Skippy Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 So I've been heavily listening to a huge vareity of ska for the past few days, and I came across this band Liquid Cheese. Unlike most ska bands, which are too heavily influenced by rock and punk, these guys have a distinct latin and jazz feel to them. The sax player has a degree in music performance, the trumpet player is a band director in Arizona, and the Trombone player had a degree in Criminal Justice! They are seriously the greatest ska band I have ever heard... forget Reel Big Fish and the others. Check these guys out, you won't regret it. Is anyone else here a fan of ska? What are yall's favorite bands? Quote
LordGiggles Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 I'm new to Ska but one of my friends is obsessed with it. He's mentioned liquid cheese before, and I've visited their site, and i like them alot. Especially Wander in their latest album. Quote

Like, if you listen to the lyrics, they are always either upbeat/happy or completly messed up and about the most random topics. It all kind of fits the style of music. It's like... why do death metal bands always have these intense, threatening names? It's all to convey the (for lack of a better word) "silly/happy" mood. I think my favorite part about ska is all the skanking that breaks out in the crowd... it's so fun to do. Quote

LordGiggles Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 Yeah, I also like Tu, as well as No Originality and La Soltera. And the horn players pretty much own. Quote
Skippy Posted July 1, 2005 Author Posted July 1, 2005 Tu's awesome... because it's in spanish. Hey.. why are you still awake? Quote
LordGiggles Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 Why are YOU still awake? Really I just had some tough times at the beginning of summer, and couldn't really sleep. I've never bothered to fix my sleeping pattern, though waking up at one or two in the afternoon is kind of annoying. Quote
LordGiggles Posted July 2, 2005 Posted July 2, 2005 streetlightmanfisto rxbandits cypher i voted for kudos I like Street Manifesto alot, and Rx Bandits are pretty good along with Cypher. I voted for kudos is alright in my opinion. Check them out. They aren't as original as liquid cheese though. There more of the generic Ska bands but still i think they are pretty good. Liquid Cheese's horn section owns all though. Quote
Skippy Posted July 2, 2005 Author Posted July 2, 2005 Yeah, all those guys are good. I've never heard cypher though. Quote
LordGiggles Posted July 2, 2005 Posted July 2, 2005 Listen to "Never Pet a Burning Dog" for Cypher. That's my favorite. Everything else is pretty good too. On Streelight Manifesto, I know there's only one demo you can listen to, but It has a darn good introduction in my opinion. One of the best Ska bands i think. Quote
Cornjob Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 I think Less then Jake is good. I don't know much about ska music but i had a friend who day and night breaths ska music, burn me a CD. The forth one is "Super Orgy Porno Party", it's my fav. haha Quote
Skippy Posted July 3, 2005 Author Posted July 3, 2005 I wouldn't call the new Less Than Jake stuff ska. It's more like... punk with horns. Their old stuff is awesome ska however. Quote
Skippy Posted July 3, 2005 Author Posted July 3, 2005 Wow, thanks Giggles for pointing out Cypher. They are truly excellent. Quote
GHtubaNja Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 goldfinger is another good ska band. ah..that song superman...a classic. Quote
Skippy Posted July 3, 2005 Author Posted July 3, 2005 Oh, most definetly. Reminds me of the good old days of playing tony hawk on my N64. Quote

Brian Ngo Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 Reel Big Fish would definitely have to be one of my favorites. And the sax players at my school figured out the intro and most of the horn parts in "Everything Went Numb" by Streetlight Manifesto Quote

And then my friend made me a mixed CD of Ska music and it's pretty good. But I'm with you, I like watching people skanking. Quote
