Band in College
G'townPIT replied to Serardian's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
And what about summer music festivals? Aspen, Tanglewood, Round Top which is in Central Texas, etc. Those are targeted at college music majors. Anyone had experience with that? Applications for the festivals are usually due in January and I'm thinking about it. -

I'm playing bassoon in our high school's musical. We're playing My Fair Lady. -

University of Michigan undecided -
Are there any concert band pieces that actually use contra-bassoon?

At the start of the season, the inside of both my middle fingers had horrible blisters. Fabric band-aids or this liquid brown stuff that you wipe over them help.

So I went to the crossmen camp, lots of potential there as you would expect. Some things seemed a bit unorganized, like the girls basketball team coming into the gym across ours and having practice at 6 am! George Hopkins came in and gave us a few words of encouragment. He basically told us that he's getting rid of the crossmen so that they can become as successful as the Cadets. Everyone that I talked to was really happy with the staff. Things looking up for the Crossment! and I made it to the next cut!

Fundraiser ideas...
G'townPIT replied to rsb3's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
We rent out this building downtown and make a haunted house out of it every year. All the band students and parents help "decorate it" and then the band students get into scary costumes and do business. It makes a lot of money and is kinda fun to do. -
Number of AP classes = fun!!

What could they do to them? They already have established reputations and most of them are retired from their jobs. Maybe the could revoke their medicare lol

Another thing to consider is the high number of outstanding bands this year. I imagine it's quite difficult to distinguish placements correctly for 31 amazing bands. In my opinion, the best system of judging at this level would be the tick system. However, the judges are all men, most likely age 60+, with huge guts. So they could be somewhat senile...

I'm pretty sure you can only compete in one type of competition. So I'd have to say they're only doing the moving drumline show. Do any of you Martin kids know Ethie? He plays bass drum, he moved to Dallas last year from Georgetown. Yeah the Marcus show is always insane... I remember one year when the pit and battery members traded instruments for part of the show! It's a shame that you won't be able see it this year! -

Marching Basoon
G'townPIT replied to the_DRUM_MAJOR's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
lol I just tried to walk around my house with my basson on a neck strap, it's nearly impossible to play. You have to have the upper body absolutely still because the shock from taking a step moves the reed in your mouth A LOT and screws up your embouchure. Yeah, I have no idea how that kid is doing it. -

Like having four snares automatcally goes against you?? Add some scoops and you'll be alright. btw, they added a fifth, he had a hurt leg but it's healed. And yes, it's just as clean.
