Props or no props. Money or no money, its up to the kids to perform their show. They are the ones that decide how good they are going to be not the directors or the drill writers or the parents or their sponsors. A band will be great if and only if they want to be great and they rehearse like they want to be great.

If Poteet is disqualified, who would you put in their spot for finals? -
2011 BOA San Antonio
Cookie_MonsterSR replied to MaverickBand15's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
The regional competitions that they hold would be where those bands who are not financially able to compete at a super-regional would compete in MFA events. So it's still for all its just at different levels of competition. -
Very true let me rephrase my statement then. Its hard to play the extremely technical passages at well over 180 BPM while doing the kind of drill that Mansfield does. Mansfield doesn't have the raw musical talent that say Bell or Marcus do so it's more difficult to achieve that level of musicality. However, there are high school bands that can do it (and bravo to them), not all of them are in Japan either. And while some high school marching bands are highly talented i don't think that comparing them to DCI groups is necessarily a good indication of their skill. Just my personal opinion.

I always think its great when schools from the same district cheer each other on at competitions or at football games, it really shows the class that those bands have. And especially when its two highly talented programs like Haltom and Richland, its impressive that you can still do that when both bands are competing for the top spots but only one gets it.

That's exactly why i think it should be discussed, to me how a show makes you feel and its level of appeal are more important than its technical proficiency either musically or visually, atleast to those not judging the bands. -
If you haven't ever looked up Trombone on Uncyclopedia you need to. It's highly accurate.

My head is spinning from all of the discussions over what a bubble versus a lock means. Who really cares? Look at how many times its been said that every single band that will be there is a great band. It's obvious that nobody is insulting anybody, it's simply a discussion of the bands that people have heard of because they have made a name for themselves. Bands like Mansfield, Plano East, or Legacy are still in the process of making a name for themselves and therefore will not be discussed as much as Bell,Marcus, or Bowie. That doesn't mean that they aren't as talented, just that not everybody has heard of them. That being said, who has the best GE this year? I've heard of some unbelievably high scores in that category this year. -

Seeing as it will be almost impossible to crack the top 3, who would you say is your favorite for an upset to take 4th? -

That's not necessarily true. Haltom got 3rd at TOC to Frisco Centennial and Mansfield. They look and sound great but there are just too many great bands to consider either Haltom or Richland a lock in finals. I haven't been able to see Richland this year but there are only 4 maybe 5 bands that you might be able to consider a certainty in finals. -

I feel that Mansfield will be the big surprise here and Haltom and Flower Mound will go home happy as well. As for Plano East judging off of last years performance at area they will be in very good position to crack the top 10 as well. As much as i hate to do it i have to agree with your assessment of Hebron this year although i hope i'm wrong. It would be nice to see Mansfield or Plano East in 6th or 7th -

Plano East,Mansfield,Haltom,Hebron,Legacy,Flowermound,Richland,CTJ, Ronald Reagan Which of these bands have the best chance at rounding out the top 10 spots? (I'm assuming Bowie,Marcus,Bell, Cedar Park and The Woodlands make the top 5) -

By different version i meant that they will start later in their show and not at the beginning and sometimes will cut out any fancy field exits they have and just hightail it off the field. (Just for clarification) And i would have to agree with your assessment of the Trinity band, i was very impressed with their show when i saw it. -

The time limit is only an issue at UIL competitions. That is why many bands have a "UIL-version" of their show that they perform just for those events. Although if somebody else has any new information feel free to correct me. -

I have a feeling both Mansfield and Haltom will make finals although either band is capable of placing anywhere from 17th to 5th easily, so its hard to say where they will end up. (I know there are only 14 spots in finals.) I would put Legacy on the bubble due to the fact that they sound very good but i don't know how well all of the standing still and dancing will play over with the judges considering the level of competition. I would also put Hebron on the bubble just because they are not having a very Hebron-like year for some reason, a lot can change in 2 weeks but i don't think that Hebron should be considered a certainty in finals by any means.
