TRtrumpet Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Lol, yeah that's probably what I'll end up doing. So how much harder is it to get a one at state? Quote

But the system is unfair in my opinion, I remember two years ago, I got the same rating as our All-State Tuba player. Made me really happy, but I knew the system was broken somewhere. I have only seen 5 saxophones make a 1 in the last two years, and 3 of those were from Coppell. Quote
Fata1 Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 I've decided to play Concerto No. 1 by Richard Strauss for state. I'd like to play both movements but there's no way I'm memorizing five or six pages of music. So I guess I'll just stick with the first movement. Quote

If they want to, but those saxophone judges are realllllllllllllllllllly picky. basically you must give the performance of your life to make them think. oh and dont let the other players in the hall intimidate you, they love to play and intimidate you with their overused vibrato. and uhh...be prepared for a 8 minute walk. TRtrumpet Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 Haha, well I can do "overused" vibrato too, lol. But yeah, I usually don't listen to them anyway. Quote
Arabella Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 I'm playing Two Insect Pieces by Britten!! Quote

MaverickBand15 Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 I remember last year my judge started like advertising mallets to me.... Quote

Yeah...I mean, I knew I wasn't going to do that well (folded on the last page of a 4-page piece), but...he could have given me a better critique than "good job, adjusting the height of the keyboard." Just remember this, it is GOING TO SUCK when you try and come back. Not only will you sound bad but it will be discouraging. So just do it TODAY. Man, longer you put it off, the longer it will take before you get good, and you'll just wasted a whole bunch of time instead of getting the results sooner. Dude, just MAKE yourself do like five minutes a day, literally. Build momentum and then it will be easier. Give yourself some time to play something you like to play. This way you won't anchor all those feelings of playing something you don't want to play to practicing. I made a thread of accountability on another forum. Every day I posted in the thread if I praticed or not, how much I practiced, and what I practiced(if you don't practice a certain day, tell us why honestly you didn't). Everybody can then judge to see if your excuse was valid or just lazy BS. You may want to consider something like this to help get the ball rolling. Btw, I'll be playing Weber bassoon concerto at state s & e. Edited May 6, 2008 by BassoonPadwan Quote
TRtrumpet Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 I played my solo at our spring concert last night. Out of the three state soloist in our band, I was the only to get a standing ovation! And had the principal and super intendant say I was AMAZING! YAY! Quote

RebelSaxophone Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Does a quartet have to be memorized in order to go to State? I've only ever done solos at UIL so i'm not familiar with the rules for ensembles. Quote
