  1. i loved newman smiths show. that trumpet thing was awesome.
  2. When i was in uta's marching band, our rehearsals were from 12-2 (something like that), and i remember that if you stood in one spot for too long your shoes would start to stick to the turf. some guy said the field temp was around 115-120, but i'm not sure if he was being serious or not. i got a nice tan tho.
  3. Bell's symphonic band was invited to the Midwest clinic in 1999, and they have been honor band finalists in the past.
  4. I played Haven Dances at UTA band camp several years ago. I'll see if I can find the recording.
  5. Based off the few minutes of rehearsal I saw earlier today, they're looking pretty good. Arlington, SA, and GN is on the calendar right now, but things can change.
  6. If that's true, then UTA is having a tough time keeping a marching band director. They've gone through atleast 4 in the past 5 years.
  7. "and, I dunno, when I hear a random piece written by Ticheli I can usually tell it's a Ticheli because it's just got that style to it" The same can be said about Whitacre. While I agree that he writes some incredibly beautiful pieces, a lot of his stuff all sounds the same to me, atleast with his slow, lyrical songs. Listen for about 5 seconds and you instantly know it's him. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. The way he writes is just unmistakable. I lean more towards Ticheli as a composer, mostly because I've played more of his pieces. And he always writes good sax parts, so being a sax player myself, he gets bonus points for that.
  8. October is a beautiful song, but An American Elegy has more of an emotional drive to it IMO. Listening to AE and knowing why it was written, gives it a little more meaning to me. I get chills when the off stage trumpet solo comes in, and I think it's cool that Frank added the schools alma mater into the song.
  9. Has anyone else been watching this series? It has been on the Discovery Channel for the past few nights and I'm absolutely blown away. Great camera work, and awesome in HiDef... http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/plane...anet-earth.html
  10. School is for fools. Does anyone want to buy a 2005 GN DVD set?
  11. Don't Know Much - Aaron Neville And it is driving me insane...
  12. Things that suck. 9 pages of term words for a psychology exam tomorrow...
  13. Mac. Especially now that they all come with the Intel chip. I have a G4 Powerbook, but just got a 24" iMac a little over a month ago. I have a few friends that have the new Macbook, and they all seem extremely happy. All Intel Macs can run Windows XP, and you can buy bundles that already have Windows installed. Having used PC's pretty much all my life, I can honestly say that there aren't too many major differences, but I do find Macs to be a little easier to use once you get used to them.
  14. I was on the Mike Portnoy forums and came across this. I know a lot of you guys are into Guitar Hero and thought you may like it. This guy took a few Dream Theater songs and turned them into Guitar Hero songs. These songs are ridiculously hard to play in real life, so I think this guy was just out to prove how hard they would be on Guitar Hero, since he obviously can't play them. I know bits and pieces of each song, so what the guy has done is pretty darn close to what it would be like playing it on a real guitar, IMO. ps. check out the guitar solo section at 3:17.
  15. I can't wait to see the price tag on that thing... Nevertheless, I want one.
  16. I'm happy for Boise State, since I'm not the biggest OU fan... Man, I wish I could have seen the last few minutes. I only got to see the first quarter. They were getting quite a lot of shots of both bands which was cool. It was funny to see OU's band when Boise St would make a big play. They looked absolutely disgusted.
  17. Taken from the TCU Band website: "TCU Band Weekend is designed to provide high school student musicians with an Honor Band clinic/concert experience in a beautiful university setting. Students can audition on their all-region etudes (or any other prepared material) so that it serves as a "dry-run audition" for the TMEA or ATSSB auditions. Participants also receive master class and all-state audition instruction from members of the TCU studio faculty. Finally, students get the opportunity to hear concerts by the TCU Wind Symphony, Jazz Ensemble, and other fine student performance ensembles. The educational opportunities presented by this Honor Band experience includes the chance to work with other band directors, to play in a section where everyone is in the same "league" as themselves, the exposure to new literature that challenges the student's sight reading and performance skills, and the opportunity to meet new friends and have a lot of fun. Also, students will have a chance to audition for a scholarship to TCU." http://www.band.tcu.edu/bandweekend.htm
  18. The one and only time I've fallen was at a rehearsal my sophmore year when I was at Trinity. This small group of saxes I was in had a fairly easy 8-5 backwards march in a diagonal for 8 or 12 counts and the tenor player behind me fell down and started rolling. Since I couldn't see him, I ended up tripping over him backwards and almost stabbed myself in the face with my mouthpiece. Those Selmer C stars are pretty sharp... The same year later in the season, we had an away game against Boswell. The field was incredibly slippery and muddy, and the same tenor player totally ate it on this fast forward march. He slipped and fell, and then got up really fast and tried to run to his next set. He slipped AGAIN and smacked himself in the head with his tenor and blacked out for like 5 or 6 seconds, so he was just sprawled out on the field like 4 steps infront of the sideline. This guy is pretty darn big too. 6'4'' and like 220+ pounds.
  19. When PS3 preorders first started up, there were some on ebay for $400,000 and a couple for well over $1million. Funny thing too, one of the million dollar ones had a couple bids.
  20. Each store (GameStop and EbGames) should be getting weekly shipments of both the Wii and PS3 all the through Christmas so just keep checking back.
  21. I work at the GameStop corporate office in Grapevine as a lead in the internet support and customer service department, and this video has become the talk of the whole office. I'm sure most of you know about the Sony PS3 launch last Friday, and how big a deal it was (to some ppl), and how hardcore video game fans are when it comes to the newest systems. Quite frankly after 3-4 months of hearing ppl whine and complain about wanting the PS3, getting cussed out and threatened over the phone and via email by countless ppl, I have little sympathy for the ones who won't get their system until well after Christmas. This video is for them... http://www.smashmyps3.com/ *Also, for ppl that may not know, PS3's range from $500 for the 20gb and $600 for the 60gb. Not sure which one this was.
