bariphonium Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 Ah, the famous drum major salute. Sometimes simple, sometimes complex. Sometimes long, sometimes short and sweet. I've seen some of the weirdest ones, one of which had the head drum major move her arms in a circle and then make the motion to "shoot" and arrow, while others where a simple salute, and that's it. What are some of the better ones that y'all have seen? Quote
Lextbone Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 yeah less is more...3-5 counts is plenty..although i did see a dm this year and her bands show was about clowns..and she totally had this cute salute to go along with the show...it was awsome Quote
wilson07 Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 the woodlands have 5 drum majors usually and they always have a very cool synchronized salute. long but still a good salute Quote
mindfulmusician Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 I once saw one DM salute that was pretty crazy - it looked like he was trying to do the robot by how jerky he was. In fact, it looked as if he was about to break dance...but it was pretty cool. Quote

LikeABandNerd Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 I think that they should make a whole new branch of judging at competitions for the drum major salute. That would be completely awesome!! Then the DMs would seriously go all out and we would see some really creative stuff. Quote
titancoaster Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 I am from connally and our show is grant us peace, and our drum majors "say it" in sign language Quote
chickora Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 The solute from our very last game was that we had 3 female DM. They did their fancy solute and all of a sudden they added a part where they blow a kiss to the croud and what that had on their hands was a hand full of glitter.. It was pretty kool. Quote
themainclarinet Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 Hmm *thinks about possible drum major salute mixed with old cheerleading stuff* Some of those podiums are big enough for a back hand-spring...what do you think Quote
mnkyman Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 ours changes year by year...its left up to the drum majors to decide what they want to do..that why in 03 u saw 2 different salutes..one at the begging by one dm and one at the end by another.. in 04..the salute was a karate move thought up by a dm who was ..yes in karate... but in the end ...all our salutes end with hands out..and down..like making a W in the air but down (in fists)....right hand up to the head in salute..break into fist in front/side of face..then down to attention position also..some competetions have captions or awards for best dm..IE: katy isd preview...lone star preview...anyone know how this is judged.?..or what its based off of? Lone Star didn't have a best DM award. Quote
DarkGuardNinja Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 i saw one that lookede like it would be at home in a Power Rangers TV show once... it was pretty wild. I heard about a "Matrix-ish" one too... but i don't remember much about them. Quote
MartinHorn Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 Quote also..some competetions have captions or awards for best dm..IE: katy isd preview...lone star preview...anyone know how this is judged.?..or what its based off of? I think these captions are for how well the drum majors direct their bands. Our drum majors do the same simple salute every year but its cool. Though I have a bit of a problem with drum majors that bring their colorguard captain on the field with them. Some of them just act ridiculous *cough* (Marcus colorguard with acting like a bird) *cough* (Fossil Ridge colorguard, you know why) *cough* so I think drum majors should leave the colorguard members in the stands. Although I like it short and sweet, a band with hats like the Cavs have, It looks pimp when the drum major runs his fingers along the rim. Just my opinion. Quote
RMyers Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 I like simple salutes...if you look left you see why. Having to know the reason for saluting is another. It started in the Roman times to show that you didn't have a weapon, you had to do it to the Senators when you approched them. And it has evolved since then. FYI. Quote
Babette Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 I've only seen our drum majors salutes (the both have the same one) I think it's lame. My boyfriend, whos a junior, was telling me about some of the ones they had in the past. One year, the DM had a tux as his uniform so he jsut like bowed. And last year I think it was ,the DM had REALLY long hair, and his salute, he like bent over really quick and stuck out his arm and flipped his hair over. Quote
MartinHorn Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 Check out the salute in this vid Phantom Regiment that's a good one. Quote
