andrewband07 Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 Does anyone have any ideas of how to help a student who struggles with tempo and counting sincethe beginning and no section leaders or me and the other drum major from our school are are able to find a solution with this freshman. Thanks for the help. Quote
trumpetman1288 Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 You could try walking in time...just to give the feel of being in step. Then slow down the counting. Make it like a totally normal walking speed, but make sure he/she stays in time. Make sure this person also is familiar with what counts each foot hits the ground. If the student understands this concept yet still has trouble, try breaking down things with the student at an easier level. If he/she is experiencing phasing with marching, then just help them push their feet. Motivate them...not 100% sure what kind of problem you are experiencing, but let me know a little more detailed so I can help a little more. Hope this helps! Quote
titancoaster Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 by the numbers at like 60-70 worked for me when a girl always rushed now she stays in step Quote
Aegis Fang Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 start easy and add things in. 1) clap a rhythm. 2) have him clap in time with you 3) have him walk in place in time with the clapping 4) have him jump in the air in time with the clapping 5) come up with something else requiring that he keeps in tempo be creative, make sure there's something he can look back on to remember what he's supposed to do. whitewing09 Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 why dont you use a metronome or whatever?? thats what we use it makes it so easy to learn how to stay in step. hahah i remember being a freshman me - 1 2 3 4 5 6 stab halt di - you forgot the push!!! me steps on push di - your not suppose to step on the push! make sure he counts right Quote
MartinHorn Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Slowing it down, like trumpetman said, does help and have them sub divide ex. and 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 etc. Quote
SaxoAK Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 my BD always says to play to your feet and match your feet to the tempo, rather than step to the music you're playing. if you think about it this way, it seems to work a bit better Quote
