TRtrumpet Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 This year our band directors decided to seperate the boys and girls by putting them on sepperate busses for when we go to games, trips, contest, etc. We've never done anything TERRIBLE on our busses... well nothing bad enough for them to seperate us, but they did. Does your band do this? Our assistant director said it was "standard practice" in almost every band now so I'm just wondering. Quote
supermanuel Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 we sign up for busses however we please...seniors one day, juniors the next etc. we get to pick but once it's on it's final, unless you find someone to switch with to answer your question, we have co-ed busses Quote
Band-Chica Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 Our band directors assign us to a bus. There are senior, junior, sophmore, and freshmen busses. If one bus (except the last one) isn't completely filled, then people get moved onto the next bus depending on how much room is left. Last year, the bus I was on wasn't filled up enough, so we had a lot of freshmen on our bus. Quote

Xenon Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 Y'all have enough people to have more than one bus? Quote

Hawkeye Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Standard practice? Not too many schools do it where I am (none that I can think of, which is a lot), co-ed busses for here. Quote

Danpod Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Most bands have boys and girls integrated on the buses with the exception of the colorguard. The colorguard should get their own bus because they almost always have to change on board. I'd hate for some Freshman to get his mind warped while he watches 40 guard girls strip in front of him!!!! Were like 40 people we don't need 2 busses plus it's boring without the girls. Quote

Oh, and we had the occasional "hand check"...weird... lol Quote

I love it when they try to make up reasons for stuff they shouldn't be able to get away with legally... bring up the threat of a lawsuit and their case crumples. Anyhow, my pity goes out for you guys... every band does their own thing, I guess, but it's still a pain when band directors think they can get away with whatever they feel like should be a policy. Or worse yet, school administration... or further up... politicians slapping around educational rules for credos and usually with worthless means and/or ends (yes, totally unrelated to separate buses for male/female)... For me, I find their audacity more offensive than any codes and policies that they claim to have the power to enforce. But admittedly, there must be rules of some sort when dealing with masses of people. Speaking of which, could anybody here confirm something I heard about school starting after Labor Day next year? It could just be a district thing, but I heard that something along those lines had been passed into law to go into effect next year. If it's true, it might be one of the few better decisions that has been made regarding schools recently (that I know of). It's nice to not have that heat, but it won't be nice if I can't march corps because of school in June. Quote
Aegis Fang Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 well if you think you have it bad... *nothing to do with busses, but still bad nonetheless* my old director is under the impression that his band is too immature handle the CAP to the little bottles of water in the stands, so the parents take them off before they hand the band their water... how retarded is that? And I swear to god I'm not lying Quote

If it's true, it might be one of the few better decisions that has been made regarding schools recently (that I know of). The law (starting with the 2007-2008 school year) is that all schools in Texas must start exactly on the 4th Monday in August (no exceptions anymore), which for next year would be August 27th. Aegis Fang said: hand check? That must've been before I got to clemens... what do you mean? Generally, that rule is that all hands must be visible at all times and that chaperones walk by every once in a while to make sure. This way there's nothing going on under a blanket. Quote

TRtrumpet Posted August 24, 2006 Author Posted August 24, 2006 We never have anykind of handchecks or anything like that, but even if they did as soon as you saw a chaperone coming you would stop doing whatever you were doing under the blanket and pick your hands up so... I don't think that would work. Quote
MartinHorn Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Sounds kinda dumb to me, but I guess yall can't keep your hands to yourselves. Quote
Fortisimo Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 I think we're talking about more than hands here, but Ok... lol. We do our buses by section, so a lot of times they are close to segregated gender-wise, but they aren't purposely setup that way, it just works out as such. Oh, and the colorguard thing? They share a bus with the loading crew which is comprised entirely of freshmen boys, plus one upper classman "equipment Nazi", so I guess mind-warping is not a big concern of ours. I don't think I ever witnessed such travesties (our color-guard, no offense, is not exactly a group I would enjoy seeing such a show of) while I was in loading crew, though. I almost entirely sure they always change before-hand. Quote
