I much prefer the judging system and ideals embodied within UIL so I voted for that.

However, I really think that UIL needs to stop acting like a state organization and start incorporating some of the pagentry of BOA. The number one example of this is that Area and State Finals need to have full retreats. And number two, they need to get rid of the stone cold announcements.

Both have their pro's and con's. I would love for BOA and UIL to adapt the 40/30/30 sheets. 40% General Effect, 30% Music Performance & 30% Visual Performance.

But if I had to choose...it would be Bands of America.

I'd even pick the Indiana (ISSMA), South Carolina (SCBDA) and Michigan (MCBA) state circuits over UIL. I just love how their marching band competitions are being operated.

I like BOA better... because UIL is a joke for the most part. If you can march in step and play with dynamics, you can get a superior rating.

BOA is FAR more cutthroat, more intense, and a much more difficult scoring system. And focuses more on the show as a whole, not the individuals in the show.

I've said it before, but I will say it again, especially since there is a topic dedicated to this now :D

UIL helps decide who the best program is. UIL at the regional level is a joke, I agree. Just about any band can get a first division. At area and state, however, it becomes a real contest. It becomes about who is the most uniform, who is the most musical, and who has the best marching technique. BOA judges that, yes, but they seem to be distracted by how flashy a show can be. I admit that I do find a number of BOA shows more entertaining than UIL shows, but UIL is out to go find the best band in the state, not the most entertaining. I mean, same goes for UIL honor band. If you want to become the honor band of the state, you don't go play an entertaining jazz chart, you play the most difficult piece you can find and make it musical. Just my two cents.

And yes, UIL would be SOOOO much better with a retreat. We have retreats down here at our regional contest. We call it "Pigskin" because about 60 or so years ago, Pigskin started as a marching festival to raise money for football teams. It has evolved into our regional contest and continuing tradition, we play the fight song as we pass the audience and then we go and form ranks on the field.

I have mixed feelings on this.

firstly, UIL isnt a joke, marching band is about being clean and its not individually its as a hole people dont march on-step to theyre own beat, they follow with the bands beat and being in the drill presise (sp) playing together like really really together. its not idividual and i dont think that UIL is judging individuals they judge how clean and professional (lack of a better phrase) the show is.(sorry i suck at english)

secondly, boa does have really good kick butt shows theyre really entertaining but its not entertaining if your shows dirty full of people out of drills and what not. Ive learned that just cuz a shows entertaining doesnt give an excuse to it being dirty.

pretty much if you can be like bell and kick @$$ at both then your set

Im glad texas has both i think its really good to have different forms of judging and all that

too me BOA seems alittle more bias i mean i dont know but it does
