Cool, thanks for untangling that one!

The other good thing about having 25 1s, is that it means 10 for finals in addition to the 5 that will go on to State.  If you're in the 20-24 range then you only get 8 for finals and 4 proceed to State.

Really excited about the competition tomorrow, and good luck to all the bands and all the kids marching!

Not quite. if you have 10-19, there will only be 7 groups in finals. If there are 20-29, 10 groups in finals. Over 30 in prelims, there will be 12 in finals. Less than 9, you only have prelims to select those that advance to State.

wagner hs has been showing a lot of promise in recent years, i think they’re one of the groups to watch out for in the future.

I'm pretty sure they will be a finalist again this year. They were 6th last year in prelims and finals. Could possibly move up to 5th?

It USED to work that way but the rule was updated to that all 1’s at region counted towards state qualifier slots. Non-varsity bands confuse this somewhat but otherwise, 5A area H is taking 5 bands to state this year. Strong chance that 3 of them will be in state finals.

Let alone a strong chance of having three medalists at state

My friend’s son marches with Rouse. He said Rouse and CP tied. Can anyone shed light on how tiebreakers work? She said he told her they look at previous scores to determine the winner. Does that mean prelims? Or older scores?

No, they do not look at previous scores.  The winner is determined by what is called "judges preference", meaning that of the five judges, the band with a higher ranking by the most judges wins.

Here are the ordinals from last night:

If you add the five numbers across for each band, that is their ordinal total.

Cedar Park - 1+1+1+3+3=9

Rouse - 2+2+3+1+1=9

Leander 3+3+2+2+2=12

So, CP and Rouse are tied, but three of the judges had CP higher than Rouse and two of the judges had Rouse higher than CP, so CP wins.
