Nancy08 Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 So do you think anybody can learn any instrument, or are some people just born to play a certain one? For me I've determined that it's a very good thing I didn't start on percussion. I CANNOT learn even how to hold the sticks right. I can kinda do brass, but it seems like woodwinds are my thing. Then again, I can't make any noise come out on flute, and even with three clarinets trying to help me I can't get anything but overtones out on the clar. Low reeds for me! Quote
barisaxy08 Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 i honestly believe that some instruments only fit certain personalities...you can't be a naturally weak person and be good at instruments like the tuba/bari sax...and u notice that it seems as if more girls tend to go for woodwind instruments and more guys for brass instruments...and certain personalities are attracted to each instruments... i dunno...it's jus something i picked up on. Just look around and u can kinda tell. Quote
Skippy Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 If you don't have big hands, it'll be tough to make it as a bass player. Quote
bossman Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 usually in low brass the stereotype is big lips, but i've seen some guys with no lips @ all. lol Quote
MartinHorn Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 I doubt were made for an instrument, it's just the one you enjoy playing the most. Quote
TX Suh-nare Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 I think you can be made for an instrument. It's weird, but I think someone's personality can really dictate the most likely candidate for an instrument. Example: Trumpets-generally very cocky people, love to show off Horns/Mellos-just like the nickname implies, usually very mellow Saxophones-Kinda calm, quiet, but can suprise you Drummers/Percussionists-Crazy, cocky, and overall goofballs Flutes-can be bipolar. The nicest people around certain people, but also known to gossip and even insult others. These are generalities, so not ALL people will be like this. Usually, though, these are your groups of people Quote
gavinrh Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 i think the directors at middle schools look at the lips or whatever of the kid trying out instruments and "suggest" they play a certain one. bigger lips on tuba/euph and thinner lips on trumpet and medium on french horn. i know i was almost forced on french horn... jwt3k Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 certain personalities do fit certain instruments... just look at your trombone section... Quote
Arabella Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 I guess. I'm kind of a general woodwind person- Oboe, tenor sax, and flute. Can't play clarinet, but my sister is first chair. I can make sounds with bassoon but don't actually know how to play it. Quote
Shiloh Phoenix Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 so what's the stereotypical tuba player? Quote

Our mellos and french horns ARE smart, and the trumpets attitude is RIGHT ON the money (but we love them anyway). Our saxes and our percussion are really relaxed and we clarinets...well, we don't CAUSE drama, but there is a lot of drama within the section. Luckily, it's all solved and now that we're separated into different bands, we're okay. Quote
hebrontuba08 Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 yeah, some of our tubas are pretty dumb...but they are really hilarious so it works out. we have both extremes, the smart guy whos not as crazy and then we have the insane idiot. it balances out... Quote

manuel_pablo Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 Except for one person, all of our euphoniums started on either Trumpet or Trombone...or in one person's case...flute. Quote
