6A judging panel: Tim Gray, Marty Griffin, Jeff Harper, Doug Henderson, Nola Jones, Steven Page, John Phillips, Warren Rickart, and Jay Webb

music ones - marty (perc/ens), jeff (ens), nola (ens/ww?), steven (brass), john (ens), and jay (perc/ens)

visual ones - doug, warren, and... Tim? newer one for me. i'm aware of Michael Gray, not Tim Gray. apparently he judges effect for wgi winds. maybe design/content then?

actually, Nola could be either vis or music, tho she seems to always judge music these days. not sure the last time i saw her on a vis caption. 2011??

I wouldnt mind some artificial slots (wont happen, of course) in the hyper competitive areas since last year we had 43. Area J, B, and D in particular are leaving out really strong groups with very little wiggle for bands that would realistically place in the 18-25 range, area D is notoriously the most competitive area, usually leaving Cedar (FREAKIN) Ridge, Moe and Gene Johnson, and Bowie, who are all state finalist contending groups MAYBE besides Bowie, but they are still in the 10s nowadays imo.

If I were to add 4 (38-42) slots that keep it competitive I would do this:

area A: 2

area B: 4-5

area C 4

area D 4-6

area E 5

area F 4

area G 2

area H 4

area I 4

area J 4-5

Wow... that prelims retreat is going to be beyond stressful!

It was fun seeing new faces in state finals last year, I’m just struggling to imagine which incumbent finalist is going to get pushed out. cedar ridge might displace someone but they’re not exactly a “fresh face”

The EXPECTED amount of bands to advance to the state contest AS OF 10/31:

Area A: 2

Area B: 4

Area C: 4

Area D: 5

Area E: 5

Area F: 5

Area G: 2

Area H: 4

Area I: 4

Area J: 4

Expected total: 39

Finals number: 12

My information is confirmed and accurate unlike some people's. We have to remember that more groups could advance to the state contest based off of the "bad judge rule" that can be found on the UIL website. If just 1 more band advances to the state contest, we would see 14 groups in finals.

what’s the bad judge rule?

It's this sort of entitled, elitist attitude that offends the other parts of the state that are trying to achieve and maintain a high standard despite the challenges they face in their communities, that may not be present in others. (Lack of funding, no private lessons, no additional techs, smaller enrollments, etc. etc.)  Why do you think those areas you mentioned deserve more representation simply based upon a pre-conceived perception of greatness?

Flame away.

So to clarify, with Area A getting a third band to qualify to state, do we now have enough bands at state for 14 finalists?  I saw some comments about area I only getting four qualifiers, but it looks like that's all that was expected. (And yes, I know we still need Area C results, but they should have at least 4 qualify)

I would think so but it definitely messes up the pre draw order for state so I'm not sure what they handle that.
