Well everyone, with last night being the first competition of the season, I wanted to post my thoughts. Everyone was amazing and I can already tell it’s gonna be a great season!

Blue Stars- What A Sound! I can feel the energy from start to finish, and it shows. Ballad was definitely my favorite part, and Ik it will be a fan favorite all year. Drill was pretty rough, but that’s to be expected. I’m loving this show so much thought and can’t wait to see it grow.

Phantom- I mean what is there not to love about this show. The Moonlight Sonata is done perfectly, I mean that opening and ending impacts were just so good. Love the drill, and the Fly or Die section, cmon now, those soloist are soooo good! Will be one loved by the crowd all season!

Colts- while the theme isn’t to big on be, they sounded sooo good! Some really nice brass moments, great soloist, I just worry that GE will be a killer for them, but they were still close to BS/Cavies score wise, so I’m not worried about them just yet. It’s a very enjoyable show, just not my favorite compared to 22/23.

Cavaliers- I’m really liking where they are going with this show! The uniform changes is a nice touch of GE to go “Beneath the Armor”. Love the dark start and then ends with more light music. Very excited to see this one grow.

Boston- What an opening show from them! I will admit, there are some parts that will take time to grow on me, but overall I’m liking the show! Guard was soooo good, Love the ending how they “glitch” back to music from the start, opening statement is wow and I love their ballad. Hoping it gets to the level of 22/23 for me personally, and Ik it will!

This was a great show to start us off and I can’t wait for the two shows on Friday!!! Also, Northern Lights were great! Love the firebird and plants, some great stuff from that group!

I agree with most of this honestly, this season is looking to be a major step up from the past 2 years, ESPECIALLY in difficulty

Kind of surprising to see Cavies get 2nd in percussion, but its so early that can easily be a non factor in a week, otherwise I think Phantom could cause a serious ruckus come finals

wasn't digging most of them tbh, w/ the caveat that i watched it on multi for free on YT. saw Phantom and BAC on high. we'll see how they all look and sound later in the season.

didnt care for a lot of the music. "too much" sums it up for me. too many notes for the sake of notes. too many pieces crammed into the production, for the sake of getting that checkmark next to "variety" on the sheets. which leads to little coherence and few through lines in the music. but then this is all stuff that has been going on for yeeears now. imo it feels very catered to teenagers (now why would that be? lol) who often think that the height of musical excellence is playing a lot of quick, repetitive, scalar, sixteenth-note figures. don't get me wrong, there are lotsa old farts wetting themselves over those moments too, the ones who cry "content!!!!" like some Greek ululation as they storm into battle. buuut what about musical expression?

the Bostonian (but actually probably mostly Texan) babies over at BAC were on a different level. great playing, some great music to cling onto, nice visuals, drill kinda BOAish in its more direct simplicity, maybe a little hard to read at times w/ the costuming, kinda like when a guard fades into the field, but this time it's the winds.  maaaybe that's an intentional glitch lol. guard is stunningly good, like watching pride of cincinnati but on the field, they're even dressed similarly to the adios show. better blending of the equipment w/ mvmnt than usual. lovely ballad, actually didn't care for it when i first heard it, compared it negatively to FloMo's, seemed excessivelyyy.... melismatic? lol, like Mariah-ish. but i like it now. not sure overall the show is strong enough to win but we'll see what the two Blues and Crown bring.

Phantom opened and ended faaabulously w/ the Beethoven. stuff in the middle, a little less fabulous. stuff just kinda dragged. trapped in your own mind, something like that, for the theme.

actually one of my biggest fears is that the gulf in quality b/w the tippity top and the rest is widening. esp after watching cavies. (nice effort, but they seemed reeeally out of their depth. also prob the most confused Saucedo arrangement ive ever heard. like, what happened?!! lol) w/ all the financial troubles + how expensive it is to participate, the products really should be higher quality. which would lead to better recruiting methinks. kinda worrisome but this is also based on entirely subjective judgements lots will disagree with.

From placement top to bottom:

Boston: Yes.  Everything except some of the pacing and arranging(closer could use tweaking and I’m sure it will get that later on as is the norm) is great.  What a visual opportunity in the drumbreak with the hoops.  Wow.  Ballad is great, and as I predicted it’s the first time that the colors come together.  Love the opener; what a hit and use of True Colors.  True Colors and Shaker Loops being the through line musically is good.  I didn’t think I’d like the channel-switching in part 2 but it works well enough for me.  I’ve seen a lot of comments complaining that it’s too disjointed and “glitchy”.  So they’ve nailed what they were going for.

Regiment: This is my least favorite JD Shaw book in the last 5 years.  That being said, it’s still freaking awesome.  24 mellophones.  Fly or Die.  Equilibrium(even though I’d like to hear the Enter the Galaxies bit but whatever) is going to be great once it gets a little more cohesive.  The ballad feels undeveloped and understated.  I would have liked to see a different piece instead of just using the section of Equilibrium.  The percussion pieces(Surfacing and Pillar III) don’t seem to add anything to the musical package to me, but I’m a winds guy so what do I know.  Not my cup of tea or area of expertise.  The closing reprise needs more than block chords.  The mellophone stuff isn’t particularly spectacular either.  I hope this changes but it’s growing on me.  Very good start to the season and positioned very well in relation to Crusaders.

Cavaliers: No.  Nothing about this show is good.  Before I go further I want to make it clear that this is NOT me bashing the members.  They are not to blame for anything except performance issues, which admittedly did exist last night.  The music is atrocious and goes nowhere.  There is no discernible direction to it, and there is no semblance of the theme ‘Beneath the Armor’.  It’s just pop stuff and then a muddled mess of stuff.  Can’t say anything about percussion other than they got 2 not in content but in achievement.  The book is there for them; they just have to work it up.  Visual wasn’t particularly memorable or meaningful.  The props add nothing to the show and serve no usefulness in conveying the concept other than one side has faces on them.  The costume change makes sense to me and is executed better than Blue Stars last year.  Basically this show is a catastrophe of design, and I feel bad that the members feel that they’re taking the blame for it.  It is not your fault, if you’re reading this.  Go as far as you can get it.

Blue Stars: I don’t really have much of an opinion other than it’s a better idea than last year.  The music isn’t all that memorable to me but it’s perhaps being overshadowed by Such Letting Go Is Love from last year for me.  I’ll see it live on Sunday and make up my mind then.

Colts: HARD book.  Very impressive to see them trying to pull off this vehicle.  If they can, consider them solidly in Finals.  I didn’t like last year very much, but this year is a different animal.  It’s going by to be fun to see this grow into itself.  I don’t like the props, and the concept seems to get lost, but the fundamentals are there, and that’s what will get them into that last night in Indy.

Promising start to the season, and I’m hoping that BD takes something other than gold this year.  If I had to put money on someone, I’d say Bloo because of their silver threepeat, so they’re the most well-positioned historically.  But having seen Crown’s first three parts and now Boston, I think it’s going to be a very hard-fought top 4.  I predict a deathmatch basically the whole season.  BD is good as always but this year’s show feels a whole lot like 2016 to me.  I don’t think that it effectively captures its vast concept in its current form, and I don’t see that changing.  Of course, tomorrow they’ll score a 90 or something at their first show and that will be the season gone.  But I like almost everything I’ve seen from almost every corps so far, so this is shaping up to be one of the best seasons yet.

A couple things from tonight’s first show:

1. Crown and Boston were just wow!!! I’m now fully in love with BAC’s show after a 2nd watch, and Crown was just, well, Crown. Not a full show yet from them, but the GE is crazy and guard is sooo good! BAC’s perc is looking to possibly take it this season, unless Bloo or BD has something to say about that, thought they will def be winning guard, at least as of now, i think.

PR had people standing multiple times, and it’s deserved. That Fly or Die section is gonna have people going nuts all season. I could definitely see a top 5 push for them!

the other 3 were great. It’s unfortunate for BS that the judges aren’t liking the show rn as much as I’d think, but they still have plenty time to clean, I personally think they should be over colts and cavs, but only time will tell. Can’t wait to see SCV and the other west coast groups here shortly!

Now for our west coast groups:

Yes, BD is definitely the group to beat at the moment, but god they were sooo good! Guard was the highlight for me, but yeah, looking to 4 peat, definitely catchable though, but I very much enjoyed their performance.

SCV: Welcome back!! Opening statement was Wow! Will probably win percussion, barley lost to BD last night but god they are unreal. Guard and drill definitely needs some work, but I see them competing for 5th-7th with PR and Mandies, though I could possibly see them breaking into the top 4, but it won’t be easy, but an amazing first show from them, and they did only go up to their ballad.

Mandies: What an entertaining show!!! It’s like a broadway production, almost something you’d feel like McKinney North would do of recent years. Probably their strongest show post-Covid, guard was amazing, it’s going to be another crowd favorite.

not much to say about PC. I liked it, they aren’t as clean as last season, but I just need a few more watches, was very tired when they were performing at 11:30 last night. Another great comp though, can’t wait to see Bloo

oh do Bluecoats have some sort of premiere right now? ive been most excited to see them. gut feeling coming into the season was they might pull off the win.

Crown sounded great, but not feeling the show at all. id have BAC over them, bigger and more memorable moments for sure. more creative as well. ngl, i turned off both SCV and Mandarins halfway through, just didn't move me or keep my interest. buuuut still need to watch a proper high cam of lots of em.

yes! Their show is SOOOO GOOD! The music is so interesting, but their opening hit is so different to what they have done in the past. As they say, it truly echoes :)
