OK...only down-side of owning a woodwind. I go through at LEAST 2-3 Reeds a Week. I go through reeds fast. I wear em down and its bye bye. Its a hassal sometimes but whatever gets the job done. But im starting to run out of money lol Well i wanna know how many yall go through in 1 Week????

really?

i use 4 at a time, numbered (1,2, etc.) and rotate them different one each day. they usually last me a while (longer during concert season since we don't have the harshness of the stands and all that jazz.

Yeah it does get expensive, actulley today i bought a reed to start the week off, I try to keep them fresh since i hate when they get old and airy is all. And since i might get a Solo in our show i really want to have a good sound at all times. But yeah...it gets expensive

I used to switch reeds out during the weeks. I had anywhere from 4-8 reeds that I would change out periodically. It seriously makes them last a lot longer.

And to rdzsaxplaya... how in the world do you go through 2 reeds a week? Do you try to break them in? Newly opened reeds should only be played on for about 5 minutes the first couple of days and slowly work your way up from there. Opening a reed and playing on it for a couple of hours (rehearsal) will kill the reed.

Going through 2 reeds a week its easy, right now im down to one reed a week, i figured i could use a older reed for outside rehersal and my good reed for inside rehersals, either way i would still go through a few reeds during a short amount of time. As soon as i get the solo( if i get it ) i might not buy a reed for awhile....Well Untill big performances that is

if you soak them first and break them in with long tones, they last a gazillion times better and produce a lot better sound. Go with like Vandoren 3-3.5 for optimal use, and rotate like 4-8 at a time. When I marched one reed would last a good month or so.

I never break mine in, that could explain why they don't last though.

Indeed. Playing straight on a new reed is an amazingly effective way of KILLING it. Breaking them in slowly, as in 5 minutes the first day, 10 the next, 15 the next, all with low, slow long tones will greatly improve the life of your reeds. That and switching them out.

If I could I'd go through about 2 to three but I don't have the monees to do such things so I settle for one until It's soft then get a ne one. OR switch 'em out every once in a while. I playe the best ones at contest and UIl and such things as for games neh.

well try playin on bari reeds...I have to play like 30 bucks jus for 5 and that pretty much sucks...i have to "push em to tha limit" if u know wat I mean...but sometimes...they jus have to be put to rest...

Yeah i know how you feel on bari reeds.....I rememeber when i first played bari....it was awsome lol i actuley play alto, tenor, bari but out of all 3 i lyk alto the best, and the reeds are cheaper but thats just a added perk :D

I agree with itsstephenyo post.

A better question is how many playable reads does someone go through a week. Its all relative. Im very particular, I like a very pure dark sound that I can produce at a pp to a forte and not have much noticible back pressure. That for me is a vandoren 3 on alto of which about half are good and the other half (well if you have a stand in band that keeps creeping down... the reed holders wedged up against the pole works wonders) are trash. Rotate them rehearsal to rehearsal, practice session to practice session and you'll get more use out of them. And not that I dont like the idea of getting the most of marching band rehearsals... but I would recommend using lesser reeds (the trash I mentioned above) for those considering the conditions yall often face.

Yeah...since marching season is bassically over for us since we didnt get a 1 at UIL...(212 to be exact) i get to be more musical, which i also like the pure dark sound on my alto sax.....Vandoren 3 are fine with me, well most of them....lol

I'm the worst section leader ever, we barely get out of band early enough to get to 2nd period on time (which is a college class for me). So, I leave my reed on the mouthpiece till they turn black, I go through about a box of 3.5's a semester.

Honestly, during marching season, I will play a reed until it is literally not playable. We go through reeds like crazy because how hard we're playing on them. I don't start taking care of my reeds until it's Region/State audition season/concert season.

Same here. I've pretty much had the same one for at least 2 months already. I bet my tone is horrible right now, haha.

I try to alternate reeds so they last longer, i dont know about yall but chipped reeds sound the best to me, even thought my director hates when i do that, and i always get a long lecture about how if i was in the symphony having a chipped reed, or even to soft reed is totally out of the question...blah blah blah hahahaha :D

well during marching season i go through like 3-4 reeds and week cause it get really gross so they get chipped really badly!

ugh!

and during concert season usually i have 4 reeds that i switch off with

and i through them away usually about 2-3 weeks

and yeah buying reeds does get expensive mostly

since there raising the prices!

grr!
