UIL 5A State Marching Contest 2024 (Nov. 4-5)

Lake Belton is the most pleasant and unexpected surprise for me today so far.  I enjoyed all aspects of their show-- very good music and drill, and beautiful visuals with zero props or front screens or other added elements.  The color guard costumes were perfectly utilized for added visual impact.

Were you watching in person or on the stream? I saw it in person up high and I’m really not sure what you’re referring to. Perhaps there was stuff in the live stream.

I watched it on the stream and I sure didn’t see any of the things they referred to.

Rouse: The sound of the full ensemble is outstanding. Big brass hits sound like an actual organ. Visual of this show is insane. The small brass ensemble was playing crazy technique cleanly.

Lake Belton: Just a side note this front ensemble is huge. This group had such a mature sound all the way through. No props, but honestly this show didn’t need them. Color guard uniforms were super cool to help with the visuals of the show.

Pioneer: Flute and Flugelhorn soloist sounded great! Liked when there were train like musical notes to go with the show! Woodwind sound and technique was very nice!

Aledo: This show is so visual, and the entire field is full. Loved the sound from this ensemble and there is not a single dull moment in this show. Percussion was on fire, beats were clean!

Barbers Hill: Immersion for this show starts VERY early in the preshow, props to getting the parents in on the GE. Having a huge plane on the field is cool. Clarinet RIB solo was super impressive. Overall super fun show.

Argyle: Super cool show, loved the moments when groups would get together to “get their picture taken”. Soloists all over the show, loved the trombone solo. Full band visual stuff was super neat.

Liberty Hill: So much emotion in this show. Also quite a but of power from this band! Music works super well with this show theme.

Sharyland: Woodwinds sounded super good, they killed their feature. Loved how the low brass sounded, especially the trombones! Very solid execution of this theme.

got to watch everyone from barbers hill on, was pleasantly surprised by barbers hill’s performance, they sounded so good.

i am not surprised that argyle was that good, they were known for being the champions of 4a of course.

being from the austin area myself seeing liberty hill’s exponential growth has truly been a joy and tbh i think they’re a lot louder than most people give them credit for considering their size

sharyland’s woodwinds were soo good sometimes i cant wrap my mind around how high schoolers could be that good 😭

They have been doing that all day and is part of the schedule they have to follow...it is the uil making it that way.

Yup it's UIL's schedule.  The picture actually took our band so long this morning, that they couldn't get back to the truck to load their instruments quickly enough and we almost missed our parking lot mandatory exit time.  They need to change the UIL schedule, because this current process doesn't work.

My suggestion would be to take the pictures somewhere else.

This is a great point I hadn't considered, but goodness it's a bad look.

El Dorado: Nice Section features! I love golden hour, it’s interesting to see it arranged for marching band!! Loved the hit in the ballad, super moving!! Congrats to them on their first time making it to state!

Pieper: WHAT A SOUND! This show not only sounded amazing but had an incredible visual alongside it. Super warm timbre coming from the group, especially in the ballad. Trombone + band jam sesh was spectacular.

Mt. Pleasant: Visually a stellar show. From the backdrop to the stage and the add ons, it def had amazing GE. Baritone soloist was amazing, loved their tone. Also 30+ color guard on rifle is actually so cool.

Burleson Centennial: Super impressed with the front ensemble book! They make it look easy. The clarinet and flute duets were both super nice! The hit towards the end was fire.

Kempner: Welcome back Halloween!!! But for real, loved the backdrop of this show before it even started. Brass technique is great in this show. Love how this ensemble treated dynamics. Another congratulations to yall’s first time at state!

Tom Glenn: Nice chops battery! Trumpet soloist had a beautiful sound. Loved the styling the band did in the closer. Again, BATTERY!!!

Jack C Hayes: Last one, and this show is VERY gold. Love it. Super powerful opening hit. The visual to go along side it was great! LOW BRASS FEATURE?! Good job. The wood winds killed it directly after as well.

I think the photographer hollering over the band that is currently performing, just to get a picture, is a lot worse.  Many reasons they should move this process somewhere else, outside of the dome's grandstands.
