Ok, this takes the cake for weird solos. Theres something wrong with your music when you have to have a legend in the beginning to understand all the sound effects. http://www.dornpub.com/CatPDF/Rol.pdf It's called "A Ballad of Roland" By Lamb

Westview is in Austin.

PARENTS!!!
Mculbert07 replied to bossman's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
We have some parents that are around 24/7, but its a good thing. They aren't clingy, and somehow they have found out a way to get everyone to love them. Yes mom, I'm talking about you. And you Mrs. Liberty. (I know you two are reading this. We all love you) But then there are some parents who just don't get how to communicate with us. We still appreciate them, but sometimes they just kind of weird us out. -
How Many Reeds do you go through in 1 Week?
Mculbert07 replied to rdzsaxplaya's topic in Section Heaven
Honestly, during marching season, I will play a reed until it is literally not playable. We go through reeds like crazy because how hard we're playing on them. I don't start taking care of my reeds until it's Region/State audition season/concert season. -
Tenor: Selmer Paris Mark VII Legit- Selmer S80 C* (I'm looking for a Vintage soloist, but I can't find one for less that 200 bucks let me know if you are interested in selling?) Classic Vandoren size 4s. Jazz- Otto Link New York 7* Rico Jazz Select 3M. I took a Rovner alto ligature and it didnt fit, so I thickened it on a spot with velcro. Sounds alright. Alto: Selmer Paris Mark VII Circa 1977 (so cool) 98% original laquer. Legit- Selmer S90 (yes, 90) Vandoren 3 1/2, Selmer ligature Jazz- Meyer G 6 Stock Lig, Rico Jazz Select 3M I love my horns...

Some people in the front of the bus once realized that if you throw something out the window, theres a good chance it will come back in through another window behind them. They got some peanuts and had a competition to see how many people they could hit. Seeing as how you cant be very accurate in this... past time... about 4 of us got hit quite a bit.

I'm not a drum major, but just from watching people... Don't change your conducting technique every 2 weeks.

I'm marching one of our schools SA80 Series IIs, but for concert season and All State Auditions, I'm using a Mark VII. The horns I've gotten the play out of have all been Selmer Paris horns. If you're getting a Selmer, don't get the American crud. If you're going Yamaha, get a custom. They can work for all types of playing. Keilworths are wonderful for jazz, but I havent tried one for any legit music. Cannonballs are definately jazz horns, since they were modeled after Cannonball Adderly's design. Old Conns are great for jazz, but make sure you get an old one. 10Ms are probably best. What kind of setups are people using here?

Videos from this year
Mculbert07 replied to Mculbert07's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
I found a video of Brazoswood if anyone is interested. It's straight off of their website www.bucband.org Just click on the most recent competition (Lonestar/Woodlands) and click video. -
I've heard some pretty interesting Hendrickson bus stories... but that one takes the cake.

I'm trying to find videos of bands from this season, thanks to Skippy's generosity, my collection is now up to the massive number of... one. Post links? I think everyone would like to see Marcus, Westfield, Ronald Reagan, Churchill, Spring, and some of the other big names if they haven't had a chance to see them at competitions.

Etiquette at competition
Mculbert07 replied to HashBrownJM's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
I've seen the best and worst... I've seen parents who stand and clap for every band, I've seen parents who clap only for their own, parents who are rude in performances, parents who try to love everything. We're all guilty of this: Criticizing other bands. Their technique, their music, whatever. We all say, "Man, they sound great, but they look like crud." or something to that effect. But we should all save it for later. Or just keep it to yourself. I wish we did was CP and Leander do: Stand at set while announcements are called. That's so classy to me. I've been to competitions where bands scream so loud during finals announcements that you can't hear who else made finals. I've seen groups of people excited and happy that other bands didn't make finals. Be empathetic, I'm sure all of us have had an experience where we either haven't made finals or haven't come in the place we feel we deserve. Think of how that band feels. Always think to yourself, "What kind of legacy to I want to leave behind for this band? What sort of image do I want to give other people of our program?" This has been a Public Service Announcement from Michael Culbertson -
QUOTE (whoever @ whenever) Anything said about Phantom 06 vs Phantom 89 The only reason I put 89 over 06 is the feeling I get after watching the show. After I watch 89, I'm pumped, and ready to start learning brass. (Accursed reeds and rules) After I watch 06, My jaw drops and I wonder how on earth they are able to play that well. In all aspects except for GE, 06 wins, and will get me on my feet at the end of the show, but 89 gets me on my feet in the first 2 minutes, and as soon as I sit down, I end up on my feet again. But like you've all said, it's a matter of opinion.
