5A finalists
oh_snap44 replied to twizzlaar's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
All of Marcus' props are made by band parents and much of the props they use have been recycled from years past. Anyone remember the giant flowers from 2004? They were made from PVC pipes, fun foam, electrical tape, and spray paint. The petals from those flowers became bird beaks in 2005. And much of the rolling props have been used for years as well. The "$12,000" rumor is ridiculous...it does take money to make the props (paint, nails, wheels, etc), but I can't imagine it costing so much to put them together. -

BOA and UIL events are judged totally different. Yes, the UIL system has the reputation for being inconsistent in rankings, but that doesn't mean it's invalid or completely "messed up". Not to mention, a difference in one ranking up or down could merely be attibuted to a good or bad run. To say that the system is "messed up" this year because Bell won one contest on Saturday and came in second on Tuesday is kind of an insult to the kids at Marcus. They've been up there with Bell all year, coming in ahead of them in the Area B competition just a few weeks ago. If anything, that shows a little bit of consistency in the UIL judging system. -

I could be wrong, but as Marcus left the field, part of their "clam shells" didn't clear the endzone. They were busy trying to get the band into the stands for pictures and it didn't look like they noticed they were still in bounds. It wasn't by very much, but they were over the line. -
Painting sets isn't too confusing...we used paint pens to mark our individual marching number on each dot. Even if you had 2 of your own dots right next to eachother, it was easy to remember which was which...spray paint dots come out different every spray.

I can't agree more. I don't mean this in any way against the bands who competed this year or in the years before... Wouldn't it make it more competative to move GN around? I mean, you can't deny the fact that the bands up north have the priviledge of going to Nats every year. Year after year, they have the chance to showcase themselves at GN, while bands from farther away can only come every few years, if at all. Besides, wouldn't the entire competition be sweeter if you knew you were competing against ALL of the best bands in the country...not just the same ones from that general area? Whoever had the idea to use the superregionals as a way to find the top bands to go to GN...I second that...good idea -
Random question, I know.... What band would you pick for the "Miss Congeniality" award this season (if it existed)?

Everyone understands that you want to get some kind of feedback on your band's performance, but I think you may be going about it the wrong way. It's cool to comment on how you thought the competition went, but self-hyping and digging for compliments is a fast track way to give your band program a bad rep. Martin has had a great year this year. Your program has really surprised a lot of people with your accomplishments. I got to see you during Birdville Finals and I was impressed by your performance. Good luck to your program in the future. :-) -

Congrats to all the bands that performed this weekend! I got to catch the finals performances (after BTHOO Baylor!) and it was definitely worth the money and the drive. Thanks for a great show...can't wait until next year's bloodbath! -
uh...thanks Tino....{you didnt have to delete your post!!!!} you spelled my last name wrong, too. The movie isn't as scary as the previews make it out to be. It's more about the suspense of the priest's trial. I was pretty scary for me though...seeing the similarities b/w myself and the main character...a lot of it was more than just the name. That's what REALLY freaked me out.

At my first BOA (Huntsville 2002), we were watching Finals and Bell was performing. They were doing a very fast move (it looked kind of like the three man weave) at the front of the field and a trombone just disappeared under people. There one second, gone the next. He got up and back in pretty fast, but it looked like that one hurt. Last year at Area C prelims, we were in our closer and the tenor sax in front of me clipped another guy and rolled over backwards and back into the form. It just looked like he added some tumbling to the drill. After the run, he was hurting pretty bad though.... And not marching related..... I was running a "Spirit Lap" with my section after a Thursday rehearsal last year. My friend decided to run at me with his water jug like he was going to dump it on me, so I tried to dodge him. Ended up having to jump over some baritones out the ground as well and totally wiped out right in front of the drumline and all of the drill techs. That one hurt a lot.

Actually, they were supposed to be fairies. Not sure anyone ever got that last year...including the band. I've never heard owls before....but I can see where you get it. Marcus is in Flower Mound, but it's not "Flower Mound Marcus High School". The actual name is "Edward S. Marcus", but I seriously doubt you'll hear them by anything other than "Marcus" at competitions etc.

I wish I could be there, but we're playing Colorado at home this week. The line-up at Arlington is insane this year...I am so jealous of everyone who's going. Should be a great show. Good luck to all the bands competing!!!
