tts: the oldest medical school in texas shutting down

(okay, not fully, but for the most part)

There was a story in the Daily Texan about UTMB. Over $700 million in damages from the hurricane. The kicker is that they still paid their employees (as they should) even though they couldn't come to work. However, because they weren't in the laboratories, the grants scientists and researchers received could NOT be applied to paying them. Basically UTMB had to lay off 3800 people because they could not afford to keep paying them without the grants. It did say that all of these people would be given priority job placements and assistance finding new places, yet.... wow.

Ha, yeah, my uncle's an MRI Tech there.

HE KEPT HIS JOB!

(But a nurse that goes to church with us was laid off)

They are also giving everyone payment through January, so they aren't left without anything for Christmas, and they still get all their benefits, which they definitely didn't have to do.

tts: not knowing that much about utmb even though i live right across the causeway from it...

Awh, I've been there too! I sprained my ankle the week before Thanksgiving my freshman year of college (last year). I had to come home with a huge walking boot & crutches...it sucked :(

TTS: being miserably sick & being forced to go to class on your 20th birthday. Darn it, I want a 4.0 this semester.

on a more positive note...

TTR: having fun on your 20th birthday even when you're hacking like a smoker. Yay for Mellow Mushroom trivia night!

TTS: First U.S. death from Swine Flu is a baby in Houston.

Kinda sucky odds considering the mortality rate of this disease has been less than 5%.

The band director hasn't been able to get a hold of the organizations to see if they could get any refunds... :( I'm guessing we'll get some refund but not all...and also it was canceled because 1 students out of 50,000+ in the district gets it and we get canceled the day before we leave >:( but these things happen I guess...

Edit: It turns out our band director didn't pay the charter buses or for the condos we would be staying in yet...we're being refunded for that (or for juniors we can put it in for next year's trip).

Edit...Part 2: The trip was rescheduled and we were able to enjoy the time we had together...;) Not much of a things that suck....
