Uil 6A Area D Contest

As predicted, for the third year in a row, Timber Creek advanced to state last night and McNeil did not.  I also predict that for the third year in a row, Timber Creek will not beat an Area D participant at state prelims.  And frankly, I'd be surprised if any Area B participant outside of Coppell beats an Area D participant.

I'll also add that given how tight the scores were for 6th-9th place that all four of those bands would do extremely well at state prelims and beat every non-Coppell Area B participant.

6-9th place finals scores are crazy. Westwood’s saving grace was receiving a 3 from one of the judges to offset their 9s from most everyone else. McNeil beat MGJ by 1 point. And Bowie…I honestly don’t know what happened there. They & CTJ basically switched spots from prelims to finals. It really was anyone’s game.

Who chooses these judges? Cause like how can they disagree that much?? CTJ and round rock in prelims, one judge gave 10th and another gave 1st... do they even know what they're judging? There are so many more rankings like that, it makes me question the validaty of these scores.

Or is there something else I'm missing or don't know about uil? Maybe a random number generator?

i explained my theory earlier in this thread, when all the bands are so close to one another in terms of skill there will be more weirdness and disagreement between the judges and thus more unexpected placements. this isnt exactly confirmed but logically it should check out especially if you look at the ordinals for this area

I suppose that makes sense, I guess I was just expecting the differences to be like 5 places from each other, not 1st vs barely making finals. Also things like Bowie at 9th when they were in contention for those 2 State spots?

Keep in mind these are ordinal placings. We don't have access to the raw scores (1000 points each). It could be that maybe 5 or 6 bands were within 50 points of each other per judge and that could potentially be the difference in making state or not.

Welcome to the world of UIL judging where wild unexplainable judging like this happens every year.   I'm really interested to see how these all the Area D finals bands do at BOA next weekend to see if their placements hold when a more consisting judging standard is applied.

IMHO...6th-9th is essentially a tie. So I don't think Bowie's 9th place finish means they were really 4 spots worse than Dripping Springs.

also, from looking at the rankings, the judges were clearly judging within each respective half.  Only in a few instances did they rank bands outside their respective half.

a lot of predictions for bowie were based off of boa scores which does not translate very well to uil success. for example ctj at boa san marcos had a shockingly low placement but they brought it back here in uil

Aside from scoring, Bowie didn't really have as strong of a run like Waco. I can't say much for prelims since I missed it but it does seem like it did better based on scores. 9th definitely was a surprise but, I do feel the 3 above them did have stronger runs. Those two weeks or more in prep of Area is a lot of time for bands to improve.

Between an early performance, the rain, and then having their finals run as well I imagine it was a long day for the performers.

I dont mean any harm to any bands so please don't take offense to anything which I am about to say, I am just speaking my opinion as somebody who has marched a world class drum corps and has been a part of a competitive tx hs band. I noticed a lot of dirt in CTJ, more then Mcneil, Westwood, and Bowie. Getting 4th was not an accurate representation of where are or should be. UIL has no general effect and therefore should be paying attention to clean and if anybody says their show is harder, trust me its not. Dont mean to hate on them, congrats on making state I just think that these judges might not have had the best judgement. I mean they have been seeing lower scores from DCI judges and I saw their show from beginning to now and yes they have gotten cleaner, clean enough to make state, I wouldn't bet on it. Sorry to be a downer just stating my opinion, please don't lash out or ban me or smth like that if this is to negative I will refrain in the future like I said, just stating my opinion( did mention its just a opinion)

On a new note congrats to cedar ridge for bouncing back strong to get 2nd in what is in my opinion the hardest Area in the whole state of texas. congrats to Westwood and Mcneil for tying for 6th. Westwood jumped from 10th to tied for 6th so that is really impressive. I thought they had a way better energy in finals then prelims, I could see all of them so pumped and excited, good to see a band get better from prelims to finals. Mcneil, very cool show, love the drum feature I thought they had the number 1 percussion on Saturday, way to bring it this year with all the competitions, there is a very bright future ahead. Bowie, very cool wolf show, I enjoyed it very much, I know you guys will see success very soon, possibly even at San Antonio, keep trying and the results will come. Loved watching this contest, it lived up to all the hype, congrats to every band who preformed, all of you guys deserve to be there, for those of you going, go get them at san antonio.

Also last thing, just because i said a lot of things about CTJ that were not positive that does not mean they are not good. Their opening hit was really cool, I loved the Sax solo, and also the traditional grip tenors, really thinking outside the box. They have a really young band director in Robert lozano and it is cool to see him go out there an continue making state just like Jared Lipman. Those are not easy shoes to fill which is why I am being a little harsh on them. Congrats on making state CTJ, go get them at San Antonio and State, hoping to see you at both finals along with some area D bands who didn't make state in finals at San Anonio

Yes, I am definitely excited to see how it will play out with some of the more quality judges, which I would hope they bring out at, in my opinion, the hardest HS band competition in the whole USA(yes, even harder than Grand Nats).

I agree, as a whole, the bands in 6A state prelims is probably better than BOASA. However, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that making finals at BOASA is harder than UIL 6A SMBC finals. There will probably be a couple of would be finalists from state who don't make finals at BOASA. Nonetheless, it'll be some great competition
