Xukaniz Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 GO CAVIES! And Cadets are still in 5th. Blue Devils in 2nd...Bluecoats and Phantom moving up in the world. How can this year get any better? Quote
Aegis Fang Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 that Capital Regiment show was funny as heck though =p Quote
artishard Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 i like cap reg's show this year...really cool. dci SA was awesome this year, no doubt about it. Quote
euro_euph06 Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 Here are my thoughts about the Top 7 from the Finals show: 7 Carolina Crown 85.000 While this show was a departure from previous years, it still was entertaining. There were a few partially dirty runs from the trumpets in the closer, but they should be clean by Finals. Overall, a very good show. 6 Santa Clara Vanguard 85.225 VANNGUUAARRDDD!!! I did not miss the yell--did you? In a previous thread, someone asked about the person walking around the field. I figured out it is apart of the theme "moto perputo" or perputual motion. Therefore they never stop moving. Anyways, their drill is fricking amazing--very complex, and for the most part clean. I wonder if them and Crown can catch the Cadets. 5 The Cadets 88.300 I told myself entering the show that I would keep an open mind--and I did. Did you see the drumline. I can say only one word--darn. They were smoking. The singer, while good, did not seem to fit with the show. The Cadets show is very demanding visually for all aspects (minus Front Ensemble). Overall, I liked the show. 4 Bluecoats 89.050 Can you say "WOW"? I definitely can. This corps has made stides towards the top since their '04 show "Mood Swings." where they broke into the top 6. Their drumline is the main reason for that too. The baritone line was smoking their parts too. Props to the tenor that recovered from their fall. 3 Phantom Regiment 90.150 Was it just me. or was this show mainly about playing loud. To me, there was hardly any finesse outside of Ave Maria. Plus they did a crap load of rim shots. But hey they played well and it was entertaining. Dont think they should have broke the 90s, but whatever. 2 Blue Devils 92.000 OMG!!! Their hornline was amazing (minus the ending where there was some balance issues--probably where the .55 difference came from). Their guard was awesome, as was the drumline. Too bad they are no longer undefeated . 1 The Cavaliers 92.550 GE...GE...GE....wait.....can you say GE? I loved their theme of machines. They had a nice visual package and the robotic motions were to die for. Musically, I was a little sketchy about, but what can you expect for a corps that has not placed 1st or 2nd for the decade? Pure dominations Overall, I had a fun time. I was nice seeing the afternoon show too--the reason the corps are getting better is that the bottom is just getting better. I think that the Colts, Crossmen, and Blue Stars all have a chance of making Finals. My only beef with the shows were that there were hardly any major swing sections and high squealers, and the pits. Almost every single pit was amped. But hey, cant wait until next year (hopefully I will be marching it) Quote
bluebellbrass07 Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 QUOTE (Xukaniz @ Jul 23 2006, 05:18 AM) How can this year get any better? Blue Devils taking back first. And Phantom beating cavies. So our seats werent the greatest, but my main complaint was the 3 rows of freaking kids in front of us. They would not shut up! But I more than got back at them by scaring the crap out of all of them during the Vanguard yell. What was with all the bad-mouthing of the Cadets? I loved their show. Quote
G'townPIT Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 So was it last year's DCI SA competition where the Cadets overtook the Cavaliers and continued to Finals? Maybe the same thing here, except it's the Cavies overtaking! Quote
Disappearer221 Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 "My only beef with the shows were that there were hardly any major swing sections and high squealers, and the pits. Almost every single pit was amped. " I dont understand what you have against an amplified front ensemble. Amplification allows the instrument to be played how it is meant to be played, with a dark, characteristic sound quality instead of the bright, harsh overplaying that had to be done to cut through a horn line unamplified. Also, the best front ensembles have become much less xylophone heavy due to amplification. Again, adding to the beautiful, balanced tone quality that the best pits are putting out now with amps. Xylophone is now being used more as a special effect. So coming from a former DCI front ensemble member, and current front ensemble teacher, amps are a god-send that allow us to play beautifully instead of harshly. Quote
Claritone Posted July 23, 2006 Author Posted July 23, 2006 I was really impressed by vanguards show. The drill was crazy. Quote
Keyboard_Countessa Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 Let's see what I can remember without my notes (yes, I took notes during the performances, I'm that much of a band nerd ). The Blue Knight's show intrigued me because it was so pit-heavy. The program said that their show was based on a piano concerto and the pit acts as the piano, but seeing and hearing them made it really come alive. It's a different way of incorporating the pit, and I liked seeing a change from the usual. While I have nothing against the Cadets, I just thought their show was way too busy. How can I observe the pit's technique when there's guard girls jumping off of tables?? Santa Clara Vanguard failed to disappoint . Having seen their show in Houston already, I was better able to appreciate their visual themes and still enjoy the music. I will admit that I am biased when it comes to the Blue Devils, so I was more critical of their show. The thing that bugged me most was the lack of dynamic variation in the pit; they were either loud or not loud with not much in between. Also, I thought the marimbas tended to dominate the sound. The Cavaliers ROCK MY SOCKS OFF!! Everything about their show expressed their theme so well, even just coming onto the field and the stuff between movements. And though I will love the Cavies until the day I die, I was shocked and awed by the Bluecoats. It seemed like every time I looked at the pit they were playing another lightning-fast run, and is has firmly cemented my fandom of the Bluecoats. And getting to "bloo" for the first time was fun. Quote
TRtrumpet Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Lol when people where saying the "Bloooo" I was like WFT?? I thought they were booing them... I was like dang they were even bad?? Lol. But anyways, I LOVED the Cavies show. The music and that robot theme was great. I also really enjoyed SCV's show (as usual). Quote
Claritone Posted July 24, 2006 Author Posted July 24, 2006 Did anyone else notice that phantom got first in percussion? The full results are Here Quote
Fortisimo Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Ahhh, Cavies are back on top, and Phantom is back in front of the Bluecoats... all is right with the world once again. Lol, but seriously. The Cadets show was, in my opinion, a farce. I actually enjoyed the singing in the ballad- I htought it really worked very well. What i didn't like, however, was the fact that they had so much time of people just dancing around and a long perc feature- they seemed much like a wannabe BOA band, which I personally do not like, especially coming from a corp. Anyways, the show overall was in my opinion, a bust, and its no wonder they have dropped so far in the rankings. The cavliers had a very interesting show, lots of cool interactions and whatnot- a few gimmicks, but not way overplayed like the Cadets. They used them with finesse, and they added to, not took away from the show. Their marching was astoundingly good overall as well. They were significantly cleaner than any of the other corps. The Blue Devils were cool- not anything especially amazing from them, they had a nice balance of marching and music well, but like I said, nothing spectacular. Although Phantom didn't execute as well as those that beat it (in my opinion, it got the place it deserved) I loved the show. Their music was very well arranged and was very intense and didn't bog down like many shows seem to in the middle. Plus, their low brass and mellophone lines seemed especially impressive to me. The horn rips in the opener were magnificent. Their drill was more interesting than some, but not as much as others, and their marching performance was mediocre- not bad, not great though. I thought Madison should've overtaken the Blue Knights- but hey, that's just me. Boston Crusaders... not much to say about them except for the fact that they have almost exactly the same uniforms as us. Carolina Crown was better than I expected.... Glassmen had an interesting show I thought. (If I remember right, they are the ones who march for a few measures without playing anything. I tohught this was particularly effective) SCV.... that guy walking around the field was hilarious and very distracting really. Can you imagine if you did all that work and tried out and got into SCV only to find out that while everyone else is doing some awesome drill and whatnot, all you're going to do is walk around the field? Lmao, he got jipped. Anyways.... Capital Regiment was very funny too. Their show was quite entertaining. Oh, and Spirit was a lot cooler than I thought it was going to be. (edited) But yeah, Phantom's show was my favorite (at least the music was). Quote

G'townPIT Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Quote Lmao. What was the point of that guy anyway? I thought this had already been discussed? Isn't he just injured? Makes sense to me. Quote
actualgirltrombone Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Did anyone else get there really early and see some of the Division 2 corps? I personally thought Southwind had a really cool effect with the different colored uniforms and the yin-yang thing. Their playing and drill wasn't all there, but it was a cool effect, I gotta say. CAVIES WAS SO CLEAN!!!! I was amazed. I almost want them to win... but I like Phantom's show better. Quote

Claritone Posted July 24, 2006 Author Posted July 24, 2006 Since SCV's show is all about motion....something has to be moving at ALL times. The person that marched the perimeter of the field started in the lower right corner of the field and ended the show (right before the tag ending) where he started off. So basically, he started in the lower right corner, end up on the upper right corner at the end of Movement I, end up on the upper left corner at the end of the Movement II and so on. During the tag ending, he marched on to the field and crashes into the cymbal "V". - mbui Quote

The only corps to attend SA that was not a Div 1 corps is the Div 3 corps named Revolution. This was their home show. Quote
TRtrumpet Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 I really wanted to see Revoloution's show seeing as how im planning to try out for them this year, but I didn't get there early enough. Quote

The Day before DCI SA *friday*, I went to Texas State to see them rehearse, and the guy walking around the field did have a brace on his knee... so he very well could be injured. And I found out that it's a lot more fun to sit at the top of the first tier right on the fifty, that way you can get the full effect of the sound AND see the forms. Friday's performance was more fun for me because I could hear it a lot louder, and I actually saw the forms... first tier sucks... except for the very top right on the fifty =p Quote
Claritone Posted July 24, 2006 Author Posted July 24, 2006 Thats really cool that while hes injured, hes still able to be a part of the show in an insteresting and unique way. Quote
G'townPIT Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 yeah that's the only part that I don't get, is that if he's injured, how come he marches through the cymbals at the end. And if I remember correctly, he was marching quickly on his way to the cymbal V. Quote
