aggietrumpet327 Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 haha yeah i guess my source was reliable. the scores are online http://www.uil.utexas.edu/music/smbc_results2006.html edit:aaand it looks like aly_lynn beat me to it and from first glance, these scores just continue to uphold the UIL standard of consistent judging... Quote
GuitarJoe Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 Hurrah for the wonder UIL judging system. Quote
Tnilli Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 and lets add another example on how terrible uil is... Quote
baritone Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 When does the complaining of UIL ever stop? Quote
Tnilli Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 when they finally have a judging panel with some sort of consistent judging... And note...im not saying this because spring did not make finals...in fact my sister even told me their performance this morning was not one of their better ones... UIL has the most inconsistent judging known to man...and thats a fact. Quote
itsstephenyo Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 It's not the judging panel. It's the scoring system. I hate the ranking thing. Using their scores is a more effective way of scoring the bands. Geez there are some crazy rankings going on here... Akins with a 2 and 21 in music. Reagan 23 and 4 in music. Rowlett with 28 and 5. Spring with 20 and 8 in visual. It just doesn't work. Quote
Tnilli Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 Sorry by judging panel i meant the scoring system...my bad. Quote
G'townPIT Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 Another thing to consider is the high number of outstanding bands this year. I imagine it's quite difficult to distinguish placements correctly for 31 amazing bands. In my opinion, the best system of judging at this level would be the tick system. However, the judges are all men, most likely age 60+, with huge guts. So they could be somewhat senile... Quote

GuitarJoe Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 I agree with the above post. With the talent level of the bands that advanced to the SMC, it was inevitable that many that should have made finals, would not. However seeing some bands place so low just because of wierd judging...just doesn't seem right. Quote
Mculbert07 Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 I'm sorry, I must have missed something. Where is SFA in all of this? Quote
baritone Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 One judge put them in 9th,another in 29th. That just makes me laugh...Terrible. SFA does not do good in UIL. They are more of a BOA band as many of you know. Quote

Mculbert07 Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 Somebody fix UIL. But still, I hope Bell can take this AND GN, that would be awesome. They would become the best marching band in history, i think. Quote
baritone Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 That would be amazing, and I think it's very possible. I love Bell and they'll be the first band to ever do that. Their show this year is amazing. Quote

UIL has the most inconsistent judging known to man...and thats a fact. Absolutely correct. The UIL judging system stinks. This is not just people being sour (although there are those who just whine because they don't get what they want). Something needs to be done. The problem I see is that there is NO accountability for these guys. While every judge may be a great person, with a great program or reputation behind them, that still doesn't account for the completely off the wall rankings and scores they give. I just can't understand that since this has been happening for forever it seems, that nobody in the UIL office hasn't looked at these rankings and said "dang, that's so inconsistent... Oh Wow! It's just not happening at the state level, it's also happening at our area contests! Maybe we should come up with an effective system!" It just blows my mind... EDIT: I also think that hearing mulitple directors from different schools with great programs say "I've just stopped trying to figure out judging at the Area and State level..." That's just not acceptable... Quote
Lustra.exe Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 Analogy: NFL [Playoffs] : BOA NCAA [bCS] : _____ ... yep, i said it. Quote
Fortisimo Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 Hmm, could someone give some reviews perhaps? I was nearly 100% sure Marcus would win music; the last time I saw them, it was incredibly clean and almost inhumanly style-filled. That is to say, when I heard htem performing, say, Thunderstorm or Overture to William Tell, I could hardly tell them apart from the level of full orchestras. I mean, it was truly amazing how much their music kicked ****. Perhaps I'm missing something? Quote
PlayOboe Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 What does SFA have to start doing to make finals at SMC? We all consider them to be one of the best bands in the nation, but they never do well at this contest! This never fails to blow my mind. Quote

I just don't see how you don't reward difficulty. Someone with 120 pages of drill doing it well against someone with 50 pages who marches incredibly clean drill. Of course the 50 page band is going to look cleaner. It's sheer numbers. 120 > 50 = less clean drill. I don't understand. Quote
