x04ty29er Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 Does anybody have any kind of reeds they would suggest and a retailer(clarinet)? I seem to be having a problem with more and more bad reeds per box (bad==soft or crack, or just plain messed up). I currently play on V12 vandoren strength 4. An ysuggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Quote
ClaireAnnette07 Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 Chunk the V12's...Rue Lepics are much better. Yeah, it bites that the Rue Lepics are more expensive, but they last soo much longer. I use most (if not ALL) of the reeds in the Rue Lepic box and they give you a nicer sound. Quote
TRtrumpet Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 I have this same problem with my alto sax reeds. I buy Vandoren but alot of the reeds end up being to soft. Any saxes have any suggestions? Quote
x04ty29er Posted July 21, 2006 Author Posted July 21, 2006 Any idea on a cost range in comparison to V12's? Quote

Any saxes have any suggestions? The Professor of Saxophone @ Baylor recommended me this on alto sax Vandoren Regular size 3.5 Vandoren V12 Size 4 I dunno if it helps Jacob, but this might help also, buy the Vandoren box with the reeds already inspected...but it costs 36 dollars Quote
TRtrumpet Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 Thanks, I didn't know you could buy already inspected reeds. Quote

Besides, you can turn any reed into a decent reed anyways. Buy some Vandoren 3.5 and a decent reed knife. Ask your private lessons teacher about curing and preparing reeds. He/She should know all about it. Quote
trumpetman1288 Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 It's great to be a brass player! No reeds, no worries. Not to mention that water damage isn't even a concern if it rains. Quote

The worst part is that it ALWAYS sticks in the middle of solo or key entrance. The rest of you brass players know what I'm talking about... Quote
trumpetman1288 Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 Well, since this is a "reed problem" thread, I should share what I know. Clarinets, some of you may grumble at the thought of this, but you should try the Legere (sp?) plastic reeds. Some of our honors clarinets play on them, and being the person that I am with the EXTREMELY picky ear, I can't tell the that they are using a plastic reed instead of a wooden one. I believe it's about $20 a reed, but they last a really long time. With those, it just kind of comes down to preference. I've played clarinet a few times both with a wooden reed and a plastic reed, and the plastic reed doesn't quite feel right to me as a wooden reed does, but it makes a better sound for me. Just a thought. And yes...inspected reeds are definitely a good idea. I think the money spent knowing that everyone of your reeds works is far better than taking a gamble and hoping that you get at least half a box of good reeds. Saxes...sorry, don't know much about them as far as reeds. And that's about all I know. If it were about trumpet, man, I could really help you out Quote
TRtrumpet Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 I have a legere plastic reed for my sax. I dont personally like it, but our assistant band director said that at her old band (where she used to work) the head director made all their woodwinds try out for all region and stuff like that on legere reeds and had great success with them. Claritone Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Plastic reeds are really good for marching. They're LOUD and dont break easily. Quote

trumpetman1288 Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Actually...I can testify that plastic mouthpieces DO infact break. Quote
TRtrumpet Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Our assistant director wants all our woodwinds to get legere plastic reeds for marching season. Quote

trumpetman1288 Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 No...it just sorta happened...by accident of course. Quote
whitewing09 Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 suree well i play tuba or sousa which ever is more politically correct in marching season. anywho we sit way the eff up there and for sum reason we drop our mouthpieces and the crappy schools around here have open bleaches anywho so our mouth pieces fall all the way down there. ya i really need a new mouth piece after last year marching season but my friend got a plastic one and it would fall and it never broke Quote
bandfamily Posted August 28, 2006 Posted August 28, 2006 if you want cheap "inspected reeds" just buy 'em from your bds. you can buy reeds individually and inspect them yourself. (at least at my school) Quote
