Now that 5A UIL State is over, my thoughts have turned to this competition.  I enjoy BOA in a different way than UIL.  For me personally, and I'm not speaking for my kids, or for the band directors or boosters or anyone else--  I consider UIL competition to be more important, and I also prefer the scoring for UIL over BOA.  I understand that's a heated debate around here, but it's just my personal opinion and approach to the activity of marching band.  Everyone else on the planet can vehemently disagree with me and that's fine, I don't feel like it needs to be debated any further, it already gets plenty of discussion time on this forum and the other one. :)

However, all that said, since I consider UIL to be more like business, in a lot of ways it makes BOA more fun.  I like the multiple conference classifications competing against one another, I like that anyone can participate, I like the variety of shows and styles on display.  So now I'm really looking forward to this one, and to Grand Nats the following week.

I'm not the prediction-making type, and I haven't yet seen all of the shows that are likely to make finals, but the predictions I've seen so far all look about right to me. But then again, sometimes we see surprises at Finals, and that makes it fun as well.

Wishing everyone all the luck, it's going to be a fun couple of days in San Antonio.   But I'll be honest, when we're done, I'm not going to miss driving up and down I35 4 times in less than a week... ;)

A very experienced panel! Looking quite TMC-ish, so hopefully those bands have availed themselves of the judges' original commentary. Actually, quite a few of these judges were on the Grand Nationals panel last year as well, which perhaps shows just how much this event is respected. May be a double-edged sword, however, depending on what you thought about the National Finals results last year and the gaps that opened up there... 😅

Also, how have your predictions changed? I'm genuinely curious.

There is one small revision to the schedule (Sandra Day O'Connor moves to end of block 1 on Friday at 12:00 and Veterans Memorial moves to 10:00) so I have revised the OP to include the changes.

Good luck everyone!

CP and rouse so low??

TWHS always seems to be on the outside looking in ... in that sub-elite tier, as great as they are. In your opinion (this is a question for everyone), what do they need to do to move into regular contention for first place?

And since I'm a Bridgeland parent, what the heck, I'll ask the same question for Bridgeland - what does it need to do to move into TWHS' current position, consistently contending for 4-6?

Good luck to everyone competing here over the weekend!! Quick question for anyone who might know, so you’ve got the option to by the individual prelims and finals, or prelims and finals, or, you buy the prelims/finals combo for a couple bucks cheaper. If I buy that under day 1 or day 2, does it work for both prelims or just the one I get under that specific day? I’m planning on getting the prelims/finals under day 2 bc I won’t be able to watch all of tomorrow, but if I do that isn’t it both prelims included or just Saturdays?

hmmmmm.... i think there was a discussion on this earlier. don't think tw will win a major championship again until they narrow the musicianship gap b/w them and Hebron/Vandy. frankly imo they've been quite rickety early season musically every yr since the director change. still a lil freaked out by their trumpets lol.

at the same time they're already in the elite tier, despite whatever the random forum predictions indicate. i mean, they've been 2nd place and less than a point off of 1st place the past two years, aaand prob should have been top 3 at BOASA in 2021 as well, given the Nats results, w/ them like 3 pointing CTJ or whatever. think i said this before, but they're good at things that are less well understood by fans, like visual and effect.

maybe all the H-town bands could step it up a bit musically. ofc that doesn't mean falling into the "Texas loud" trap or playing a billion questionably musical 16th notes, bc that gets tiresome. tho maaaybe a lil more technical razzle dazzle could be nice.

I think CP has finished 11, 10, 9 over the past 3 years.  So I guess the mathematically correct prediction for this year, would be 8th? :)

The SASR is always just so stacked, making Finals at all, is a major accomplishment.

Fun part is, we'll all get to watch it play out on the field, over the next 2 days!  Truly wishing the best of luck to all competing bands, this is the fun stuff, enjoy it!

This would mean 0 bands outside of the top 5 in panel 2 make finals and the next 4 after the top 5 from each are all in panel 1. While possible, I doubt that will happen.

I agree, historically panel 1 scores tend to deflate, even for really good bands. Take Cedar park for example, really good all of last year, they went on first and then cant get top half. It sucks but that is just the way this super regional works, most bubble bands in block one probably wont make it, just looking at statistics

Good luck to everybody competing tomorrow and the day after. I get the feeling that not a single person in this forum or in the predictions subsection can predict the 14 finalists in correct order. This is by far my favorite competition of the year, all these end-of-season tx bands coming together to play for one last time, its basically a state championship of its own but with get. I personally enjoy this competition for the Grand nats, basically anybody making finals or on the bubble of making final here can make it to the grand nats finals and its just not the same without texas bands, there is just something special about tx hs marching bands that pulls me in. Regardless of the outcome here or at UIl 6A state to those going, congrats on a great year, every single band has put in so much work since July or August back in the texas heat all building up to these last few weeks, it has been such an amazing season, cant wait to see what happens.

Predictions for this is hard enough, I would not want to be a judge for this. Glad I will get to spectate instead!!!

Gonna be a quick down and back trip for us.  Gotta leave here around 9:30 to make it to Lot A by 11:30, band performs at 1:30, we'll be packed up and gone by 2:15, hopefully home by 4:45 depending on traffic (and how long we spend at Buccees 😉 ).  I'd really like to be home in time to catch Ronald Reagan's show streaming, at 5, and then FloMo shortly thereafter.

While I think that CP could maybe beat Marcus, Vandy and Hebron are one whole different level. They both have held top 3-4 (I'm not sure right now because I have not checked) spots in the nation. They are both crazy bands. While it's not impossible for them to be beat (Rouse beat Vandy last year at BOA Austin) I think that Vandy And Hebron have the top 2 spots pretty much locked down. It would be awesome to see CP place top 3 though for sure!!

I wouldn’t be to quick to count out FlowerMound for 2nd or 1st, especially seeing how the US bands comp went and how close they were to Hebron.

To everyone performing this weekend I hope all of you have amazing performances! Seniors, for some of you this is your last performance inspire your bandmates and leave it all on the field! Don’t leave an ounce of doubt that this was the best performance you have given all year! In order to make finals here you have to give it all that you have. Perfection is what it takes! But no matter what enjoy the moment! Us as audience members will enjoy every performance no matter what!
