Woods is slightly more BOA-oriented for sure, but it’s not like they can’t perform with UIL. People on this board are saying that the TMC and State score sheets are the same, and Woods did very well at TMC. Also, they took first place at Area, which is also UIL.

slight correction but Bridgeland won area I this year due to some UIL rule on getting two 1s in music and one 1 in visual. Apparently that automatically makes you the winner by default. But if it wasn't for that rule, woods would have remained area champion. This info came out a day or two after the original area results.

So happy for 7Lakes. They have been constantly really strong since Mays took over in 2016. They have made finals in every BOA event they take part in except SASR. It’s really difficult to break through that top 15 wall because the level of excellence in Texas is amazing. I believe their best BOA finish was 2nd losing out to CTJ in 2018 & best UIL state was 9th in the Covid year. I don’t expect they’ll break into the top 10 this year but I think the future is bright.

Did not know that. They definitely deserved it, having to stop and restart 4+ hours later and then perform like they did. Truly impressive and a fun show!

This is correct, but I didn’t say Woods was the champion. Woods score put them in 1st place, and that remains true.

Yes, it was an egregious oversight by the UIL to name a champion and then remove the title days later. It’s a dumb rule, too. Makes sense for determining if a band can advance to state, but not for placements. Woods has had a confusing and frustrating week for sure! I hope they take it as fuel to make them even stronger. There is so much talent in that program. The future is bright!

I would be inclined to agree with you, but zero area C bands made finals, and in my opinion, areas shouldnt be restricting any new faces to state just so 4 bands who are grand nats finals or UIL finals bands have an easy time going to state, in my opinion

And plus, Wylie and Braswell wouldve most likely placed above most if not all of the C bands given the UIL sheets, area J is horrendously too dense right now and leaves zero give on that front

I can agree with this. I was so surprised at Wylie not making it given their track record at Area C over the years.

Area I contest & judging seems to always have some controversy.  This year a state spot was lost going from 5 to 4 because a program was disqualified. What’s great though is you now have so many strong programs in the area it’s going to be a dog fight from now on. The 4 that made it have fanatic shows & are strong programs. I agree the placements at state for C W& CF is a head scratcher.

You’re in the TOP 40 bands of 250ish across the state. That’s basically the top 16% of 6A bands in the state. While easier  said than understood in the moment, these placements do not subtract from what an accomplishment your program has achieved. Congrats on a great season!

Nah there are better bands who didnt make state, its unfair to call mcneil, westwood, churchill, and Bowie worse then these bands. And thats just naming a few

Does anyone know why Vandegrift was absent for the awards last night?

Unsure, maybe the same reason as Cedar Park not attending 5A prelims retreat? Unsure of either reason, unless they are commuting the full distance and just trying to give the members some rest. Thats my only guess since they live in the same general area.

For anyone who has the sheets, I think UIL has to discuss alignment changes to area J, cause in regards to average placements they are a horrendous outlier compared to every other area including area H and B who even a few years ago H was definitely better overall but didnt have this level of top heaviness with their groups

Im getting to the point to where I wouldnt mind moving LISD to area C and make that one 5 slots to state and have J be 3 slots to state, and if you can see the sheets you would really understand why

I really think that Marching Band has so little do to with any UIL realignment.  We all know its more sports driven than arts driven....

For CP it was just the long commute affecting the need for rest, and the need for kids to have some time for doing schoolwork.  I can't speak for Vandegrift but it wouldn't surprise me if it were something similar.

The marching band alignment to Areas has nothing to do with UIL realignment, other than the classification of the schools to 4A/5A/6A.

Area alignments are handled by TMEA.
