think American Elegy is far superior to October. It's much more melodically driven. Most of Whitacre's works, as pretty as they are, are really just a bunch of beautiful sounding chords thrown together. Well, perhaps "thrown" isn't the best word to use, but you get the point. I mean, I could sit down at a piano and improv stuff that sounds a lot like Whitacre's works, but I couldn't do the same for Ticheli. Thus I appreciate Ticheli's works more.
  3. I'm pretty sure Arlington is the same day as The Woodlands' Lone Star Preview competition, so I wouldn't at all be surprised if they end up going to Houston.
  4. Yeah... If Westfield goes I *might* just have to buy a plane ticket. Actually, I'll probably end up going anyway if all the bands mentioned above really are participating. Complete insanity I tell you. Plus, I might as well see the stadium one last time after having two good high school experiences there.
  5. That's freaking ridiculous. I wanna think it's safe to say that some bands will miss finals for the first time *cough*northernbands*cough* Hopefully we'll have at least five TX bands in finals if things go well. I'm kinda worried, though, 'bout that particular Georgia band winning the entire thing. We shall see I suppose.
  6. Ok, I'm sure someone has mentioned this by now, but I'm too lazy to go back through the archives. Any word yet on who is gonna represent Texas next year up in Indianapolis? Some that I've heard confirmed: Bell, Reagan, SFA, + The Woodlands Some that I'm waiting for a word on: Marcus, Richland, and...Westfield perhaps (It has, afterall, been 4 years). BOA will probably announce all this stuff soon enough, but I'm getting bored of waiting.
  7. All I know is that The Woodlands didn't make it.
  8. "In Search of the G Spot" Poles, lingerie, electric piano, soft rock, the whole deal...
  9. I have a really ambivalent view towards Marcus' show. When I saw it at Arlington, I thought "That band needs to win music performance." Yet at the same time I didn't want it to place in the top three. I just found the show to be too GE grubbing and to be lacking in the difficulty aspect of things. I won't at all, however, be surprised if Marcus does great at state considering how awesome they sound.
  10. Wait a sec. Now I'm confused. Spring was the band that got first, right? You inverted the order...?
  11. Nothing about the results surprises me all that much. Congrats to Spring. They had a pretty clean show last time I checked- especially musically. Not at all shocked by Brazoswood's placement. Their show was freaking awesome at LSP (where they got screwed, might I add ). The kids at TWHS might be a bit disappointed, but I don't think they should be all that concerned. I think my freshman year we got like 3rd or 4th at area and ended up placing 5th at state. Anyway, good luck to all the state contenders.
  12. My top four (in no particular order w/ some comments): Spring- I only caught the last part of their show at LSP. While I was out in the parking lot, I heard this band playing that I thought sounded awesome. Lo and behold it ended up being Spring. No big surprise, really. They've always been good- people just haven't recognized it because of, well, less-than-spectacular show designs in the recent past. I'll be shocked if they don't place in the top three at area. They seem to be back on the rise. I'd like to see region 9 dominate the marching arena once again. Brazoswood- I saw the show for the first time at LSP. Honestly, the show blew me away. I really liked the balance between the upper and lower voices. I can see how this band won music last year at Arlington (correct me if I'm wrong; my memory sucks). And, call me shallow, but the flags had pretty colors The Woodlands- Ok...this show is really well-designed. I love the music. I love the staging. On the downside, it's also really difficult (at least musically). Thus, it comes as little surprise to me that it's a bit dirty. Then again, I don't think the band will have much of a problem making it to state. My main question is how the judges will react to the harmonized vocal. Should be interesting. College Park- Second year in existence? First year in real competition? Will they (or perhaps better stated "can they") make the cut? I think the band is up for the challenge. Making finals at you first BOA regional and placing well at LSP show that CP is certainly a talented, young band. They have a great director at the helm of the program who will surely aid them in the process. Well, that's all I have...
  13. Recently saw TWHS. I'll just say the show's pretty good .
  14. I thought it was awful. The plot was lame and had little depth. The script was also atrocious (maybe it was the acting, too- it's hard to tell).
  15. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. I actually wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was (I'm usually disappointed by movies). I read the book a few years ago and liked it; this allowed me to not be disappointed by the ending in the movie 'cause I knew what was going to happen. I know some people dislike the fact that the aliens just die off at the end without being nuked or something, but I personally find the ending to be pure genius. The only truly contrived part of it all was the whole father-son reuniting thing...yeah...I'm pretty sure very few people could survive that huge wave of flames that cascaded over the hill.
