QuadraticBeats
Our school (Vista Ridge High School of Cedar Park- Leander ISD) has such a creative show name- Reflections. * What that title has to do with the theme of the show, none of us have any idea, and our show shirt has been messed up in a rather entertaining way- if you happen to see us (We're 4A, so we have a more limited realm of marching band), you might also happen to notice that our shirts indicate us to be the "VHRS Marching Band". But anyhow, the arrangement of marching music we're playing is... John Rutter's Gloria Open Thou Mine Eyes A closer using original music (I think) along the lines of the two previous pieces... plus a percussion feature a little bit into the beginning of it. 43 sets are in the first movement, about 15 sets are in the second movement, and I'm guessing 20-30ish for the closer. No offense to Key Poulan, but I'm enjoying the fact that we're not playing a pre-made marching show. That, and a new drill writer who actually knows what he's doing... we actually look like SOMETHING now! I have to feel sorry for our seniors, though. This is the first year where the organization has been ran with a semblance of... yes, organization. This is also the first year in which we have had actual marching techs, a sizable band of about 180ish (also a full battery, with the exception of two cymbal dropouts), and well-run rehearsals (in which the directors have not forgot water breaks for 40-60 minute intervals, that kind of thing- thanks to our drum majors!) and procedures. And they don't even get to go to State in the first year we aren't improvising everything. To those who have been ripped off... I salute you! *- I've heard that this is a ridiculously common show name used whenever the directors can't think of anything in particular to name the show. aaron067
Duncanville will be playing at Coppell this week and from what I hear Coppell will be playing Hindemith. I'll report on which pieces after the game. Coppell's show is straight Hindemith: ----------------------------------- Symphony in E-flat, Mvt. 1 Oboe Sonata Mathis der Mahler, Mvt. 1 Bassoon Sonata Mathis der Mahler, Mvt. 1/Mvt. 3 Watch for a totally different visual side of Coppell this year...While still not Churchill, Bell, or Reagan, they're using a new drill designer with almost half of their show set at a tempo of 180. They're not there yet, but it'll be interesting to see what they can do at BOA on the 8th.

aaron067
http://www.theremaining.org/ Looks like the continuation of Bell's show from last year. I could be wrong of course, but it seems to fall into line with the theme. The Ascension...The Remaining. It sounds interesting, at least, no matter who it is. Fortisimo
Alright, alright, here's the basic out line of what's public at this point; http://aisd.net/martinband/ Just go to the bottom of the page, there's some brief info about the show and a picture of our various logos and symbols for the show. Oh, and I just noticed this, but if you click on our drill designers name you'll see that one of our sets has a really big 'M' for Martin... I thought that was pretty cool- I don't think we've had anything self-referencing like that in our drill, at least not in the recent past. trumpetman1288
Your opener is the closer from my freshman year. Our closer was half of the the "Carnival" movement from La Fiesta, and then it changed into El Salon. El Salon is a fun song though :-D

Xenon
I just saw Coppell tonight. If it wasn't for the blinding white uniform I wouldn't have known that it was Coppell. The show wasn't loud. In fact, it was strangely quiet at times. I couldn't hear a lot of the quiet (Coppell quiet?!?!?!) sections very well over the crowd noise, though. Other than not being loud, also they looked completely different and yet eerily familiar. They have Youngblood drill this year, so no more of the constant onslaught of filled in shapes sliding over the field.

trumpetman1288
Man...Mr. Trumpet Master, I am starting to feeling a doubtful about some of the Valley bands for this year. The ones I project to do well don't seem to be excelling and contests aren't too far off. The only ones that I am not 100% sure about are Donna and Harlingen South. So here is my evaluation on SOME of area G so far from my various sources and personal thoughts: Laredo Nixon: Saw them at a game. Not looking too good. They didn't perform the music from their show at halftime. Supposedly they learned the music and drill separately and had not put the two together by the time we had played them. Edinburg North: Not looking so hot. In a stark contrast to last year, EN had a very poor sounding band. Although it may not be the new director's fault, it seems most reasonable, especially in comparison to EN the past decade or so. Edinburg: Not looking too bad for the time of year. Music wasn't bad, drill was moderately clean for this time of year, but marching technique has A LONG way to go. As I watched them, I found no defined marching technique. I think if they can fix that, then they be much better come October. Harlingen: Haven't seen them in person, but what I keep hearing is that they are aren't as great as in past years. I heard that they graduated a lot of people and so they are struggling to rebuild the band they had. It may be tough for them, but I think they will eventually pull through. Sharyland: Doing OK, but far from great. Second movement fell apart during the football game because of field distance crowd noise. Will definitely be improved next week, but a lot of work needs to be done. McAllen: I hear they are in a sort of middle ground right now. They aren't looking too bad, but things could be better. I am curious about Donna, Lopez, Laredo United, and Harlingen South as far as Area G goes. So, with things going the way they are right now, I'd like to revoke my predictions until further notice :-D A lot can change in 2-3 weeks, but let us hope things will turn around....especially if we want to end the 5A state finals drought for Area G. Trumpet Master
As far as Donna goes, it has been a pretty good year so far. We had the whole show down this past friday w/ the exception of props and "explosions". Over all the marching had been pretty good, the playing had been where it should be except our director wants so much more. The Weslaco crowd loved Fire of Eternal Glory. Weslaco was not that great though. Horrible marching, and only their first song down. Plus they were hissing like Snakes on a Plane when we marched by them. lol I to want to see Lopez and Harl. South. Good luck to the other Area G bands and if your in the neighborhood drop by and catch one of our practices, trumpetman1288
trumpetman1288
I think it would be interesting to go to one of your all's rehearsals, but I doubt I could ever get away from the rehearsals we have. As far as Sharyland goes, I know I said it was bad, but I really think it's because of a big lack of motivation and the "mid-september blues" that we always go through. In a sense, I am glad that our second movement did fall apart because the vibe that I get from a lot of people in the band is that we are "unbeatable," which is far from the truth. In truth, a lot of bands down here would probably slap us around right now. I'm kind of bummed out that the BOA down here was cancelled because there was a lot of interest for it, but no one wanted to sign up because of the price jump. I am even more bummed out because there are two USSBA contests down here on the same day, which is going to separate the competition into East zone and West zone, like it is for region marching contest(or Pigskin as we Valley people call it). I really hope we don't win that contest because it is going to give so many people an ego. Not to mention that a win down here doesn't mean a thing the next week...especially in a contest like BOA Houston, which we are going to the following week. Maybe things will get better, but you never know. OOOH, and curiosity...don't you all (Donna) and Weslaco have like one of the craziest rivalries? Like...people in the city of Donna hate Weslaco and vice versa? I heard a story about someone shooting a flaming arrow into the other's press box at one of the games, is that true?
