euro_euph06 Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 I was browsing through my daily checks and I found this on the Cadets website. I know its going to cause controversy no matter what I say. But I personally am going to wait until DCI SA to give my opinions on the Cadets and even all the other corps. For all I know--my beloved Blue Devils and Bluecoats could have shows that I dislike---most likely not--but it could happen. Enjoy... Feedback to the Cadets 2006 Production In our efforts to bring you all of the news about the Cadets in a "fair and balanced" approach, we give you these two e-mails from recent Cadets' appearances in Birmingham and Pwder Springs, GA. We hope you'll take away your own impressions of the show this year and send them to us at hopkins@yea.org, but for now, here's what two spectators had to say. "I just wanted to voice my opinion to someone about what I think Drum Corps is all about. I've been a fan of Drum Corps ever since 1979 and Love it with all my heart. This past Thursday I attended the show at Birmingham Al. And loved it, well most of it. I speak for myself and many other that were around me a little frustrated with the addition of singing in a Drum corps show. The Cadets, one of my favorite groups, had a young lady singing on one song, and 4 others dressed up in strange costumes running around talking at different points. Now I know different strokes for different folks, but the thing that bothered me the most was at the end of the song when the horns are building big, we had to strain to hear 100 horn playing with all their might, because the singer was so loud in the sound system. People go to drum corps because there is no where else to hear the great level of playing ability and choreography all put together. If I want to hear someone sing, I'll watch American Idol. My sincere hope is that Drum & Bugle Corps will stay Drum & Bugle Corps. It is AWESOME!!!!" David Young "I am writing to you today as a result of attending The Atlanta Brass Classic two nights ago in Powder Springs, GA. Last year was the first time that I was aware of the Show. Having the show only 3 miles from my home is a blessing that I never thought I would enjoy and seeing The Cadets there and knowing later that they once again won DCI, was the icing on the cake. Sadly, for me at least it would seem, I am a Drum Corps Traditionalist! But, like me, at the close of the opening sequence with the "SINGING AND ELECTRONICS" the entire audience was so awed and seemingly appalled.......the silence was deafening! I felt so sorry for the girl singing...yet glad...hoping that maybe this would be the nail in the coffin of such outlandish JUNK, I pray that common sense would prevail and the singing, pink tables, 10,000 fru fru panels and the blue fru-fru backing on what once used to be glorious Cadet Uniforms would all be scrapped and the junk burned. To be more constructive from a General Effects viewpoint...The entire Hornline and Drumline are masked by all the contrasting colors, the dancers uniforms, the overused worn pink colors on the tables and the distracting large panels in the background. The show honestly would be great on Broadway. But,to me, and apparently to the majority of the people in the stands, it has no place in competitive Drums Corps. I found myself suddenly pulling for Phantom Regiment, Boston Crusaders or even the Corps-Vets to win Friday night ( and they only had half a show ready to perform). Even the lesser Corps were, at least, all Drum Corps. I hope that you will accept this critique will the good intention that it is meant and for the good of Drum and Bugle Corps." Sincerely yours: Duane Baay Quote
Fortisimo Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 Ohhhhhhh burn. Lmao, yeah, I dunno. I don't think I can really form an opinion on this specific show until I see it, but hey, I am open to new stuff. Although, in a similar vein, I do sometimes think that such theatrics in the BOA circuit are often excessively used and often at such extents they take away from the show. Props and gimmicks are no replacement for good old fashioned 0wnage, musically and visually. It's as the second writer said, "The show honestly would be great on Broadway"- and I hate nearly all broadway shows (that aren't funny ones and lets face it, whjo wants to work all summer and fall to have a marching show that is literally a joke?). Lmao, but yeah, a little bit as an embellishment can be good.... like I said, I'll just have to see. Quote
mnkyman Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 ya - i hope this draws the line for these GE shananogens(sp?) there retarded..although it bothers me that its in boa..i live with it...but dci is where i draw the line Quote
zackee Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 The first ladie's opinion is exactly what I thought. You don't need a singer on the field. Quote

Mculbert07 Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 Is VK 92 the one that was in the first Classic Countdown? Quote
LdTrumpetWailer Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 good ol' VK I miss the'. Godzilla will keep dancing for me in my mind. I have to agree with the first letter for about 75% of it. I don't like the singer but seriously, a singer can greatly boost the cool factor of a drum corp show. However, this one made me gag. Nobody hate on me like many of the other forms cause that's why I don't post often. Quote

Nobody hate on me like many of the other forms cause that's why I don't post often. I don't really see how a singer can enhance a show, from a "coolness" standpoint. I'd much rather hear a hornline play the song than hear a singer sing it. see also: Crown 2004. After the singing quintet (or maybe quartet), and the horn entrance afterwards... major goosebump moment for the hornline. I didn't care for the singing (although I liked it better than Cadets 06.) -C Quote
LdTrumpetWailer Posted December 21, 2006 Posted December 21, 2006 very true. I was just saying that now and days the instrument is becoming a lost craft so to speak. And I was pointing that at the use of singers for an alternative. Still, I do love a power house hornline myself. just to make my point nothing like madison scouts 95'. sorry if I was dumb lol Quote
CHS King Mello Posted December 21, 2006 Posted December 21, 2006 the instrument isn't becoming the lost craft. Good arrangements of music is becoming a lost craft. -C Quote
LdTrumpetWailer Posted December 21, 2006 Posted December 21, 2006 then how do you explain all the music programs being cut across the nation? and the music writing is dieing to some degree. so I'm not going to fight you anymore. Quote
CHS King Mello Posted December 21, 2006 Posted December 21, 2006 I wasn't arguing. I just disagree with musical instruments becoming a dieing craft. in the South Carolina equivilent of this forum, we discussed the fact that drum corps don't satisfy a lot of people musically as they used to. That's not because people don't know how to play their instruments, it's because music isn't arranged the same way it used to be. and music programs being cut across the nation isn't because kids don't want to learn, it's because schools recieve poor funding from governments who'd rather pay for the lottery than a decent education. again, no hard feelings... forums are meant for discussion. -C Quote
LdTrumpetWailer Posted December 21, 2006 Posted December 21, 2006 oh cool and I'm sorry too. but I guess I mean the craft thing is decided by who believes in it. I think the kids part is true as you said but the Gov and adult types are the ones who fund it and make it, so that's y. If they don't fund it is would seem to be dyin'. So I know what you mean but I just think music programs should operate without Gov funds b/c they are that special. And we are that cool. maybe Whitacre will save us all. Quote

Just because you don't like the way the Cadets ballad was arranged doesn't mean its a bad arrangement. I thought it was amazing Quote
