UIL 6A Area J 2024

Recommended Posts

Now that we know everyones competing at area and that it’s ten bands to finals I wanted to make a prediction for finals with what we know 2 weeks away.

1. Marcus

2. Hebron

3. Flower mound

4. Prosper

5. Wylie

6. McKinney

7. Rock Hill

8. Braswell

9. Wylie East

10. McKinney Boyd

I feel pretty confident on the top 3 with Marcus and Hebron possibly being interchangeable. That fourth state spot is going to be highly competitive with Prosper and Wylie being top contenders for it but McKinney and Rock Hill I feel right now could possibly sneak in there. I have confidence in Braswell, Wylie East and Boyd in making finals but as we’ve seen anything can happen. To summarize I feel 1-3 are interchangeable, 4-7 are interchangeable and 8-10 are interchangeable. I can’t wait to see how this plays out.

This is exciting! It looks like we’ll get a new tenth area added this year. 6A high schools in this area include:

Hebron

Flower Mound

Marcus

Lewisville

Prosper

Rock Hill

Eaton

Byron Nelson

Allen

Plano

Plano West

Plano East

Wylie

Wylie East

McKinney

Braswell

Guyer

Little Elm

That's crazy! I never knew this until today, holy moly!

My top 3 are the same with yours, but I think 4 in my list (sorry but I haven't seen the shows this year), I would say Braswell

I agree, I'd love to see what marcus is cooking up this year.

Marcus is good this year but watching them at BOA prosper was a little underwhelming, they’re very clean and I love their music but it felt like it was missing quite a bit and I wasn’t sure if they had even finished their show or not.

I don't think they're done with the show. They historically don't debut the full show with props until UIL Area. I was at Region 2 last weekend and it was the same ending as BoA Prosper. Definitely abrupt and kind of a "Huh?" moment. The folks in front of me with Marcus shirts were talking about looking forward to seeing the full show so I'm anticipating there will be more at Area J.

Can anyone confirm how many state spots there will be? I counted 27 bands getting a 1 which means 5. I’m just confused because if that’s true I thought it would’ve been a bigger deal.

Will check right now!

Okay so there are only 22(maybe 21) bands in this area in total, so yeah only 4 to state

It's unfortunate that some of these bands will miss out on an appearance at State. Arguably the most difficult Region/Area in the State. Here's hoping that in the future, UIL will find a way to get these bands the appearances that they deserve.

Definitely one of the most competitive! One spot for 7 bands that are worthy of state. Unfortunately, UIL won't be doing anything soon to adjust this area, especially since they just made this area this season, but hopefully the last band is able to be different each season

Personally, I think they should adjust the entire system.
Caveat: Judging is always subjective

First method: Record the performances at Area competition. Give the judges at each Area one (or two) alternate slots to submit to a panel at the State selection level. The State selection level can judge all of the presented alternates and invite x number to the State competition.
Second method: Rather than decide x number of bands from each Area advance, provide the total number of bands for each Division (1A, 2A, 3A, etc) will advance. Then use a point system to judge each band. Highest point totals advance until all slots are filled. Ties would have to be dealt with.

They won't adjust the areas any time soon, unfortunately.
If I were a director in this Area, I would highly consider not marching in the UIL contests and only go to BOA or USBands contests. 3 or 4 bands in this Area take this approach, only the 3 would ever advance. That would highlight the problem.

At any rate, looking forward to the Area competition.

Yeah, I get your points. I think the biggest issue with using recordings is that having a second performance tends to sometimes be what really helps motivate a group which then could result in them moving up spots and making state, especially for the programs that make finals that have to perform so early. I think the system right now is fair in terms of the evaluation process, it's just that simply due to the competitiveness of Texas marching band, certain areas are going to have legacy programs that are at state year after year. Another issue with what you suggested is that if there was a committee that judged all the bands in the area, those that make state from areas that don't tend to have any finalists (not trying to dog on anyone just get a point across, everyone who makes state is amazing!) wouldn't get the opportunity to make state. Texas just has SO many amazing marching bands, and it's reflected throughout the nation, but I think the system they have in place is as good and fair as it's gonna get, but I do understand what you're saying. I think state, especially in the areas like J where there's really only one spot for grabs (assuming the 3 Lewisville schools don't fall off) serves as a good motivator for members to really give it their all from day one knowing they have to be their best come area finals if they want to advance.
