Canyon Ridge Congratulations to everyone, in particular Cedar Park HS and Canyon Ridge MS!! For those of you who don't know about Canyon Ridge MS, they are only in their 3rd year of existence out of Leander ISD after branching off from Cedar Park MS. The first year I heard them (back in my freshman year), I'll admit that I cringed throughout their entire program at the LISD Band Festival (just like everyone cringed for our first performance of our 35 member freshman marching band as well). Ms. Allison (assistant director at Cedar Park MS when I was there) has obviously done a great job building Canyon Ridge's program since then. I guess you could compare this to Hendrickson getting as far as they did with marching last season, a very honorable feat. Quote
Xukaniz Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 By the way, where did you find these results? Quote

Also, Kennemer MS from Duncanville is only in their 1st year of existence. Congratulations to both bands on an amazing feat. Quote

I think if varies...I believe Coppell High School has a good chance because at area, all five judges gave them first place. At this point in the game, its all about what the judges like personally such as interpetation of the music and the style in which the pieces are played/presented. So really, i truly believe anyone can win it. When I see scores like Coppell though, that tells me that the judges really like their interpetation, etc. Everyone, though, should be really proud about their bands accomplishments regardless of advancement or not...to be a part of something like music, it's almost magical, words cannot explain. That should be (atleast to me) the most importart thing about Honor Band submission and any other contest...it's the journey and memories, not the results! Good luck to everyone!! Quote

pianomusicman89 Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 It seems the rest of my message is getting over looked...all I'm saying is that anyone has the posibility of winning. I was using Coppell as some what of an example. My point is that you shouldn't worry about who wins because it all depends on the judges and their mood and interpetation of the music they're going to hear (ex. a judge might think that your band has the best recording of Music for Prague, but another judge might not like how the piece is styled, or played). One person's view is going to be different from anothers. So it's hard for anyone to judge or make the assumption of who is going to win the Honor Band contest. Music is extremly subjective. You know? I'm not trying to put down anyone. I'm really impressed and inspired by all the hard work and effort put into these recordings by everyone. So when July rolls around, all we can do is watch and hope that the judges might favor particular interpetations over others. Quote

Not to take anything away from Coppell though, I think he meant that sweeping the Area contest is somewhat indicative of how a band might do at State, but that's not to say that earning all five 1st place votes at Region isn't an achievement as well, especially when the competition is so stiff. As was already said, however, the State panel could lean entirely toward Langham Creek's style, entirely toward Coppell's style, or it could be split. It's really far more subjective than it is objective, so there's unfortunately no way to be certain how it will turn out. Quote
Xukaniz Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 I know two years ago Lee beat us at Region, but we beat them at Area and State, so I agree with what has been. Its all about the judge's taste. Quote
Brian Ngo Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 I know what you guys were saying. I was just stating that about LC Quote
lilmike8806 Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 Hey so once we get all of the State finalist from each area why don't we make a prediction for this. It'll be fun to see everybody's opinions. Can somebody please do it (once the canidates are all announced)? Quote
smusic Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 Have heard Coppell, Langham Creek, Plano East, and Marcus. Out of those four bands, I have to give my vote to Coppell. They sounded amazing this year. Every section sounds mature and the clarinets in Aegean are amazing, especially the clarinet solo. Also the brass is very crisp and articulate. Duncanville swept the contest last time around with Bryd and DHS winning, and I hink Coppell will do it this time around with Coppell North winning as well. Just my two cents. Good luck to all the bands and I'm proud to be in the great state of Texas because there are soooo many great bands in the Lone Star State! Quote

Xenon Posted June 28, 2006 Author Posted June 28, 2006 Yes, and I feel that had y'all played something else y'all might have had a better chance of advancing. By luck of the draw y'all went right after Coppell who's Aegean was amazing. Having a direct comparison like that is never a good thing for the group that didn't play it quite as well. Quote
pianomusicman89 Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 Ok, so now, I have to hear this Aegan song...it sounds amazing just from you guys talking about it (does anyone think they can get a recording?) Quote
Xukaniz Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 I may be able to hook you up in the not-too-distant future of the Midland High School band playing it. We played it last year. Quote
