Duncanville Marching Invitational (October 26)

Ok Keller we get it, you’re amazing at everything! Guard, woodwinds, percussion, brass, visual execution, everything elite! My god that feature in the opener where the woodwinds are playing that 8th-note ostinato juxtaposed by the brass melodic triplet line, the timing was soooo good! The brass tunes amazingly well! The woodwinds are sooo with with their technique! World class

Waxahachie - They’re back for more and I’m ready for it!  Playing the Carolina in my Mind chorale is a baller move for a warm up.  Some trouble in the pit triplet runs.  Still phenomenal tenor sax playing.  Great shaping of the woodwind lines.  Great transparency of sound.  Fantastic opening hit!  Cleeeean brass feature!  I’m laughing at how freaking clean that was.  Great shaping of the phrase.  Powerful last impact.  Check that Gb tuning horn soloist.  Fantastic musicality on the Ticheli; he and Santa Clara Vanguard are very proud right now.  Little tuning error on the mellophone D; a few people were about 2 or 3 cents sharp.  Again the comment is yelled out “beautiful”!  And we’re vibing with the tenor sax again.  Holy crap sax soloists.  I’m dead.  Alto sax altissimo G goes crazy!  Great closing hit and a great performance tonight!

Hebron - my second viewing of the Holy Hebron Marching Band.  I can still smell the excellence.  So I took no notes during the performance.  I was too busy having multiple heart attacks.   Going back through is going to be fun.  From the first note of the first part, absolute clarity and musicality exists.  However I found myself shocked to find a few errors.  There was a single marcher on side 2 2 steps off the 50 that wasn’t in line.  A trumpet held over a release in part 1.  There’s some feet issues.  That’s it.  That’s all I can find.  Everything else is entirely opinion-based.  I wish the trombone gliss feature in Harmonium was more gooey in its entrances.  It’s closer to it than the last time I saw it.  I couldn’t quite hear the last part of the trumpet double tonguing over the trombones.  I could use more of the small brass ensemble in the ballad.  The huge woodwind feature at the front in Rocky Point needs to penetrate the rest of the ensemble.  And now fire some positivity: Steven Solis-Welch is the best conductor I’ve seen on a high school podium.  It would be a crime for him to not go into music education.  What a spectacular performance.  I can’t say enough.

Loved the callback to Vandegrift’s 2019 show. Little things I enjoyed were how nicely the drumline matched the rhythm of the low brass in the opener and how delicately the low brass could play that little figure in the softer dynamics.

I could tell it was challenging for them to come in together after long silences, like right at the opening hit. It’s challenging to pull stuff off like that but overall it was a really great performance.

not sure what I could say specifically about the trumpets, I really only paid attention to the ensemble as a whole and remembered my favorite movements lol

Finals performance

we are an up and coming program. A 6A band in a super competitive area, our kids had a great time yesterday seeing what was possible and we have some real talent here. 💙 I’m so proud of the work they put in, I’d love to hear any feedback

Got some amazing tapes, two solid runs, saw some amazing bands, and heading back to the panhandle!  Was a great (and exhausting) weekend.  Don't recommend a get off the field and back in warmup again within 45 minutes for finals lol but that's how the cookie crumbles sometimes!

Hopefully back at 4A state in about two weeks!

Son Lux went hard!  Clearly yall have fun playing it.

Thank you so much! Also does anyone know if this is the UIL judging system? I don’t think so since there are 4 music, 2 visual, and 1 cont and design.

it is the uil judging system for 5A and 6A at state. for area contests they still do the 3 music and 2 vis judges.

These are very weird.

The inconsistencies for some bands from prelims to finals really needs to be taken into question here.

Rockwall got 11th in brass in prelims and 3rd in finals...?
Lake Travis goes from 3rd in individual visual to 8th? 7th in ensemble to 4th..? Their music scores were also wildly variable too, probably because they went first in finals.
Southlake carrol getting 1st in visual ensemble and 8th in individual?

These are just 3 of the standouts to me. It's just all quite odd and weird. I really don't know what to think of these recaps.
