UIL 6A Area G 2024

It’s not about playing hard music. It’s the whole

show in comparison to the whole show of other bands.

Yes. I’m well aware of that.  But that is one area I have always felt should be taken into consideration.   It’s easy to execute good fundamentals, etc when your music is easy.

OMG I can't believe this contest!  Why are the results so wack? I mean, JBA and Hanna I guess were decent, but..

Harlingen was great!  Not even finals??? I can't believe this.

LF was the powerhouse - should be at state

Congrats to the two going to state, but I guess big and sloppy and gimmicky is the way to go.

So like if anyone also attended like me, how bout a breakdown of each band and what you thought?

Whoa whoa whoa…

Many people are frustrated about the results from this competition every year but let’s not forget that the students and directors also view these forums. To demean their hard work is a bit harsh. Every band in this area consistently gets better and that’s how it should be! There’s no reason to disrespect other bands who were not “sloppy and gimmicky”  based off of UIL standards. Take a look at the adjudication sheet (can be found on the UIL Area G website) and really try to understand how much they look at. It works wonders to understand that there’s a lot more that goes into it than what you may think.

So clearly you have a favorite. You should always appreciate a great band and their hard work.

I don’t know what criteria you have to say big and sloppy for both JBA and Hanna.

JBA was ranked 1st by 3 out of 5 judges

Hanna was ranked 2nd by 2 out of the 5 judges and the other judges still ranked them higher than other bands

Although the results aren’t what you want them to be. Don’t make less of the hard work that those bands put in. You’re not a judge at this contest and neither am I. The results are final. Appreciate that area G will be well represented at state.

My thoughts are the top 2 bands going to state were not the best ones.  I honestly didn’t like Laredo’s show at all. And both of the top 2 bands had safe music.  ENHS imo got robbed here, and I think Weslaco at least should have been above Los Fresnos, thats for sure.  And yes, I may be biased being as my daughter plays flute for Weslaco.  Their music was hard. ENHS and Weslaco consistently beat the other schools at previous competitions.

You ARE being biased. Also, winning early competitions mean nothing. As you can tell by the results, it’s about taking the criticism from those and improving which Hanna and Alexander did. Unfortunately some bands peak early and some bands peak late. Previous competitions mean nothing in band get that in your head.

a lot of the music is not difficult at all, but there’s also to take into account, most of the playing is not being done while holding, there is a lot of playing while marching and doing visual work. also not to mention, the ending with the brass is extremely exposed and hard to pull off after marching that full movement before. there’s a lot more to it than just surface level. either way, this contest was packed with great bands, even non-finalists.

I have to agree it was a tough competition this year especially with only two bands advancing. Alexander’s show was very emotionally impactful but the music just didn’t resonate with me in my opinion. Hanna however had an amazing show all around and I loved their sea monster theme. My favorite was definitely Edinburg North though, that opening hit was completely unexpected and their New Orleans theme was something I would’ve loved to see at state. I feel like we’re going into a new era of marching band that consists of a more theatrical production with elaborate choreography and staging rather than strictly just marching and playing and that’s alright, it’s how the activity evolves to stay relevant and encourage young players to partake in it. 🤠

Your delusional.

There's alot more than just "it's hard"  How much movement while playing? How well played/balanced/transparent was the music? Maybe those bands make hard music sound easy?

Get a grip.

LF played at an amazingly high level - great sounds! Gotta improve the visual package.

Alexander is always challenging - but I gotta agree with previous posts - big and sloppy.

Hanna - jeez these kids can PLAY! What a fun show to watch - and OMG  the kraken! Kinda smaller than before?

ENHS - good to see them doing well - but needs more refinement to take it on to the next level

United was interesting. Dunno what else to say.

Weslaco had some good full band spots - but then a lot of spots when hardly anyone was playing during the marching (foot timing was a issue to)

So.. IDK  I think the judges prolly had the right call here. Really strong judging panel.

Everybody has a opinion - let's hear them!

The show I liked the music from the most (arrangement wise) had to be the Edinburgh opener. I know Little Fugue is overplayed in the marching world, but the way they did it with the Saxaphone quartet and that big sudden hit was awesome. The only thing is I felt it was a little overconfident at some spots and they went past their best sounds at some point, but you could tell the amount of passion and energy the kids had while marching and playing that show. Really entertaining and a great production overall

I personally think the 2 best bands got the deserved spots!!  They were ranked 1st and 2nd both prelims and finals!! Alexander getting 1st place from ALL music judges in prelims! Hanna left a gap between them and United at prelims. Congrats to all bands!

That being said, some final thoughts. I heard United’s improvement prior to area never knew the improvement was that great!! They went from possibly not being a finals contender to 3rd place at prelims! I think United definitely had the most difficult show on the field, it made it hard to achieve! They still have the trend of going down at finals, once they fix that they’ll be up there again. Good for them!! Seeing LF at state would’ve been great, I wish Area G had lots of 6a bands again:(

Let’s please try not to be negative to any bands from the competition! Every year the judging is close, every band wanted one of those spots for state!

I don't get why people are so surprised with JBA every year. They clearly have a formula that works, and that's great for them. All we can do is respect it cause they put on some great shows. As for all the other results. It really couldve been anyone. Truly. That's NOT to say Hanna wasn't amazing cause they always are.

Yesssss, United had some challenging content WITH a young band and new staff. Their numbers are finally going up. (I'm an alum🤫). I'm excited to see where this new United goes.

100%!! I heard their new band director speaking to the band after the results, it sounded like he’s already hungry for that spot next year!! He really knows his stuff.

Opinions are fine, but, there's no need for back-handed compliments like those.

Still true today! I’ve had the opportunity to go to so many competitions across the state and witness not only other parents but band programs show respect and appreciation to other band programs despite losing to them. At the end of the day, these programs do compete and all these kids and teachers put in truly hard work which takes months to prepare. Sometimes the results aren’t what we want them to be but, we have to accept them. None of us judge yesterday’s contest and that’s then end of that. The 2 best bands in south Texas advanced and I’m glad they’re representing us! The rest of you on here should be doing the same! Be happy that we are being well represented!

Hey!  This thread is dying.  Why don't anyone else post?  C'mon guys - give a breakdown critique on each band's performance.

Also..... what do u think of JBA and Hanna's chances at State?

shhhh let it die. At the same time, I think hanna will place higher than JBA. JBA prob top 30's and hanna mid 30's.
