Mark Time Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Can anyone out there list the marching bands in Texas that use over-the-shoulder (contra bass style) marching tubas instead of Sousaphones? Quote
whitewing09 Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 now that i think about it ive never seen a HS texas marching band use contras Quote
mbui Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Yeah, I can't name any off the of my head either. For some reason contras are fairly common in the Midwest. Quote
gavinrh Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 oooh i saw a band at san antonio (i think it was for state) and they had contra baritones...haha they had them on their shoulders like contra tubas...it was pretty sweet! we thought we were getting 4 valve sousaphones, but i guess not? since the company closed Quote
MartinHorn Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Weatherford I heard does, though I may be wrong. Quote
Trumpet Master Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Edinburg High School in the valley has contra tubas. Quote
barisaxy08 Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 I know Carmel used marching tubas when they won GNs but that's the only time I've seen a high school band use those kinda tubas...they must be a killa... like carrying a fat kid to a lunch line... Quote
whitewing09 Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 lol i think it would suck to have to use one of those after a few hours of marching with a sousa i get tired and it seems that it be harder to do it with a contra Quote
NSUMusician Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 I've seen a few schools out in West Texas use them, just can't think of the names. Carmel and Avon use them. I can't really think of any other ones. Trust me, I've carried one; A Contra is one bad Sucka! A ten-minute wall-stand holding a 45 pound instrument with 3/4 or the weight above the center pivot is NOT FUN! Quote

Even the abbreviation of it sounds awesome. Quote
smoke_dawg_08 Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 i've carmel, avon, centerville, and center grove can't really think of any other's and i have never seen a band in texas use contvertibles, that would be amazing if i got to march one on high school...darn you midwest bands Quote
Nancy08 Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 I've only seen two bands ever use them, but I cannot think of their names...maybe it'll come to me. Quote
Shiloh Phoenix Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 that band we saw at san antonio was harlingen gavin. and we are getting those new tubas, go check your myspace bulletins. Quote
Trumpet Master Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 QUOTE (Shiloh Phoenix @ Jan 7 2007, 04:54 PM) that band we saw at san antonio was harlingen gavin. and we are getting those new tubas, go check your myspace bulletins. harlingen doesn't have contras Quote
gavinrh Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 i was talking about contra baritones...they were on their shoulders Quote
Shiloh Phoenix Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 maybe harlingen south? I know I saw a band in all red with like 15 contra tubas. Quote
gavinrh Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 and i saw a band not in all red with contra baritones Quote
whitewing09 Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 lmao nice so contra has a better sound then sousa? Quote
bossman Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Without question! They sound way better, becuase there's more detail in the horn. the sousa is less personable. and it's not as bad as it seems to the common eye. i mean if you've marched a sousa you can march a contra. Depending on if ur band liked to do alot of horns up and horns down though Quote
bossman Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 i remember seeing that school from the valley, at SA. I think they had the contras that are interchangeable. You can use it as a concert tuba and a contra. Quote
