Nancy08 Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 I was wondering how many of you make your own reeds. I want to learn but 1) I'm too lazy, and 2) I have no time. Is it hard? cause im tired of ordering them off the internet for like $16+ ... Quote
MartinHorn Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 I've heard it's very hard, especially for double reeds. Mouthpieces are superior. Quote
Nancy08 Posted November 22, 2006 Author Posted November 22, 2006 yeah...that's the only good thing about brass ...jk. I wish i could just buy one reed and it work forever...that would be awesome! Quote
Arabella Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 True, but then you would be in quite a situation when you got better and were playing on a reed that would be now too easy for you Quote
barisaxy08 Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 i think they made glass reeds for that soul purpose...so that u could only use one...but from what i heard...it was crap...but i have no experience... i like my wood. Quote
crazyjakeup Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 i carve mine from the tree my great grandpa planted... Quote
Nancy08 Posted May 11, 2007 Author Posted May 11, 2007 I would learn to do it this summer, if I had more than 3 weeks of summer off. But alas, I do not. Quote
barisaxy08 Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 we got a good month and a half off before we really get into anything after our june camp first of course...this will b a great summer! Quote
shmily1130 Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Yeah, I make my own. My teacher taught me how to make them in about an hourish? Maybe two? It's not that hard, but to get it right it takes practice... But it's SO much cheaper than buying fully-made reeds! Quote
Nancy08 Posted June 19, 2007 Author Posted June 19, 2007 Yeah no kidding, but I have no one to teach me. But it's ok cause I'll figure it out. Quote
sax5warrior Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Ill tell you a little secret of mind... hehehe..hehe..hehe..ok. Now when your reed (except double reeds, i apologize) is 2 weeks old and you notice it starting to go bad. take the shavings off by your lower teeth. and then try to smooth it out by your thumb and look up to the light to see the heart and all that stupid stuff. Hey, it adds 1 more measly week of life (if that is if you do it right) and plus, adds 10 more weeks of patience in getting new reeds from the internet. There's my secret. A poor little mexican whose trying to salvage money to go spend it on his girlfriend. Quote

takigan Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 I don't know any woodwind players who make their own reeds, not a lot of people do it. I'm no WW player but there's just something really cool in being able to say you "make your own reeds". It's like an art in itself, and aesthetically would seem to reflect the commitment and skill of the player....like a rite of passage into good musicianship or something. Kinda like forging your own lightsaber.....I dunno, the concept just sounds really cool to me . Quote
Nancy08 Posted June 21, 2007 Author Posted June 21, 2007 Yeah my favorite thing will probably be wrapping them. You can use rubber or thread and probably other stuff too, and there's so many colors and patterns to chose from. I will be entertained... So easily amused... Quote
