This was... interesting.

Lots of state-worthy bands that went early in the morning didn't even make the finals cut, and slotting definitely had to do with that.

That being said, congrats to the finalists. LASA and Belton were a nice surprise. Good luck to the state qualifiers on November 4-5!

Is there an error on the UIL page results / doc? Area D is the only 5A area that is showing placements exceeding the amount of finalists. Actually Area D shows all of the finals scoring as the same as prelims, which is also exclusive to this area.

yes, this is the real finals recap

very interesting how Hays suddenly became so dominant in visimage.thumb.png.e687d5af4d11113595deb7dd32e592d4.png

As a band director, I always secretly make my predictions for every contest. And UIL never fails to shock me. I predicted that Hendrickson would win the Area, and that Pieper and Lockhart were locks for State. I knew Hendrickson would make it because they are historically successful. The rest were up for grabs. The judging at UIL contests is wack. There are three music judges and two visual judges. Each music judge adjudicates five captions. The visual judges each judge three captions. And you could have one judge give 1st in music and another one give the same band 20th. You rarely see such varying scores at other contests.

The UIL needs to rework their judging system. The content and design caption does not judge how the students perform, so that one should be removed. There should be one judge per caption, instead of five captions per judge. They need to hire percussion-specific judges for the percussion caption. Never understood why the UIL is so stubborn with making things more efficient. I would hate to judge a UIL marching contest. I'd be overwhelmed having to judge between 3 and 5 captions at once.

My friends and I always make our predictions knowing that the UIL will go the complete opposite.

Congratulations to the bands who made finals. I'm anxious to hear who earns the spots for State!

Look out Texas. Stay away from wines right now..Grapes are sour!!

To clarify, I teach middle school and am in no way associated with this Area. A majority of folks on this site are parents and fans and are likely unaware of how different UIL judging is compared to BOA. My intent was to inform users of how the system works and why change is necessary. Other band directors are aware of how inefficient the current system is, and reworking it will benefit everyone involved.

Congratulations to Hendrickson, Pieper, LB, Hays, and SV on advancing to state!! Glad to see Hays is finally going back, but not really any shockers here. Big ups to LASA, about time they made finals, congratulations to ya'll on your season, and to everyone else that ended their comp season!!

Yesterday was a great competition. McCallum didn't make state, and LASA did surprisingly well. The LASA synth didn't work in the prelims, but they were still ranked 5th. It looked like they were going to pull off an upset if they had a clean performance and they got their synth working for finals. In the finals, they had no functioning tech at all, their incredible oboe soloist wasn't mic-ed, and you couldn't hear their narrator.  Devastating for those kids.  It seems AISD schools can't catch a break.  I don't know enough about UIL judging but it seems like if not for the tech issues, they would be headed to the Alamodome or was it more than that?

McCallum's show was better than the last two seasons and I thought they had it in the bag. I can't quite put my finger on what didn't work for them this year. It seems their style just doesn't appeal to UIL judges?  Hendrickson and Lake Belton were incredible! Loved that LB put in such a strong performance with no props.

I don't think the technical issues played a huge part in the finals results. They don't really look the narration at all either way. And the same thing for McCallum, it's not that they weren't good or were lacking anything substantial, it's just that some schools just played or moved better. After seeing all of the shows, the 5 that advanced made sense and were good and had a lot of challenging things in their show

I am a band parent from Anderson and we were all very disappointed to not make finals this year. Your explanation of how UIL judging works is super helpful and I really appreciate you sharing - thank you

Do you know where to find a detailed document like this one for prelims?

Edit-- sorry, I thought I had what you were looking for but I only linked the sheet with the ordinals, not the detailed sheet, so I deleted it.  I'm not sure where those come from, I think the directors get them so this is probably a "leak."

Anyway, as an Anderson marching band alum from back in the day, and someone with friends whose kids march for Anderson currently, I feel for you all, and I'm always rooting for you to advance and get over the hump.  I know it's disappointing when the kids work so hard, and the results don't come.  I definitely wish you all the best in the future.

Thanks so much for your kind response. We really felt we had an excellent shot at area finals this year - especially after doing well at Cap City (2nd in prelims, 3rd in finals), having a great new team of directors, and a strong freshmen class. But, we should do good at US Bands - and there's always next year!
