Pearland- 78.75 (1st)

There is usually a difference between TCGC and WGI scoring and of course you cannot compare contest to contest, I just thought the massive change in both scores and placement was interesting. There also was a judge missing at NB but that doesn’t usually have a huge effect on score. It’s gonna be an interesting season, especially going into WGI Austin next week, exciting!

Can’t wait to see how things turn out in all classes for our Team Texas guards!

well i'm real happy i actually attended the Pearland contest, bc i would have been suuuuper curious about wtf happened.

the correct answer is that the judges had a really, REALLY off night tonite, esp the upstairs ones i sat right next to. none of em are active wgi judges, which prob does have something to do w/ it, bc the scores are soooo disconnected from what happened just a week ago in WGI. does kinda call into question tcgc's credibility here, when they use the same sheets. it is what it is i guess. u take who you can get, esp when there are 6 WGI regionals going on the same weekend!!

TL;DR - Classic TCGC Twilight Zone judging

yeah, smh at all of this. Pearland is the real deal imo, and should have easily won tonite. how do you go from a 79.5 in GE in wgi to a 56.5 a week later?!!! 78 in DA to a 57.5?!!

woodlands A also should have won tonite, but that gap is lil less egregious, and Tomball has fab individual performers.

woodlands world also weird downstairs/upstairs split. 87 in equipment, 85 in movement, then upstairs very low 70s bringing the score way down. again, my opinion = underscored. upstairs should have all been 83+. heck, they got a lower DA score tonite than longtime WGI judge Eric Kitchenmen gave em three weeks ago!!

for the record, i thought both Pearland and Woodlands World were better than any of the scholastic opens and worlds i watched via the Indianapolis stream. make of that what u will...👀

Also, look at the equipment and movement judges flipping out over TWHS World in that video. Wow! 😆Can't say I blame them. Judges are just about the biggest fans of the activity, after all. 😃

I've only watched a couple of the Opens, but I'm already confused by the scoring, I will admit. Pearland has a wonderful show!

I haven't finished watching The Woodlands yet, but I have NEVER seen judges flip out and stand up during a performance! I just love their show this year!

crazy high score from dripping springs hs at tcgc area west with a 89.53. looking like a strong score going into state and dayton

the IA judging at the Houston area one is WILD. that 65ish in movement TWHS A got may have nearly prevented them from advancing to state, despite them being 1st place upstairs. u are now entering the twilight zone!! welcome to local circuit guard scoring!!

What's the process for advancing units to state across the two contests? I can't seem to find it on the website. Is there a set number of guards that advance from each contest, or do they combine all the scores together? The latter seems kind of insane to me, given the inconsistencies we've seen from TCGC judging.

they take the top 50% scoring guards in each area and then add the next one out and then those groups so to state. ex-20 SNA groups in the west area, they take 11 to state from that area.

state schedules are out and here are my thoughts going into it

SAA Red Round- Reagan B guard is currently the favorite to win this round but i could see deer park or even pearland A taking it over them.

SAA Blue Round- I think this is edinburg’s time to shine with a win at state but i will keep my eye on pflugerville hs becuase they are quite good this year

SA Red Round-it’s gonna be between john paul steven’s and james e taylor hs, it’s gonna be close between them. both are deserving of this chance to win

SA Blue Round- it’s going to be smithson valley hs who’s gonna win here fs but excited to see who the other medalists will be.

SNA Red Round-this round is gonna be so exciting to see who comes out on top with tomball, jordan, and tomball memorial all such good shows. my pick rn is currently tomball but i could also see jordan taking it

SNA Blue Round- dripping springs is taking this one just from their score at area alone being so high imo 2nd and 3rd will be tight tho between twhs A, brandeis and veterans memorial.

SJVA- hays jv, tomball jv or dripping springs jv is gonna win this one. i would have to say my pick is hays jv

IA-rgv or seven lakes is gonna win this

SO- my pick would be pearland but for some reason they aren’t coming to state so my next pick is westlake but i wouldn’t mind their being a bowie upset and they take it over westlake 

IO-undaunted obv

SW- TWHS hopefully this sets them up for a win at worlds in dayton

IW- invictus. be really cool to see them back in world class finals

Dripping Springs won SNA last night with a 91.82! Hopefully this is a good sign for them at dayton.

So incredibly proud of Liberty Hill Guard this season. First year participating in WGI and made finals in San Antonio. Made TCGC State Championships for the first time in school history and came in 4th in their round. They can’t be sad about coming in under Jordan, Tomball and Tomball Memorial. It was a fun night for sure.

it might!! this was a fairly strong panel, 50% active wgi judges + 50% "retired" ones. dripping springs is peaking at exactly the right time, sort of like grand oaks did last yr. the 90+ crowd in the A class is quite small this year. very exclusive club.

meanwhile woodlands A totally flatlined here. that's a surprising result for me, makes me wish i attended to see for myself!! others must have improved a lot!! i thought this was the best woodlands A show of the past 4 years, but they scored way worse than usual. at least they won WGI Austin i guess. they seem to always do better in wgi anyway. maybe take em to Dallas next yr instead?

Westlake scoring like they could challenge for an open medal, we'll see if that holds. overtaking Pearland in the overstuffed 3rd round of Dayton prelims will be their first task. where was Pearland, speaking of? 'nother Friendswood situation?? or just a scheduling conflict?? also, cy-fair over bowie here, but it was close. cyfair wins in the three analysis captions, but Bowie takes effect. i hope they both make it into Dayton finals but could be tricky if Oviedo and dobyns have improved a lot.

woodlands world up another couple points this week. 94.4. last week at wgi their downstairs scores looked like an impenetrable firewall. this week the upstairs ones look like it, too. DA scores better than expected, including 95s across the board from Pizani. i was projecting a 96-something win for em at Dayton, but that was w/ 98+ downstairs combined w/ 95ish upstairs. if these upstairs scores improve, they may do even better than i think, buuut i have trust issues w/ local circuit scores. might flatline a bit in Dayton.

overall, tx high school units heading to Worlds looking very very very strong this yr. independents a lil on the weaker side unfortunately.

I don't think there was ever actually a "situation" with Friendswood in TCGC, was there? The decision not to compete in the circuit seems purely a director choice. Klein Oak didn't compete in TCGC, either, when Friendswood's current director won WGI A Class at Dayton with them. Yet Friendswood WAS competing in TCGC until she took the reins. There could be any number of reasons why. Costs, philosophy differences, bad blood, or maybe one of her units got "Twilight Zoned" one too many times, as you say. 😅
