  1. It'd be great to see Richland back at the State level this year! Which will be no small feat considering the Area they are in...

  4. Sorry for the double post, my computer is stupid. And the edit button isn't working...? Cant figure out how to delete it. I agree that everyone is dirty at this point, but there are different kinds of dirty. In some cases you say "wow, that curve/box/circle is really dirty!," while in other cases (like a few moments in College Park's show) you are left asking "wow, what is that supposed to be?" There are still two weeks to go, though. That's a lot of time to clean everything up. As most bands are finishing up drill and coming out of "learn show as fast as humanly possible" operating mode, they can focus more on fine line detail. They'll be much better come October 6th.
  5. They DEFINITELY sound better than usual. I'm still not sold on drill design/execution, but I think it can get them into finals. Hopefully both TWCP and TWHS will rock the house in finals at Conroe this year!!!
  6. I don't think a 1A band is on the schedule.
  7. Is SFA 3A or 4A?
  8. For some reason they decided to forego Denton and travel to the St. Louis Super Regional later in the season. Which is kind of a bummer. :/ How would you compare this year to last years performance level/show design?
  9. Would you say that their "Wandering Stars" show is OUT OF THIS WORLD?
  10. Whoops, of course they are! I just cut and paste the schedule from the MFA forums, so it's not entirely my fault...
  11. I've always wondered, are pre-shows judged? Or does judging begin once the announcement is over?

A brand new stadium and a great schedule! To me, Bowie and Marcus have the top two completely locked up. I don't think anyone attending this regional can touch them, at least not this early in the season. Finals Locks (Bands I cannot imagine finals without, in no order): Bowie CTJ Richland Marcus Cedar Park Ronald Reagan Upper Bubble (Bands that I really think have a chance, in no order): Flower Mound Berkner Hebron Coppell Martin Keller Outside Bubble (Bands that could be darkhorses and sneak in the top 10): Wakeland Vandegrift Plano East I'm not going to spoil my predictions (it is a contest after all!), but the band I had the hardest time placing was Reagan. I just have no idea what level they are going to be on this year. I'm hopeful, though!
  13. I agree with everyone else that both systems are valuable and have their merits, but two specific things about UIL drive me crazy: 1. The State Contest is on a Tuesday (inconvenient for....everyone, parent or student). Because the contest is awkwardly scheduled, the stands are rarely filled to capacity and it takes students out of school (which is fun, yes, but inconvenient). One of the things I think is most special about BOA is that for most events, the stands are packed (in finals) with fans that go wild for everyone. Performing for that many people is a unique and precious experience that UIL doesn't provide. 2. Strict 8 minute time limit. This is huge pain in the **** and a constant worry for programs all season long, and even more, it limits creative development of a show. I heard this rule was instituted mainly to keep football halftime from running over ridiculously, but I don't think that's a good enough reason.
  14. Update to Bowie: Music by Holst and Mussorgsky To me, that translates to "The Planets" (hence the title, "Stellae Erannte) and "Pictures at an Exhibition" Exciting exciting exciting. Bowie is definitely the greatest question mark of the season. Potentially (although unlikely), they could be Regional, Super Regional, Area, State, and Grand National Champions. That is, IF they continue last year's momentum....and get lucky. Nevertheless, it's an exciting proposition
  15. From the BOA Forums: The Woodlands, TX : "Letters to Home" "The Promise of Living" by Aaron Copland and music by David Diamond
  16. Ha, it's Cedar Park's show but backwards!
  17. Wow, that's some great rep. For those unfamiliar with the music, "Hope" was The Woodland's ballad in 2009, and Mahler Symphony No. 2 was the basis for most of Cedar Park's championship show last year. This is the first Duncanville show I'm excited to see since 2008! They are going to sound great come November.
  18. Ronald Reagan HS "Let it Shine" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3FeRsbwf-8 They look a bit larger than in recent memory, which is good! Some interesting drill moves are being executed and they are making some decent sounds! I'm a bit more hopeful for GN finals after seeing this. Still bubble at this point, though. James Bowie HS "Stellae Errantes" (Wandering Stars)
  19. Takigan's right, it really isn't that big of a deal. I bet playing "last year's concert music" is fairly common practice. We're just noticing now because Marcus is such a visible program. Besides, LD Bell has recycled show music in the past (Lux Arumque in 2005 and 2007 shows, and Music for Prague 1968 in 2005 and 2008, off the top of my head), and no one really minded, so nbd. Even if you contend that the Wind Symphony previously playing Toccata and Fugue is an advantage, then kudos to Marcus. There's no rule against something like this, and they're smart to capitalize on such an opportunity. So either way, you can't really complain.
  20. They SHOULD sound great considering their Wind Symphony placed 3rd in TMEA State playing Toccata and Fugue! Smart move, I have to say.
  21. L.D. Bell: "The Devil's Staircase" "Ave Maria" by Bach "Nox Aurumque" by Eric Whitacre and others. Every year, Marcus places a clue to the theme of their show on the band's website. Two years ago it was a candelabra. Last year it was a Ferris wheel. THIS YEAR it is a key. So...their show somehow involves keys.
  22. Although that right there says a whole lot about how they might sound this year, I am equally curious. Ms. Drinkwater has been zeroing in on the top spot of this contest for several cycles now, and she certainly doesn't seem to be letting up.
  23. I mean, the band world is so incestuous that it's hardly possible to get a totally impartial judging panel. Every director knows each other or has some affiliation with other schools, whether it be from a convention, college, or tutelage. Besides, I'm pretty sure that the region votes on the judges so it's obvious that the directors did not take issue with his tenure at Spring. In fact, Region 9 seems to like Bill Watson a lot--he has also judged their UIL Marching contest in recent years.
