Tubalord11
Congratulations to Aledo, Midlothian, CH, BC and Richland on advancing to state!! Not any shockers these are the 5 going, and honestly not super shocked to see Midlothian place second. They've been super strong all season long, and with a good run and time at state, I don't think finals is out of the question for them. Obviously, just because they were over BC, CH and Richland here doesn't guarantee they will be at state, but they've got some strong momentum to ride off of. Birdville in 10th is definitely I bit of a shocker, but this area is extremely talented. Congratulations to everyone who's season is now over, go get some rest, and GL to the 5 going to state!! Popular Post 5abands
Wow. Huge congrats to Midlothian, never thought they would get 2nd this year at area and colleyville proved they are back after not qualifying for state last year. Grapevine’s program has come a long way to get here i would love to see them make state they have been close. Huge congrats to all the bands and the results just show you how competitive this area is once again justabandperson, Usernamesomething, lunareclipse18 and 1 other
justabandperson
Let's be honest, I'm shocked by these results. All 5 of the qualifiers did great, but I personally don't agree with the rankings. Based on the shows that I saw, I thought the results for top 5 would be: 1. Aledo 2. Centennial/Richland 3. Centennial/Richland 4. Colleyville/Midlothian 5. Midlothian/Colleyville (didn't see Midlothian's show but I've heard it was great) All in all, these bands did very well and great job to everyone, not just area finalists! If you disagree with me that's fine, but I am curious to know other people's opinions on this. On the UIL site, I have looked at the scores and am very confused. I thought that the scores would be close, but some of the scores are just confusing. For example, Richland tied with Centennial for 2nd in prelims and their Music 3 score was a 3, which isn't bad. But in the finals scoring, the score for Music 3 somehow went to a 10. I do think that Aledo is very good at their show, but they got complete 1s in finals, which is odd. They did very well, but I feel like the gap between the top 5 shouldn't have been so large. Once again, great job to every band and every performer on the field! I think the state comp is going to be very interesting this year
Popular Post txpurple21
Midlothian was very deserving of their second place finish. I have seen them a few times this season and they get better each time. They were absolutely stunning yesterday. Going in I figured they would be on the verge 5/6, but when I saw their prelim and final performances, I knew they were going to State. Getting 2nd place was not in my bingo card for them, but it was well deserved. I did think their show and performances were better than everyone, but Aledo. Congrats to all of the Area bands that advanced to finals and the ones that made it to State. justabandperson, Tubalord11, lythrum and 1 other

rhsbandfan
I’m not trying to take anything away from any of the bands yesterday but the judging made no sense. I have looked at the scores and the discrepancy between judges is strange. Some bands were ranked 25th by one judge and 5th by another. That big of a jump seems odd. Also judges that have a band 3rd in music in prelims and then dropped to 10th in finals. I saw both prelims and finals and the difference was minimal. The same judge also had a band in 1st for music in prelims and then 8th in finals. There was not that big of a jump. It just seems odd to me. I loved Midlothian’s show, but I didn’t think they would make second. It was the strangest band competition scoring I have seen. Also I heard that birdville was called grapevine on their tapes by a judges. Just weird things all around. whoisjudging

Certain judges just have different things that they see or hear at different times that another might have that caused a higher or lower placement, and just different opinions/views on things, just how it works. Every band except Aledo experienced huge shifts in placements from prelims to finals, which was not the case for most years in this Area's finals competition. Either every band had extreme differences in their runs from prelims to finals or the adjudication was inconsistent, meaning it may have been inefficient. Many students and band staff were surprised and confused by the results yesterday. Either way, the results were made and I wish good luck for every band that made state, and an incredible job for all the bands that performed yesterday! pineapple
isn’t it just that the judges rotate positions? like it’s the same 5 people judging, they’re just now judging different things like switching from music to visual
lythrum
it is? i did not know that if it were the case, but still means that they are focusing on a different thing (except for one music judge by that) but doesn't eliminate bias but yk maybe thats how it works

But it was off for everyone so I don’t think you can say it is the reason for different placing. Every band that made state and placed did it because they deserved it. The judges all switching helped prevent bias but also changed what each main judging focus was. I don’t get all the confusion on the placing aledo was always going to win and it was common knowledge that the rest of the places would be close. Midlothian second was a slight shock but they are good enough to be that high. They beat CH once at Mansfield and barely lost in finals and at boa they were right behind BC. Every performance of there’s has seemingly gotten a lot better. lythrum and txpurple21

5abands
The only scoring thing that seemed really off was Music Birdville getting first in prelims by the music 3 judge and in finals richland getting dead last by the music 3 judge, other than that I dont have anything to complain about for judging, scorings are different from different judges and getting 3rd in caption and also getting 7th in the same caption is quite normal. whoisjudging
I think unless you have been a band judge for 5 consecutive years, you're not going to know how it works BUT saying a HUMANS opinion on a named band doesn't give room for bias is living in a false reality. Just because the judging switches also doesn't eliminate potential bias (same judges, different places). There is going to be discrepancies in any judging, and I challenge people in this thread to be open minded and not make their predictions and their opinions on who is better their book of law. We're in marching band we're supposed to support each other, when did this website become a place to belittle opinions, just because the dont align with yours?
