Mansfield 2011
drummerjoe replied to Cookie_MonsterSR's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Man, they both just BARELY out of finals. Mansfield was in 21st in prelims, and Legacy was in 16th. Legacy was 0.25 outside of making finals. Gah, what a close competition! Both bands would have done really well in finals. -

True. I'd say it comes in waves: next year you'll see another school with many members on the forums. -

Lonestar Drumline Contest

Cedar Park and Round Rock aren't really the only contenders for the champion. Really it's between those two, Plano East, Oak Ridge, Martin, and Richland. That's based on what I've seen in the past (and heard from CP and about Plano East). Any of the lines in the division could have had a miraculous good season and take the championship. One difference this year is the finals, though. A change in position may take place, who knows. -

I just got a bit frustrated because I know Maverickband15 in person. I've always been nice to him and said good things about McNeil, but he lacks respect for the program at Round Rock. Also, it's my senior year and we've just had the most successful band season in recent years and the greatest final marching season for me. It ticks me off to see someone trying to tell us we didn't deserve our placement. -

It was just by 0.2 I didn't get to see either show, but the recaps are posted. The link is posted in this thread previously. -
Usually not at all. In UIL, the judges only see if you are doing what you are doing well. That just means if you perform your show well, then you will do well. Difficulty of the show will often impress a judge though, so if a band with a more difficult show performs it equally as well as a band with a less difficult show, then the former would place better. This isn't the case at other contests, though. Many contests do incorporate difficulty into the scoring method.

It's called "We know him in person and he goes out of his way to rag on the RRHS Band/Drumline" Plus, shmeh and I are the only two Round Rock students who have replied to him. All the others are just people who have noticed his liking of McNeil and hatred of Round Rock in the past. -

You ALWAYS place Round Rock lower than they should be. I bet if McNeil had that last finals spot (instead of 39th) then you would have ranked them in the top five just behind Cedar Park and put Round Rock fourteenth. Hey wanna learn something cool? Other drumlines stand still too. It's called a HOLD. In fact, Round Rock has fewer holds than most of the other bands at that competition. I just took a count: Round Rock drumline has a total of 6 holds, which include just 7 sets of their ~100 set show. And in one of those holds, they aren't even playing: it's during the Ballad! So please stop ragging on our drumline for only standing still (as if it's even a big deal!) and start recognizing what's actually going on. Whenever the McNeil drumline starts playing some of the notes Round Rock does (I'll even let y'all try it standing still) then I'll start considering your comments as legitimate. Until then, please stop underrating the Round Rock Band/Drumline. -

Well the standstill division typically plays more difficult music better than the marching division because of the lack of drill. So in the standstill division it's a lot more about the music than in the marching division. -

Standstill division is more about quality of music and less about the visual aspect. Marching incorporates a visual aspect. Both divisions are equally respectable. Many of the groups who participate in Standstill division are at just as high a level as those who participate in marching, but decide not to learn the extra drill required to enter the marching division. -

Most of this is directed at football specifically. Many of the other athletic teams are in the same pool as the band in the case of funding. It's happening in Round Rock. We almost had a director position cut entirely last year and we already have one alternating between two schools. The athletics aren't even the greatest here: Last year our football team won only two games while our Band won two big local contests and went to State. Truly, the schools need to look at the academic effects in reduced funding for extracurriculars. While I do not agree that cutting spending in football would actually benefit the district, I believe athletics is where the funding needs to be cut. Overall, the grades of those students in band are better than those of students in athletics. Since the school's main purpose is to have their students do well, why cut from the program with the best students? Plus, we barely get any funding from the district in the first place. A great majority of our funding comes from an incredible Band Boosters program. Also, the students do an great amount of the fundraising. The drumline alone never fails to raise over $10,000 in the beginning of the season at our major fundraiser. The football team does their minimal fundraising and then complains when they do not receive any of the proceeds from the concession stands, which are filled with food organized and supplied by the band boosters and filled with volunteers from the band. Rant over.

I'm on the tenor line of our drumline, and one of the things we do is just before we perform is alternate putting our hands into the middle of the circle saying "Oners, twoers, threers, fourers, fivers, sixers, seveners, eighters, niners," ending by lifting our hands and saying "TENORS!" Since there are only three of us, 1-6ers is with our hands and 7-9ers is with the plumes on our shakos -

It seems like it would make it fair, but only if bands of equal quality are on each day. Now the good bands would have no trouble making finals when performing on Friday, for example: LD Bell will undoubtedly make finals. As for bands like Round Rock, Reagan, Spring and Richland, it will be a bit more difficult. They have to really leave a big enough impact for the judge to watch a show on Saturday and say "Hmm, this is good, but not quite as good as that band I saw yesterday." It's much easier for a judge to say that about a band he saw just an hour previously than one he hasn't seen for a full 24. I'm not saying this policy should be implemented, because there is no way of telling whether the same amount of finals-worthy bands will appear on each day. It's one of the major fallacies in Region Band auditions: phase one consists of x amount of rooms from which a certain number of players are chosen. I know of specific examples of students who should have made the cut but didn't because of this style of judging. -

Well in a way that makes sense. It would give less of a disadvantage to those performing on Friday. Usually if a band performs early, they will score lower than they should compared to other bands. -

Poteet disqualified?????
drummerjoe replied to Thekingcmk's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Yes they are disqualified, and Forney will be competing at State in their place. They had an ineligible student running the sound board for their show. The director actually told UIL himself out of integrity.
